Lidl Drumcondra

Anyone know what is happening on the site of the proposed lidl in Drumcondra? Last I heard planning permission had been rejected, however I see a digger working away there these days.

Beside the Skylon hotel. I thought planning had then been approved? Assume so anyway as it is boarded off a few weeks and they have the building beside it. I think it used to be a B&B?

No it was a creche. So that's what's going on there. Doesn't it include the land of the tyre garage too?

It got planning. Lidl + student accommodation.

I thought Lidl got rejected?

They went back to a prior permission (from 2011) and worked off that.

It was approved in 2011. A different planning application was rejected but the old one had its time extended and is still valid.

It has started as per the first post.

Meant to say they have 'Lidl Drumcondra - Coming soon' signage up now.
I presume 9-12months construction time?

Will be interesting to see how much car parking (if any?) there'll be.

Was thinking/hoping they would do like the Aldi on East Wall road and have parking underneath. Maybe? It isn't as if it is already on a quiet road.

Weirdly the extension they got was for planning for a small restaurant and coffee bar, with smallish food store, it got planing after previous ones for a drive through were refused.

They then applied this year to change amend that to similar layout but with a store, but it was refused on 29th May.

Can’t see any other approved application but possibly its hidden away somewhere.

Sure it was 2011? Pretty sure the garage and creche were fully operational there then and for some years after. How would they get planning permission on something they didn't own?

Had been a B&B for years before becoming a creche but that's around 15 years ago now I'd say.

The petrol station closed in 06/07 I think, always a first step in any redevelopment as it's cheaper to let them sit idle for years than do a more expensive cleanup on the land

Garage element continued much longer

Absolute crazy decision by the council to allow this go ahead.

I commute through Drumcondra daily and traffic is already at a standstill along this stretch of road and that’s on public transport!!

I agree to a point but I think a lot of shoppers will be on foot (maybe I'm naive!) and there is parking on premises too.

It definitely has a coffee shop and given other partnerships with Costa I'd say that's a fair bet. I don't know about Lloyds though.

It’s a good addition to the area but the parking should have been restricted to a handful of spaces.

I'd say it will be open tomorrow. I just passed and they have staff in there stocking shelves, posters are up, etc.

BTW the units on the ground floor have stickers up that would indicate a Coffee Shop, Barber Shop and Pharmacy. I don't think that guarantees that those will end up there, no official names up, but it makes sense being next door to the College.

I'm not sure if they're specific for the launch but there are several offers. Inflatable whirlpool hottub for €150 (€200 off) and savings on TVs. Other smaller items also. €10 off vouchers when you spend €50 too.

I give it a week before a cyclist is hit. It's already a pita with the skylon entrance and exit, on that stretch, this will be a whole new world of shambles.

Great shop and internal layout. Nice and spacious. Obviously well stocked and clean since it just opened. Arguably could do with low key signage but otherwise its a fairly decent set up. I didn't check out the car park as I won't be driving to it so I can't comment on that.
