Baird is gonna get a hat trick and then get called up to start against Italy which he managed to make go ahead by himself

off to a good start with this to be fair!

So in a hypothetical where Leinster are contributing two young talented second rows to the Irish team, they haven't done enough development-wise to justify retaining an NIQ in the position?

How many locks do you want on the books? Would be a waste of money better spent elsewhere.

I think Leinster have established that they know how to balance their books well enough between NIQs and the talent they are fortunate enough to have at their disposal, in order to develop players for Ireland.

Money spent on Fardy could be better utilised at another province.

IRFU need to take steps to let the others catch up , no sense pumping money into Leinster to build a completely ridiculous team.

That's a different issue from stopping Leinster from re-signing Fardy, I presume allocation of funding by the IRFU isn't based on which players each team is signing off of central contracts. But you've got a valid point that more needs to be done to equalise the current situation.

If Leinster re-sign Fardy then Leinster and the IRFU had a conversation about what he ads to the squad both on and off the pitch and ultimately decided that it was a good allocation of the resources available within Leinsters budget.

They aren't going to hamstring a team unless they see good reason to. If Fardy is giving a huge amount to that glut of young forwards coming through then by all accounts leave him at it.

Hamstring a team? You’re joking, right?

Yea exactly, nothing happens that the IRFU don't want to happen or don't see as beneficial to the development of rugby on this island. I'm just saying that trying to balance the wider provincial game by making a change to how the teams are funded, and Fardy being re-signed, are two separate issues.

and what about other provinces? Leinster most certainly dont need fardy. With Ryan, moloney, toner(who wont be with Irish set up for Tokyo much longer so available for leinster more)
And Baird wont be in Irish set up for a while yet

nonsense to say any move like this would hamstring leinster at all.

Fardy turns 36 in July, he might just retire.
LH might be the position where Leinster could invest in a NIE player.

I think Leinster are best placed to decide what they need. It's then up to the IRFU to decide if those needs are beneficial or damaging to developing rugby players for the national team.

So you don't think Fardy contributes a lot?

That's a good team. Having DK, Deegan, Connors and McGrath back is a nice bonus. With next week's game cancelled you'd have thought Ross Byrne might have been released too but excited to see what Harry can do against a very decent Glasgow team.

Looking forward to Baird confirming his messiah status too, obvs

    Messiah status confirmed

We haven’t had a messiah in months at this stage

    Leinster need a 9.

McGrath, JGP, Osborne, HOS and Patterson dont really fill you with hope for future. Not much coming through in ways of 9's either and thats a fact, we may have to dip into market.

We can sign Pienaar and Mathewson in a few years time.

McGrath's 27 and proved he's more than capable at club level. Good enough to win a champions cup and 2 leagues anyways. Patterson's also only second year academy so I wouldn't be writing him off, and this is Osborne's first year in the setup. There's also the likes of Ben Murphy coming through with the U20s.

We're more than stocked with players with potential to keep us ticking over, we don't have to have superstars in every position.

McGrath and JGP do a great job at Leinster. At 28 and 27 they've plenty of years left and the competition between them is helping one another improve. A few years ago I remember seeing that the average starting age for a 9 in P12, T14 and Prem was 28 so age isn't an issue right now.

Also JGP was brought here as a project player who just qualified, he ain't going anywhere for a few years and he's been steadily improving.

Leinster do not need a new 9 right now.

Lots of underage talent at scrumhalf.. No major need for someone to breakthrough at the minute.

Good to see Hughie and PP playing AIL regularly this season. Need gametime to improve decision making.

Fancy Dan Sheehan will be the next academy player to make senior debut and progress quite quickly.
