Still haven't received our OTA update.

    Anyone else still waiting?

And actually, wha't it supposed to do/fix?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 729 ✭✭✭Sam the Sham

I'm still waiting. But hearing tales of bricked cars (and giving that I'm getting rid of this car in January), I'm not inclined to accept if it ever does show up.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11 oDerak_man

Hi, I received notification in the car last week. Ran the update on Thursday. Something went wrong (error message 'Over-the-air update not complete!) and the car was dead. VW took it to the dealer where they revived the car but did not finish the update and told me to try again or fork out 600 Euro for them to do it in the shop (I have 2020 1st model = out of warranty). Hence I am considering my options whether to risk having the car bricked again or just ignore the update.

The notification details only said the update provides preparation for two-way charging and some bug fixes.

I am considering a second hand ID3 but considering the issues many have had, and the story above, perhaps I am better off avoiding it, given VW has such a low warranty and they cannot stand over small things like a software update.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 407 ✭✭Liam2021

Done mine but there was no differance, if your getting uour new xar in January you might be best leave it. I was unsure when I did my update but never had an issue doing updates on the 1st. Like you due a new car in January.

Never had any issues with my id3, one of the best cars I've had. There has been a lot if negativity around the id3 but like anything you will never hear the good stories , which lots have had. Getting a new one in January.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,263 ✭✭✭hold my beer

Yeah we've an ID3 too, lovely car. Never had any issues.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,781 ✭✭✭✭fits

zero issues with ours either. Moved it on to get something bigger for family but miss it.

105k on mine and it hasn't missed a beat, love it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,052 ✭✭✭✭markodaly

Yea, it does look like a lovely car and ticks many of the boxes I am after. It's just that reliability appears to be a bit hit and miss, and the 3-year warranty from VW is on the lowest end of the spectrum given that most others offer at least 5 if not 7. True, that if I buy from a VW dealer I will get 12 months, maybe negotiate 24 months warranty with them, but no doubt it will cost me in the sticker price.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,186 ✭✭✭✭Flinty997

That is not unique to the ID3 or VW. Go to any forum for a car or manufacturer and you'll find similar. ID3 is a new product with teething issues. Some that really should have been caught.. But you get a lot of bang for your buck especially used in the "current" market.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,052 ✭✭✭✭markodaly

Well, MG4 has a 7-year warranty and the BYD Dolphin has a 6-year warranty.

Are there other direct competitors that have a 3-year warranty for their EVs?

Even the Nissan Leaf has a 5-year warranty at this stage.

I get that people will pay a bit more for the VW badge, its one of the reasons I am looking at it. But there are caveats with it. I need to test it first to get a feel for it.

MG and BYD are new brands so I am unsure about them, but BYD in particular seem to have a sold rep. But you are right in the way that I may be overlooking the fact that these other cars may have their own teething issues and that VW owners are just more vocal about them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,471 ✭✭✭✭the_amazing_raisin

The thing with warranties is they're only as good as the service behind them

I remember Kia owners complaining they had to spend hundreds every year on servicing and consumables or else they'd void the warranty

Or for MG there's been some horror stories about long lead times for parts

Now I'm not saying VW are better, in fact I think their service in some of their garages is absolutely abysmal. Now my car is out of warranty I'll be bringing it to an independent garage from now on, much better service and the mechanics are often more knowledgeable

One thing I'll say is that VW don't seem to have any crazy service conditions in their warranty, 2 years and unlimited mileage. If you have to spend hundreds extra to keep a warranty on a car where nothing is likely to go wrong, then is it really worth it?

Anyway, my point is there's plenty of horror stories with every brand, and I wouldn't use the length of the warranty as an absolute measure of quality. It's always worth digging deeper

Right lads, I'm at my wits' end. I can't get/keep the fukking windscreen (interior) clean!

