    Hi folks,

You lovely people helped me a good few years back with initially a new build (2011) and then a slight upgrade (2015 or so).

I am now (finally) putting together a new build. I tend to drift in and out of keeping up to date with gaming tech when I'm due upgrades/new builds so I would really appreciate your advice on the below draft build.

My main question for you guys is am I missing a trick with any of the below? I was going to go with a ryzen CPU but then read Intel is still better for gaming so went with an i5. I have also done a fair bit of monitor research and it looks like the Samsung is the best value for 144hz but open to correction on this. I think everything else is straight forward but would appreciate it if anyone had some comments before I go ahead.

    Thanks all.

    1. What is your budget? ~€1700
    2. What will be the main purpose of the computer? gaming only (FPS mainly)
    3. Do you need a copy of Windows? Maybe... any tips? Do Microsoft care about selling Windows any more?
    4. Can you use any parts from an old computer? I've a few SSDs and a large HDD
    5. Do you need a monitor? Yes, 144hz/1440p
5a. If yes, what size do you need. [19'/20'/22'/24'/etc.] 27
5b. If no, what resolution is your current monitor and do you plan to upgrade in the near future? [1920x1080/1440x900/etc.] [Yes/No]
    6. Do you need any of these peripherals? Have Keyboard and mouse
    7. Are you willing to try overclocking? Never one for overclocking
    8. How can you pay? Any. Would prefer to get it all from amazon
    9. When are you purchasing? Pulling the trigger next week
    10. If you need help building it, where are you based? Nope

    Change notes:

CPU: i7-8700K for hyperthreading - will really help in online shooters to prevent frame drops. Should still overclock to 4.9/5.0 GHz easy.
CPU cooler: NH-U14S is one of the best, nuff said.
Motherboard: Buildzoid recommends Gigabyte so I do, too. Aorus Elite is in the Upper-tier (~250W) for motherboards.
SSD: 970 Evo is overpriced for what you need. Get an ADATA NVMe instead.
GPU: RTX 2070 is massively overpriced. 2060 gets you 90%+ of the performance for £100+ less.
PSU: Riotoro Enigma G2 are rebranded Seasonic Focus Plus models and have 10 year warranty.

Do note that Computex is in 2 weeks so might want to hold off.

Thanks a million Kiki, exactly what I was looking for.

Interesting on the CPU, I'll do some more research on this. Everything else looks good bar the GPU... it's an interesting point you raise and I've seen this point been made online, I think what swayed me in the end was the extra 2GB in the 2070... by the sounds of it you don't think it's worth it?

There's very few titles which require more than 6GB VRAM still.

Main benefit of the 2070 is for RTX Tensor cores - but there's fewer than 10 titles, and still better served with a 2080.

Regarding the CPU, look at frame graphs, e.g. here on GamersNexus: https://www.gamersnexus.net/hwreviews/3407-intel-i5-9600k-cpu-review-vs-2700-2600-8700k
At 1080p/Normal, the 9600K slams into a wall at 100ms three times throughout the course of the test. To explain how this is bad, consider that a single frame at 60FPS takes 16.67ms to present. At 100ms, you’re waiting for 1/10 of a second until you get an update to your game. That’s noticeable. We have other frames that are hitting 40ms and 20ms. 20ms on its own wouldn’t be horrible, but it would need to be a constant 20ms. To bounce between 7ms and 20ms is observable to the user and means that you feel more stuttering playback in the game. This is noticeably jarring performance in Far Cry, and it’s happening even on a 5.2GHz overclock. That shows us that Far Cry wants those extra cores – at least, in theory.

if you are willing to buy i7 just go for 9700k instead of 8700k.
    8 real cores against 6

Great, thanks for that. Only £30 difference on Amazon.

Thanks for your help too kiki, I think I'll go with your recommendation and hold off for Computex, see if that impacts prices. I think I'll go for the 2070 too, just to future proof the rig more than the 2060...

Man I totally forgot about the 9700K! :pac:

With today's news about Intel Hyper-Threading (ZombieLoad bug) it's a better buy than the 8700K.
