300 definitely on the cards. Cummins is a pretty decent no. 9.

The WI's had their foot on the Aussies' throat but just couldn't keep it there.

Hard to see them winning now. Gale must be knackered after standing there watching the ball for 50 overs!

    Cottrell's catch.

He caught it clean, then let go before momentum took him over the line, then re-caught it.

Was the second catch just for show?

Coulter-Nile out 92. Great knock, deserved the ton

Aussies got away big time, Windies really had the foot on the throat for a while but let them away out of it! Sort of game we expect from Ireland :)

    289 the target.

No, if he carried it across the line it would be 6 runs.

Gayle given out twice in three balls appeals them both successfully.

Disgraceful lbw call, the umpire should be sent home, doesn't appear to know the laws

Gayle actually out this time. Challenged again but umpires call this time round.

    Chris Gaffney gets his man.

Why does it go to umpires call when he is partially sighted, and only guessing, half a ball might be hitting. The system is rubbish, especially when you are dealing with a guesser

I know that, and I addressed that.

He let go of the ball before crossing the line.

The rest of the move, the catching it again, it was for show?

No. If he carried it over the boundary its 6, if he caught it and dropped the second one its not out, and the batsmen would score whatever they ran.

Turns out the ball before the wicket should have been given front foot no ball, meaning the wicket ball would have been a free hit

You're joking? Only tuning in and out so missed that if it was said in commentary.

    99-3 now, finely balanced

Stupid run out, 151-4 off 28.

More desperate umpiring. Another out successfully appealed

i think its time to introduce technology to determine whether a bowler has overstepped. there are by far too many no balls being missed.

Its almost umpires are saying to themselves that if the delivery is a wicket taking one then technology after the fact will make the right decision.

Had a win within their reach when both bowling and batting but screwed up. Such is sport and the pressure of the moment.

Windies really threw that away sadly. They let the boot off the neck when bowling and then were too hot headed with the bat, especially Russell, all he needed to do was bat sensibly not try and knock the leather off the ball!

Lots of wides given away by the West Indians, but the way they were bowling that may have been largely unavoidable.

I guess though that Smith anchored the Australian innings and was given great support from the tail end, allowing the likes Coulter-Nile and Carey to get some quick runs

There was some discontent amongst West Indies fans that all the umpire decisions were going against them. Yes a number were overturned on review, but the umpire's calls decisions arguably cost them the match. Equally there was a no-ball not given just before Gayle was out, and I don't think they had any of the luck

Anyway, that's me back to watching on the telly for a couple of weeks before I venture back for a couple of consecutive matches on either side of the Pennines. Hopefully the West Indies are still in it when they play NZ in an Old Trafford day-nighter, as they are very enjoyable to watch.

It's a terrible format because the tournament takes too long to get through it won't be finished until July 14th which is insane.

It's basically the international cricket league rather than a world cup style tournament , people will be fed up of the games well before it gets to the end and the fact that all the teams bar Afghanistan are playing each other constantly takes away any kind of real intrigue to most of the matches. The structure also allows for too much margain for error, Englands loss the other day will probably have no impact on their chances of winning the tournnament. It's a disgrace that more of smaller nations were not included as in previous editions one of the intriguing aspects was how would some smaller nations perform and would they have any real star performers, there's almost none of that with this tournament.

Of course I am sure the tournament structure is like this purely for generation of revenue and thats all that sports bodies care about anymore.

Get what you mean and doubtless truth in it being about TV revenues. However one advantage of spreading out the matches is that the number of abandoned matches due to poor weather can potentially be reduced. If you had say 4 a day, then all could be lost on a bad day and poor weather is a factor in our latitudes.

Based on latest reports on the BBC, it looks like today could be a washout with Pakistan and Sri Lanka sharing the spoils, and possibly Pakistan feeling more hard done by given their significant improvement in the last match

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,762 ✭✭✭✭Inquitus

A result that does neither team any favours.

This stat from the beeb surprised me, especially given England/Wales have hosted it 5 times already:
Both teams took a point from the washout - only the third in World Cup history - and have five from their opening three matches.

Why can't they just reschedule it? There's still more than a month to go until the final

I don't think the rules would allow it until the knockout phase. The schedule is clearly set to get maximum exposure with one match a day, and only 2 when they have staggered starts. Tickets are sold well in advance and many make arrangements for one day but not the next

There's always the question also of do you start again on a second day, or pick up where it finished on the first day. Either way a team potentially on top on day 1 can find the match completely turned round due to different conditions on the second day

Equally every team does have 9 matches scheduled, which makes it unlikely that a team will lose out on their luck with the weather alone
