Mad stuff in Copenhagen tonight during the penalty shoot out.
Both teams down to 10 men by the end.
The penalty spot wouldn't have looked out of place on pitch 19 in St. Annes.
The paucity of grass was only exceeded by the inability of the takers and half of them skyed it over the bar, I think 3 Serbs in a row managed it.
The Serb keeper kept them in it, scored his own peno too and it was only on taker No. 11 (2nd time around) that the Danes missed and Zvezda went through.

Once the end has been chosen for penalties, can the ref decide at any time that it's no longer "playable" and change ends?

How many players from the squad have they lost over the summer?

I’m not too surprised at that result tonight. Would be very difficult for any team after losing such key first team players as they did.

    Is it not 2?

Admittedly, its De Jong and De Ligt, 2 huge players for them, but bar them I think the rest of the team is the same?

Krasnador, who knocked out Porto in the last round, with their arse handed to them by Olympiakos.

Seems Krasnodar collapsed in the last 15 minutes. Disappointed as I like a few of their players and was curious to see them in the main competition. Tie certainly looks done and dusted now.

Hilarious stuff during the Krasnodar/Olympiacos game. Krasnodar make it 1-0 inside 10 minutes with the crowd believing the miracle comeback is on, only for Olympiacos to score an away goal seconds after the restart. Krasnodar need 5 now.

Less than hilarious stuff in Belgrade, where the ball boys slowed down every single ball return, to the point where the Young Boys keeper ended up kicking the hoarding in frustration. I had a soft spot for the team formerly known as Red Star Belgrade, but those antics, mirrored by Marin on the pitch makes me want to see someone absolutely hockey them in the groups. Hope UEFA noticed as it was desperate stuff altogether.

Strange one in the Ajax game where VAR ruled a goal offside but the player was not part of the goal

VAR picture, player pictured where the line does not go to the ball it is the player Ajax player running in behind who heads the ball back and as you can see he is miles onside

Includes the FIFA Best Player Awards between each round too so it should take a few hours to finish in full.

Agreed, would take any of the others.

Inter Milan are the ones to avoid in Pot 3, they're the Liverpool of the past 2 seasons in that I think they'll get out of the group from 3rd seed.

Lyon another there that I'd prefer to avoid.

Don't really care who we get in Pot 2, if we avoid those 3 teams in 3 and 4 I think we'll be fine.

Can Red Star Belgrade draw Dinamo Zagreb if they are pulled out or is this tie to be avoided? Would be mad if they could, there’d be war! Throw in Zenit and Shakhtar Donetsk and it’s basically WW3 kicking off!

    Hes offside!

But he's not interfering with play and I don't see how this is a clear an obvious error by the ref that means it should be overturned?

Shakhtar and Zenit can't be drawn together.

I would be very surprised if the other 2 aren't kept apart too despite there being no official rule.

And I still think it's bonkers that Ajax can be a pot 2 team, who won their league and were a kick away from last season's final had to navigate 2 qualifying rounds

A case be made that he is interfering the the defenders line tracking the ball. The def has to go around him. Im not saying it was a good call but i can see the call at least

Yep I can see it alright but I think it's very very harsh. I was all for giving VAR a chance but I'm starting to really dislike the way something like this is overturned but they look at Tammy Abraham going down against Liverpool and it isn't overturned by the footage:

    https://twitter.com/tynelittles/status/1161771286911053824

I'd prefer to just let things go and let the football gods balance out the karma.

The only good thing VAR has brought is a couple of great moments for Spurs v Man City

No procedued to keep Red Star and Zagreb apart

No team can play a club from their own association and, based on decisions taken by the UEFA Executive Committee, clubs from Russia and Ukraine must not be drawn in the same group.

Yep that's what I'm saying, but I wouldn't be surprised if there wasn't an unofficial desire to keep Red Star and Zagreb apart

On some level I'm convinced there's rigging going on with these things!

Also, despite both teams dominating domestically many times, and despite having 23 European trophies between them (inc 10 European Cups), it's still amazing to me that you have to go back to 1966 for the only time Liverpool have met Ajax in a competitive game.

They came really close last season but for Lucas Moura, would absolutely love to see them meet in the group stages this season after over 50 years without meeting

The fact that were over half an hour in and they've only drawn Pot 1 is ridiculous, Pot 1 doesn't even matter on its own, it means nothing having one team in each group.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,630 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

Tottenham in with Bayern, Olympiacos and Red Star. I think Poch will be happy enough.

Chelsea get Ajax. Valencia in there as well. Lille in there too. Looks tasty.

Dortmund in with Barca and Inter. Some good ties there. Looking a Group of Death. Slavia Prague there for 4th place.

Benfica in with Zenit. Both will take that. Lyon in too - not bad for Sylvinho. Leipzig added. Looking a very open group.

PSG and Real Madrid! Damn. Some tasty games there. Mbappe will enjoy that. Club Brugge and Galatasaray there too.

Man City get Shakhtar, Dinamo Zagreb. Another very easy draw for Pep. Atalanta added - decent chance for Gasperini to qualify.

Liverpool get Napoli again. Salzburg and Genk in there too. Klopp and Ancelotti will be pleased.

Juve and Atletico again. Bayer Leverkusen added too. Looks a tough group. Lokomotiv Moscow there to make up the numbers.

Yea that's great draws for them, especially when they are low seeds.

Think Chelsea group is very open. Could see any of them going through but a great chance for Frank to qualify for the knockouts.

A lot can happen between now and the ties but if I had to call now who I see advancing:

Group A: Paris Saint-Germain, Real Madrid, Club Brugge, Galatasaray.
Group B: Bayern Munich, Tottenham Hotspur, Olympiacos, Red Star Belgrade.
Group C: Manchester City, Shakhtar Donetsk, Dinamo Zagreb, Atalanta.
Group D:Juventus, Atletico Madrid, Bayer Leverkusen, Lokomotiv Moscow.
Group E: Liverpool, Napoli, Salzburg, Genk.
Group F: Barcelona, Borussia Dortmund, Internazionale, Slavia Praha.
Group G: Zenit Saint Petersburg, Benfica, Lyon, RB Leipzig.
Group H: Chelsea, Ajax, Valencia, Lille.

Groups D, F, G and H look to me the trickiest to call. I think Leverkusen have the firepower to cause an upset and I'm not sure how Atletico will fare without Griezmann. Will Morata and Felix step up?

Coin toss between Dortmund and Inter. If it were last season I'd strongly favour Dortmund but Conte is a top coach and Lukaku can cause problems. I'd lean slightly for Dortmund due to their attacking threat.

Group G is anyone's guess as all sides are capable of beating one another. Again I'd lean towards Lyon and Leipzig for their attacking talents.

Think Group H is a case of Chelsea and one other. Not convinced about Valencia's chances. Ajax and Lille have both lost big players this summer. I'd give the nod to Ajax for their experience but I think Lille can push them close.
