Did my 45 km usual trip this morning with normal driving, not trying to be efficient, took a different road so about a third at 100km/h and about two thirds at 60-80km/h. Cold but strong sun so little heating needed. About 10 C for trip. 13.6kWh/100km. So looks to be about 10% less efficient than our Ioniq for similar trip. It was at about 15kWh until I met the slow roads.

I can live with that, with the extra power of the ID.3. You have to watch the speed, it creeps up very quickly. And you are going faster than you think.

You got 58 Kwh, very fast charging on DC and you're worried about efficiency ? Pedal to the Metal, and enjoy the rear wheel drive ffs lad. :D

That's what I am saying, I am impressed!. My country roads are giving me a lot of fun with good efficiency.

Jesus lads, I'm impressed. I drove a Plus. Sat into one while waiting for the test drive model to come back and had a good look around. Impressions are very good. The seats are surprisingly bolstered and held me well. Interior was a black/cream mix, not my cup of tea but still not bad looking. Plenty of leg and head room for me at 6'4, seat wasn't as far back as it would be in the Golf. Didn't get a chance to sit in the back seat though.

Interior is much nicer than expected. In the pictures I didn't like where the centre console doesn't meet the dash and ends at the cupholders, it honestly doesn't look bad at all. Tons of storage, I like the little tray to slip your phone in. Cupholders are in a good place.

Steering wheel controls will take some getting used to, seems to be a mix of pressing and slide/touch controls as I had to press ACC button? You CAN actually set adaptive cruise in 1kph increments, some reviewers suggested you couldn't (ideal for GPS speed). In saying that my Golf was a bit tricky to get used to on a test drive but it's all muscle memory now, curious to see how people get used to the buttons. Back window visibility isn't too bad despite the smaller window.

Steering felt fine, suspension was comfortable and car handled well. Doesn't feel heavy at all. Moves very quick but to echo what some others have said it does feel a bit slow off the line and then you feel it pick up once it's rolling. Could be just the lack of revving through gears and wheelspin. Even my 110hp Golf would spin easy enough with Pilot Sport 4, so planting it and not making a fuss is a pretty different experience.

EV driving is very comforting, lovely quiet drive. Unfortunately the glass fell out of the driver wing mirror 5 minutes into my test but it wasn't an issue for the drive itself :D

    Negative points?
-Lane assist kept telling me to center the car and would beep so that would be disabled.
-Regen didn't always come on when coasting and B is too harsh sometimes. It seemed more frequent when ACC was slowing down the car (car was left in sport mode though)
-The driver screen seems a bit under utilised but I didn't dive deep into customisation so probably can be changed. Lane assist/ACC icon doesn't need to be 1/3 of the screen. Would like a trip consumption on there too.
-Brakes seem to have a deadzone so if you go from 40% to 50% press nothing happens but you're quickly gaining on a stopped car, would need some getting used to. The collision alert light along the windscreen is pretty cool though!

Driving position didn't feel massively different to my Golf. The gear selector on the driver screen is pretty cool.

Just a shame I have to figure out this charging nonsense with on street parking before knowing if I can commit to one next year...

A fair report, thanks. I am only used to the screens now after about 4 days ownership. You can easily set them up as you wish, makes them much simpler. See my post a few back..

Just to add, performance and handling are very important to me, but so far I have just being trying to get a handle on normal driving, so know what to expect on longer runs.
My last car was a Honda Civic S-GT, which was great fun, had great handling and steering etc with 182 HP. It was probably a little more powerful at higher speeds than the ID.3, but otherwise the VW is every bit as good.

Bjorn getting a bug where the car (Max) keeps detecting a 90km/hr speed limit and adjusting his cruise control. That'd be infuriating. It can be disabled though, but still indicates wrong speed limits.

I assume turning off traffic sign detection and lane assistance doesn't effect the adaptive cruise control?

That has happened to me so it isn't just the Max.

Me too, in a plus. Dropping to 30 in a 50 zone and once on the motorway warned of a 50 limit but I turned it off before she dropped anchor!

surprising / disappointing to hear - ACC system in previous Golfs was almost flawless - definitely a step down when I changed over to an i3, where the system kept disengaging if the sun was in the wrong place etc!

    9.1kWp (5.6E/3.5W)

I find the ACC good in general but have had this speed issue and another where it is deactivated completely.

