England get Iran now. This is Southgate's dream.

England as usual are off to a great start in getting another handy tournament draw. They got the worst team from pot 2 in the form of USA.

Edit: And just as I say that, they also get Iran. 🙄

USA & Iran again - just like 1998

    Brazil, Switzerland & Serbia - That's a tough group!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,983 ✭✭✭Degag

But they could automatically place them there without having to draw the ball

Brazil Serbia and Switzerland were all in the same group in 2018 too, what are the chances

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,417 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

Sadly no North Korea, Russia or Israel to round off the group.

    Group F is looking tricky.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,358 ✭✭✭✭sligeach

Saudi Arabia for Group 2 would round off the easiest draw possible for England.

Saudis can’t draw Iran - same confederations

They did their best and drew Saudi Arabia but couldn't go in the group as they're from the same federation as Iran. Poor England, they almost had a clean sweep. That must have been their backup in case something went wrong earlier in the draw.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,630 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

Nice. England could meet Wales or Scotland (or Ukraine).

Whatever about potentially Wales or Scotland vs England, USA vs Iran will be like the Iron Sheik vs Hulk Hogan. Battle of ideologies

Lots of politics and lots or potential rivalries in that group. Practically every country in the group has had a real or economic/cold war with each other.

Going to be very difficult with everything going on.

Initial thoughts on teams to progress:

Group A: Qatar, Ecuador, Netherlands, Senegal

Group B: England, Iran, USA, Scotland/Wales/Ukraine

Group C: Argentina, Saudi Arabia, Mexico, Poland

Group D: France, UAE/Australia/Peru, Denmark, Tunisia

Group E: Spain, Costa Rica/New Zealand, Germany, Japan

Group F: Belgium, Canada, Morocco, Croatia

Group G: Brazil, Serbia, Switzerland, Cameroon

Group H: Portugal, Ghana, Uruguay, South Korea

England alone have fought 2 wars against and numerus with USA. Various wars and rebellions with Scotland and Wales and have dodgy history in Iran going back to the Shah and have been involved in Ukraine both positivity and negatively since WWII

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,417 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

Am I right in thinking both Poland and Mexico have some mad stat about never getting out of groups ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,558 ✭✭✭✭retalivity

Id be very surprised if Ukraine are anywhere near a world cup at the end of the year, for football or non-football reasons

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,525 ✭✭✭✭ArmaniJeanss

Mexico get out of the group all the time but never win a knockout tie.

Not sure about Poland, they did reach semi-final in 82 but may not have won a knockout tie to get there (it was two group phases)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,531 ✭✭✭Brussels Sprout

I don't think a World Cup in Qatar (even in December) is going to be as favourable to the European teams as ones in more temperate climates.

No way only 1 of them falls at the group stages.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,417 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

It might be knockout tie I was thinking of for Mexico.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,417 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

I think group G is gonna be a group of death for 2nd place. USA, Mexico and Japan could sneak out of their groups despite not looking as good currently as they once were

Yeah, they can cause both Croatia and Belgium issues.

Don't think it's as straightforward for Portugal as predicted either.

The US is a very young team but their performances are a bit up and down in the last year. Their main players are 23 and under: Pulisic 23, Reyna 19, Adams 23, McKennie 23, Musah 19, Weah 22, Dest 21.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,853 ✭✭✭Cake Man

Didn’t know this, assumed the usual three games a day for the groups. Presuming more games to run off as they’ve less time to get the WC finished? Yet another reason that it’s ridiculous to have the WC both in Qatar and at that time of year. Don’t get me wrong we all love the WC and football but four games a day a bit much? Think most of us would be doing well just to find the time to watch highlights of 4 full games!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 31,954 ✭✭✭✭Mars Bar

Middle East in December is definitely not a hot environment. No team will struggle with temperatures.

Jumoerrs at the ready ay 10am and 7pm.

Jesus I hope the UAE qualifies. There'll be national holidays all round!

Kyiv have been playing a few game in Poland so I imagine Ukraine will put out some sort of a team for this game.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,053 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

Definitely not right on that. Poland were in a World Cup semi-final in 1982. Lato and Boniek were both on that team. Lato was also in the '74 team whichade the semi-final and Boniek led them to the knockout stages in '86.

I'm not sure of what they did before then.

Mexico made the QF's in '86 where they got beaten on penalties by West Germany.