I've tried dedicated Invisible Glass windscreen cleaner, Windolene and Mr. Muscle Glass Cleaner. Nothing works! As soon as you as much as look at the bloody thing, it starts fogging up.

    Any suggestions?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,136 ✭✭✭CMOTDibbler

You seem to be describing two different things. A dirty windscreen and a fogging windscreen. The cleaners are never going to stop fogging, that's a function of interior vs exterior temperature plus possibly some interior humidity.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,471 ✭✭✭✭the_amazing_raisin

Climate control, put the vents on the window, fan just above low, temp to around 22C and air conditioning on

It seems to be dirty. If it starts to "fog", I can get a clean cloth and rubbing the glass cleans it. Not a wipe to get rid of condensation or whatever. A bit of a scrub as if there's something on the glass, and then it clears. Comes back again fairly quickly.

That usually works alright. Would rather not be using that all the time though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,471 ✭✭✭✭the_amazing_raisin

Its one of those nuisances in winter, I often just leave the climate set that way on cold days. At least you don't have a breeze blowing past your leg and cooling you down

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,136 ✭✭✭CMOTDibbler

Does the cloth come away dirty? That would tell you if it's dirt or moisture. There's also a possibility that you've used so many products on it, you've left a film on the glass.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,263 ✭✭✭hold my beer

It happens my ID3 too, not so much with our ID4, which is odd. I use the hot air to clear it mostly (max front). It only ever becomes an issue with a lowish sun in the sky in front.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,373 ✭✭✭DaveyDave

I have an issue in my Born ever since I got the battery health check/v3.2.1 update. The auto climate has stopped working well and has a mind of its own. If I get in the car on a cold night and the windscreen is fogged up, it won't do anything to clear it unless I manually set it to blow air at the windscreen. The demist button does feck all and now only goes to fan speed 5 whereas previously it was 7.

When I'm in the car, it sometimes starts to fog up after 20-30 minutes. Also the front door windows will fog up because it will stay blowing air at the windscreen for 10-15 minutes rather than blowing air towards the driver, this is with the air conditioning showing it's at 100%.

Dealer says they can't spot anything wrong, but even the software is messed up. When the passenger seat is empty the screen will often show arrows indicating it's on even though passenger air is clearly off on the 'Eco' setting. Likewise, there's times it will show hot, cold or no colour and not match the temperature coming out (i.e blue arrows on screen when warm air is coming out)

In terms of a clean windscreen, CarPro Clarify is a very good cleaner that leaves no streaks but it's important to use a pair of good quality waffle weave towels, one for working the product in and a second to buff. I use these.

Your windscreen will likely be greasy and you'll need to give it 2-3 goes. It helps to have the car under a street lamp or something just so you can see glare on the screen.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,186 ✭✭✭✭Flinty997

A clean screen is easier to demist.

Is their a heater matrix in the ID3 with coolant in it. Having a fog can sometimes be a leak in those.

I find I have to leave mine on all the time recently, otherwise its just on off on off which is pointless. Set to windscreen + low speed and temperature @ 18.5C seems to be working for me without freezing me hole off.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,186 ✭✭✭✭Flinty997

I remember when I had cars with no AC you'd be fighting the car fogging the whole winter.. No longer with AC.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,189 ✭✭✭✭KCross

Do you leave the AC on? You need to do that to dry out the air so that there isnt moisture in the cabin.

Other possibilities are wet carpets (from your shoes) and/or a leak.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,022 ✭✭✭Soarer

No, we never run it really. Just to blast the windscreen when it gets foggy! Moisture in the cabin might be a thing alright as I always have the windows open.

Might try it your way for a while.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 729 ✭✭✭Sam the Sham

I leave AC on at all times. Any effect on mileage is negligible.

Thats your problem… particularly this time of the year when there is alot of moisture around. I get into a clear windscreen each morning, no need to blast anything, but I have AC on all the time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 348 ✭✭Tech_Head

was happening to mine too. I’ve set the a/c schedule to come on in the morning when it’s time to leave for work and again when it’s time to go home. Temp at 18. No issues since.

