Viggo Mortensen and Ian Mckellan In Lord of the Rings are both perfectly cast.

And Christopher Lee. Also him in Prince of Darkness.

Ralph Fiennes as Amon Goeth in Schindler's List

    Oh wow!!

Grant is fantastic in that role! Nobody else could have done it!
A masterpiece and a brilliant performance.

    Ralph Fiennes in Schindler's List

    Chilling performance.

He was so convincing and like Amon Goeth that a survivor (acting as a consultant for the movie) fainted when she saw Fiennes in uniform.

Richard Harris as "Bull" McCabe in the field.

In an interesting twist Harris as Dumbledore.
Even though he was only in 2 of the 8 movies he is still who I picture when I think of the character.

Michael Gambon did his best but was playing a role that wasn't his.

Leslie Nielsen in 'The Naked Gun'.

And Airplane. The writers as we know looked to spoof the disaster movies from the 70's and Nielsen's reputation as a serious drama actor was a big contributor to the overall comedy in the film for delivering the lines in his unflinchingly dead pan manner per those serious disaster movies.

Not a huge marvel fan, but Josh Brolin as Thanos. I thought he was amazing.

Two actors I'm not a big fan of, but i thought were perfect in the roles:
    Colin Farrell - In Bruges
    Brad Pitt - Fight Club

For me this question makes more sense if the movie is based on a source material that you have previously read and formed a view of the characters, then an actor come along and perfectly captures or even exceeds the idea that you already had in your head.

Completely agree with this, otherwise you've no benchmark for how well the role is being portrayed.
Hence I'd vote for Christopher Reeve (is there even a need to say which movie?!?) and David Huddleston in Santa Claus The Movie (1984).

    +1. Superb ensemble casting there.

Hard to imagine anyone else but Basil Rathbone as Sherlock Holmes.

Alec Guinness was so good as George Smiley in TV series of 'Tinker, Tailor....' that John Le Carre wrote in some of his mannerisms in future Smiley novels.

Phil Daniels in quadrophenia for me. I think Brendan Gleeson played a stormer in The Guard too. Ben Kingsley in Sexy Beast.

    No.

I think that poster is thinking of Vivien Leigh or Olivia De Havilland. More than likely, the latter as her and Lombard look a nit alike.

Am watching High Fidelity and there's a lot of great casting in that film (except Laura), but the one that really does it for me is the guy who plays Dick.

He's perfect as that socially awkward music nerd, hilarious.

IMDb said his name is Todd Louiso, don't think I saw him in anything else.

Your bang on with his casting there. He was in Eternal Sunshine of a spotless mind too.

Heard two fellas debating this on the train a while back - Uma Thurman in Kill Bill.

I think it was a stellar bit of casting.

True, but Bruhl is a very good looking guy. It'd not have been an obvious choice for Lauda, yet it works.

For all his faults (How many he has is up for debate) but to be fair to QT he generally is spot on with his casting. Like he wrote John Travoltas character in Pulp Fiction with Michael Madsen in mind (You can see it working in your mind and interestingly they have been confirmed as brothers in later years with his character from Reservior Dogs). Anyway, Travolota was an inspired bit of casting there when his career was in free fall.