When it is on and driving in traffic/commuting I think it does a good job.

My Honda used to do that a lot. It used to read the reduced speed limit signs on slip roads. It is a problem with many cars I believe. Easiest thing is just turn off that part. I like it just to warn me if I am exceeding the speed limit, not to try and reduce the speed.

Eagerv does your First have parking sensors on the front? I forgot to check the one I was looking at.

Yes and they all seem to work well, I don't yet miss the camera..

Great. I actually prefer the beepers to the camera so it suits me perfectly.

Can anyone confirm this ? sounds like a pretty major flaw if you cant decouple the ACC from the feature which auto adjusts to speed signs.

I have ACC on my Passat which I have to say is excellent, it also has just plain speed sign recognition which is not so excellent, passing by slip roads confuse it and in one particular case the speed sign on a train track!! (Lower Glanmire road in Cork, heading towards town from Tivoli)

I think it would be serious safety issue if the car is going to randomly brake on a motorway for example from 120 down to 80 if is misinterprets a sign.

Just back from a test drive.

    1st Plus

Its a really really nice car, very pretty, very comfy, good driving position. found the UI intuitive to use, but overall a bit underwhelmed.
definitely found it sluggish off the line, but it was effortless from 60-100., a ridiculously small turning circle. found the lane assist ok on the country roads, it seemed to try help you rather than scold you like older systems i have used.

didnt like the reversing camera, backed back into the spot i started from, backed up to where i thought was maybe a foot gap, when i looked it was more like 3 or 4.

I think I had my expectations set too high as the only EV experience i have had to date is an iPace and RR Sport PHEV I just didnt get the same grin on my face when I drive them, (but these are like chalk and cheese and its unfair to compare them)

If I needed to change car, I would be all over this car, but I prefer my current 8yr old diesel Merc Estate where I am getting ~65mph on the motorway

looking at the different PCP options(and my maths are right), the 10% deposit works out about €500 cheaper than the 30% deposit if you get the 3 payments in the 1st movers club, which closes on Wednesday i think.

the dealer I went to had 2 in stock waiting to be sold, could be out the door in one on Monday if I wanted it, he had a white and a grey/black one, of the two I preferred the white.

you can get a towbar for it to hold a bike rack, or dog box etc, but obviously you are not to tow with it, but I think it's ~€600 plus installation if i read the brochure right.

General question, what alternative cars are prospective or indeed actual buyers of the ID3 looking to buy / or previously considered?

I like the idea of the ID3 but wonder would the Golf eHybrid be looked at as an alternative by many of you? It seems like a very good PHEV and is probably cheaper on PCP vs the 1st Edition

There is no better ev for €34k out there now. Range, size and speed nothing comes close at this price.

I thought they were closer to €40k according to VW website

Haven't tried it yet, but would be surprised if turning off various assists effected the ACC. They are in different menus. But will try it next time I am out in car, unfortunately wont be until Mon due to other commitments for weekend.

When you include the SEAI Grant and VRT rebate they are approx:

    34k
    41k
    46k

Off the top of my head.

Did you have it in Sport Mode?

I find in the other modes it's still pretty quick, but Sport mode gives a better kick at lower speeds.

I had the id.3 in sport for my test drive and it certainly isn't lacking off the line.

Spotted one in Greystones last night doing hockey pick up.

What are they like for "camping"? Do they stay "on" for as long as you want, topping up the 12V from the high voltage system?

How long does pre-heating take and is it flexible? I had to pop to the shop this morning and it's 5C, can I turn the heating on for 15 minutes while getting ready or is it really only suitable for your work schedule and not last minute heat?

Also my test drive was skewed by a previous driver, but the efficiency was 5.3kWh/100km over 37km, 1hr6m, 34kph avg. Bit of flooring it from myself but also lots of easy cruising. That doesn't seem accurate?

Champion hypermiling DaveyDave full charge at that constant rate would give you 1000km on a single fill. Not possible obviously but wow could you imagine getting that range from a 35k EV. I’m sure we’ll see it happen at some point in the future.

May not have been. The salesman was more interested in showing me he could change the colour of the screen.

Don’t get me wrong it’s a quick car. And if I could justify to myself to spend 40k on a new car I would have it on Monday. I think I just set my expectations too high. It’s not the toy I was hoping it to be if you get why I mean. It’s the best looking EV out there
