PS would they consider using smaller goals?

Chelsea's gaffer seems to think so.

Chelsea Women's manager Emma Hayes has suggested that the goals in women's football should be made smaller to make sure that goalkeepers can truly show off their skills.

''Men and women can be quite different. I'm going to avoid most stereotypes here but as a rule there's generally a lot of differences between the sexes. Probably the main ones are physical. Men tend to be taller than their female counterparts.''

Noted nutcase Hope Solo on reducing the goal size - "I think it’s sexist to be quite honest, I think it’s infuriating and I take great offence to that."

The women soccer players generally don't dive or try to cheat. Its honestly a breath of fresh air when you watch women's soccer to see the game being played with an ounce of integrity.

England players were going down rather easy yesterday along with moaning at the ref so it has crept into the game

Reduced goal size would just add an extra layer of expense, especially at lower levels.
Local councils/corporations would have to add sets of goals specifically for the womens game. Seems a lot of trouble to go to when each pitch can be shared at the moment.

Not sure it's really necessary anyway as I don't think the number of goals is particularly off the scale. Mens WC is usually around 2.6 gpg, I doubt the womens is going to be much more than 3 gpg.

Interestingly (may not be that interesting) males were much smaller back when the goal size was decided in the mid/late 19th century, so goalkeepers were always intended to struggle to cover the top of the goal.

All new laws are in this World Cup.

It's madness. Slight touch of the hand, no one claims and pen. Arms tucked in, pen. Arm covering face to save nose, pen. Mad.

True, but the point I was making is that nobody asks how the women would do against the men, however that seems to be a recurring theme when it comes to football possibly, as I said, because women's football is still pretty new for a lot of people. The question is why do people feel the need to make that comparison if they're not doing it with other sports? It serves no purpose other than attempt to undermine the abilities of the women players.

Yep. Nobody says they won't watch a womens 100m sprint because they won't beat Bolt's record.

I think the reduced pace of the game adds to that. It makes diving a bit more obvious when it does happen so people dont do it.

I suspect the further down the pyramid you go in mens football the less you see as well

Such sexism in FIFA, it's a disgrace, they need to pay women the same as men ASAP, it's 2019 ffs!!!

That's not that great an achievement. The Cricket World Cup is live only on Sky Sports so only available to those who want to pay a premium for it. Of course a live event on the freely available BBC will get a higher audience.

Women's football generations penny's when compared to the men's game, that's why there is a pay gap

Yeah they just said on commentry that the two centre backs are 5 foot 3!

USA passing it around nicely but under absolutely no pressure so can't really tell anything

Will Thailand get a shot off at all I wonder? The States aren't breaking a sweat here..... and that's 2-0

Who’s the co commentator on RTE? Incredibly reluctant to blame the Thai keeper for an absolute howler. The dead air on the slow mo was incredibly awkward.

    Lisa Fallon.

It took Thailand 28 minutes to get a shot on goal.

3-0 now. Could see double figures by the end.

Whatever about the skill levels, the Americans have so much more pace than the Thai players. There's nothing the Thais can do when they're being run at like that.

    Should've backed this!

Imagine though, being 7-0 then against the US Women's Team and then Carli Llyod comes in and she's p*ssed off for being excluded.

Even at that, the US just need to chip it in with a bit of height and they've a decent chance of scoring.

True, the Thai players are very small and have little or no chance of dealing with high balls.

11-0. That's the type of scoreline that would have to be spelled out so you wouldn't think it's a typo.

Loved the hustle of Rapinoe, up 12-0 and the ball looks like it's trickling out but she sprints across to stop it to whip in another cross.

Very hard to put any spin on a 13-0 defeat if you're a coach.

You cant even lie and say they did well.

Not a good look for the tournament imo, makes it look mickey mouse again when the last Euros did an awful lot to show just how competitive the women's game had become

Morgan, Rapinoe, and Lloyd have all scored in World Cups.  The bench and technical staff over-celebrated.

    This why I don't watch the women's game. ;)

Was there any obvious disparity in size and strength between the two sides?

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,355 ✭✭✭Jim Gazebo

Score the 13,no hassle with that especially goal difference etc, but have some class. Celebrating the last few goals like they had won the world cup. I hope they get battered in this tournament and the other team celebrates like that.

Even on bbc, the American and Alex Scott were like schoolchildren fawning over them, it makes it look a bit mickey mouse again when I actually thought it had progressed really well.

US looked bigger and stronger. And they were better.

As cracked as the Americans are for their sports I think there's a culture that you don't maul the opposition when they are down. Jimmy Johnson coached a Florida University in the 80s that used to slaughter the opposition and they took a lot of heat for it.
I wouldn't have thought the scoreline and celebrations would have gone down too well over there but here it should be less of an issue. You notice it in the PL teams going crazy when they go 6 up.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,956 ✭✭✭✭Omackeral

Germany Spain game a good viewing so far, well matched.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,833 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

Spanish attacking play in the final third letting them down big time. They are efficiently and effectively passing through the German midfield but once they get in and around the German box they are dwelling on the ball too long and not giving each other enough options.

The goal they conceded was poor too, poor hesitation, instead of the keeper or defender taking ownership they left it to each other, in the six yard box and the attacker pounced.

She was not offside. Should have finished it. Wonder if the erroneous flag hadn’t gone up could it have been a peno. Creamed by the keeper.
