Just looking back over my accounts during lambing and I spent a small fortune on Lamlac for the pet lambs.

Apart from ways of reducing the number of pet lambs, anyone any ideas on how to reduce this bill? Was half thinking of milking a few goats?? Anyone do this?

How much would you expect to make from pet lambs once slaughtered?
Would you be as well off selling them as pets at 1-2 weeks old?

After 10 days or so I reduced the lambs to two, half litre feeds per day(morning and evening) with ad lib meal, hay and water. They've done very well and I don't notice any weight difference from any other year... This will save you both time and money.

How many did you have? Can't imagine trying to feed each lamb with a bottle to make sure they only get the half litre.

Generally I would sell the pet lambs in late winter when the prices are good. Would hope to make over 100 euro per lamb. It's handy money as lambing starts and they don't need much feeding over the winter.

Our figures would confirm that if you could get €25 for an orphan lamb you're better off financially but I've seen such poor treatment of lambs that I've sold in the past that we rear all our orphan lambs now
