Just wondering if anybody has any suggestions for alternative careers, that may not require years of retraining?

The Fire service seek Engineers from multiple disciplines for roles as a Senior Officer, Assistant Chief for example. These jobs are paid on the same scale as the other Engineers in the Local Authority but the work is more management or people centered. There is training provided through a progressive series of Fire Service Courses.
