Mobile phone recycling

I have got a couple of mobile phones that are old and are not used. I want to send them for recycling. The problem is I cannot remember my passcode for the phones and I am not sure if there are some personal information stored on them. Is there anything I can do to wipe them without getting access to the interface? I would like to be sure that there is nothing on them that somebody could use for fraudulent purposes before sending them off. Any tips would be welcome.

In general steps didn't change much, you might find precise instruction by model on G or YT search. Search criteria "hard reset" as you can't unlock phone.
