Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

EU flight cancellation compensation

Just wondering if we are entitled to eu flight cancellation compensation. We arrived at alicante airport for our return flight home scheduled for 3.20. There was an accident on the runway a private plane skidded on touchdown at approx 2 pm and therefore no flights could get in or out.
The inbound flight was diverted to Valencia and passengers were bussed to alicante. At 4.22 aer lingus cancelled our flight and we had to source our own flights home which were three days later. They put us up in a hotel that night and gave us a taxi voucher for the airport. We had to source accomadation for the other two nights ourselves.

The airport reopened at 5.40 and other airlines got their passengers home. Our plane flew back to Cork empty, They could have bussed us to Valencia and we could have got home that night.

Is this deemed as extraordinary circumstances and therefore not liable for compensation?

To be honest there isnt much point asking here. You are better off enquiring with aer lingus.

I had a cancelled flight with ryanair 'extraordinary circumstances' snow storm a couple of years ago yet still got €300 reimbursement.

Yes, fairly sure it is , as outside the airlines control

Issue is crew hours, if they bussed or waited to fly in after reopening the crew would likely have been out of hours so could not have flown back which leads to a mess and multiple flights impacted the next day, so they recovered the aircraft and crew back to Cork.

EI should have booked you at their expense to get home and covered reasonable costs until that flight. You should claim for this.

You however are not covered by the EC261 lump sum delay compensation as this is a legitimate case of beyond there control, the airport of departure was closed.