I also leave the air on auto but tap it until it says high. A/C is off most of the time then.

Press the big AUTO button set your preferred temps, let it alone sorted.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,373 ✭✭✭DaveyDave

The issue is it doesn't work properly and service departments are saying nothing is wrong.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,573 ✭✭✭Buddy Bubs

In my cupra I have an AUTO button and there are 3 settings in that AUTO mode. What's the difference between these 3 settings?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,373 ✭✭✭DaveyDave

It's auto low, medium and high. Handy for keeping it on auto if you want a bit more air coming through but will still adjust automatically if needed.

ID3 OTA 3.7 update failed on two attempts. Throws up an error code and suggests bringing to the garage. Anyone had a similar experience?

I unfortunately didn't photo the specific error code… I also notice that it gives me the option to start the OTA randomly. E.g. It will offer it once, in maybe every 15 journey completions. For example, at the moment, I don't even have the choice to try start it again.

I keep a dehumidifier in my cars over the winter months, seems to help control the moisture in the cabin.

That guy R Symonds is usually pretty pro Tesla too so he's not just having a dig at them for no reason..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 410 ✭✭DrPsychia

His assessment was fair, thorough, and correct. Autopilot doesn't hold a candle to VW Travel Assist(Mobileye). It's uselsss at taking bends, even where road markings are good. Constant disengagements if you even slightly fight the steering wheel from where the system wants to place the car. Bing bongs, phantom braking. Autopilot/TACC distance control isn't reliable at replicating the same distance every time unlike systems using radar. Speed limit identification/change is crap.
Tesla should use the google maps API to integrate this into the navigation system, but I suspect Musk is too cheap to pay for the API.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,781 ✭✭✭✭fits

yep. Way preferred travel sssist. I don’t bother with it in the Tesla it’s so crap.

Oh you should check out the ID.4 thread and see my experience 🫠

My car is currently a driveway ornament and the tow truck is coming tomorrow to drag (yes I mean drag) the car onto the flatbed and bring it to VW

This is after the update bricked it

For anyone getting the 3.7 update, here's some tips

    Don't do it

If you do, make sure you've up to date VW roadside recovery. They only come with 3 years cover from new but you get an extra year when VW service it

The reason I say VW roadside assistance is because they need special equipment to drag the car onto a flatbed. This is because the car will be bricked and you can't disengage the parking brake

BefoBefore doing the update, make sure the 12V battery is charged. Mine died mid update and now the car is D.E.A.D

I've been spending the whole day calling various VW numbers to get the car towed and paid for by VW

    oh my.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,194 ✭✭✭Luna84

That's the one thing Tesla is good at and that is reliable OTA updates. VW got it really wrong but in fairness it's their first crack at it as you always had to go to a dealer to update your car in the past(for example: a VW Golf) or what ever other VW car you owned. Tesla also have really shít auto wipers(people have been complaining about that for years over in Telsa thread) and their self driving isn't the best(not as bad as the wipers though) as was posted here today.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,471 ✭✭✭✭the_amazing_raisin

Well VW have had 5 years to get it right and still can't fix it

It just melts my brain that every update is effectively a full OS installation. How anyone can think they can perform it remotely is beyond me

Hopefully the newer cars are better at this, but without a major OTA update it's hard to know

I think there were some architecture decisions that Tesla got right early on and VW got very, very wrong

That is definitely a lot politer than any of my reactions the past few days 😂

Is it only the ID cars that need to do these OTA updates to new software? ID owners seem to be constantly posting about new software versions here and having hassle.

I've 2 VW group cars a Cupra and Audi and never had to do anything like this, from what I'm reading I think I'd decline any updates if I could, I'm happy with both systems to be honest. As long as they're functioning I'd be happy to stick with them unless there's some revolutionary improvements, which there won't be.
