Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Atalanta game is a 7 goal thriller.

Ilicic gets a 4th goal! What a night for him and Atalanta.

Forsberg makes it 3-0 after 26 seconds on the pitch

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 33,246 CMod ✭✭✭✭ShamoBuc

On for only 26 seconds and buries the 3rd.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,022 ✭✭✭✭~Rebel~

And that's 3 for Leipzig, Forsberg only on the pitch a few seconds.

Spurs just never in this tie from minute one.

Wonder if Malachi Fagan-Walcott has any Irish in him. Malachi Fagan sounds like the name of a Roscommon farmer.

Shame Parrott didn't get any minutes. Game was well over going into the final thirty so don't see the harm in throwing him on.

Jaysus, Spurs were just atrocious in every area of the pitch.

No you're wrong. If they had Sir Harry and Son all would be ticketyboo!

To be honest, I think the worst thing that could happen for Jose (from his point of view) is that Parrott would score in a game where that goal doesn't matter. Get's all the media attention about Parrott being potentially deserving of a place in the team, but none of the benefits of tournament progression.

He's not a man who really wants solutions, unless those solutions are on his terms. As much as anything he wants excuses and scapegoats.

Mourinho is an obsolete busted flush. He's became the specialist in failure he once taunted Wenger about being. His tactics are stale. The quick pressing game blows his tactics completely out of the water.

Llorris was shocking last night, especially for the first goal, wouldn't catch a virus.

Ya a real battle of the past vs present last night.

When Jose left his last job, I remember saying he should never be employed by a top team again.
He is from a bygone age. Football has changed. He can't.

Spurs made a bad call employing him. And at 15mill a year, total madness.

Once he leaves Spurs, I can't see who would ever employ him.

I thought United would be his last big Premier League job. And with the focus on lore attractive/attacking football at teams like PSG and in Italy, I thought he might have trouble finding a top team at all.

There are mitigating factors at Spurs - the injuries, the short squad etc - but it has a real look of season three Jose already. Unhappy players, illogical tactics, public accusations that people aren't trying/re their injuries and so on.

Last nights result was no surprise. The first leg could have been as bad.

Fascinated to see where Leipzig and Nagelsmann can go. They've a bit of money behind them so hopefully they can resist the big clubs in the summer for some of their players because keeping that squad together for another year or two could reap major rewards I think.

Mourinho hasn't overseen a Champions League knockout victory since April 2014.

That’s the stat that matters the most imo. Two legged ties at the sharp end in Europe were the context for his greatest nights in the sport. Running down the touch line at Old Trafford or his thin blue and black line frustrating Messi and Guardiola at the Nou Camp. The way Sevilla and RB Leipzig played out were unimaginable in 2010. The lack of control exerted by Utd and Spurs respectively in either tie is the sure sign of a manager caught in the wrong tactical era.

In 2010 I would have argued Mourinho was on his way to being the goat. I was completely wrong in that. He’s a modern day Trappatoni and I expect his career arc will play out in a similar fashion from here.

Is it that crazy a stat though? Yes it's 6 years since 2014 but since that season until last night I think it's only 2 ties:

2015 v PSG, Chelsea out on away goals 3-3
    2018 v Seville, United out 2-1

I think reports of Jose's demise have been greatly exaggerated. Let's remember his Tottenham side last night were without Kane, Son and Bergwijn. Also, as recently as 2018 he finished second with a dreadful United side - and his comment that it was one of his greatest achievements seems to have been vindicated in subsequent seasons.

I'd also caution Champions League knockout performances as a barometer of a manager's capability are a questionable metric. Valverde and Poch reached the semis last season - both now out of a job. The season before, Eusebio di Francesco reached the semis with Roma - also now out of a job.

It looks like Mourinho's man management skills aren't what they used to be a decade ago when players looked like they'd run through a wall for him, but I certainly won't write off someone with his undoubted knowledge. Especially not in a rdemptive sport like this where Ranieri can go from flopping spectacularly with Greece to winning the Premier League. It's not even as if Mourinho has flopped as such. I saw it mentioned last night that he hasn't been good in years, but he won the Europa League in 2017 and was 2nd in the PL in 2018.

He'll win many more trophies I'm sure.

    Tonight's teams:
Liverpool XI: Adrian; Alexander-Arnold, Gomez, Van Dijk, Robertson; Oxlade-Chamberlain, Henderson, Wijnaldum; Salah, Firmino, Mane.

Atletico Madrid XI: Oblak; Trippier, Savic, Felipe, Lodi; Correa, Saul, Partey, Koke; Costa, Felix.
PSG XI: Navas; Kehrer, Marquinhos, Kimpembe, Bernat; Di Maria, Gueye, Paredes, Neymar; Cavani, Sarabia.

Borussia Dortmund XI: Burki; Pisczek, Hummels, Zagadou; Hakimi, Witsel, Can Guerreiro; Sancho, Haaland, Hazard.

Robertson fit for Liverpool. Costa starting for Atletico ahead of Morata. Surprised Trippier got the nod ahead of Vrsaljko. Can see Mane getting joy against him.

PSG line-up looks very dodgy to me. Mbappe has been struggling with a throat infection so he's on the bench. Surprised Cavani got the nod over Icardi. Verratti and Meunier are suspended, and Thiago Silva is injured. Add in the fact it's behind closed doors and it's all falling into place nicely for Dortmund. On paper I think I'd fancy Dortmund even to win the 2nd leg tonight. Paredes and Gueye aren't anything to fear.

I'll go 3-0 Liverpool and 2-1 Dortmund. Expecting better from these games compared to last night.

McManaman surely must have had to do a taping test or something. How did this happen???

Have the PSG game open in a little window on my second screen - looks like Neymar might have hurt his shoulder a bit by doing a big huge elaborate dive. I'm sure he'll be grand, just funny to see.

Probably rightly so really... whatever about domestic games, it's not a great idea to have lads flying all over Europe. They should really actively say it now though, to stop the rush of fans booking flights and accommodation when their team secures a spot in the quarter finals. Surprised they haven't said that already actually.

Well QF draw is not until next week and with games next week already behind closed doors UEFA might just say that

That's true - it somehow slipped my mind that even when someone's team gets through now, they still don't know where they're going, or when, yet :o

Great chance for Cavani through on goal but Burki saves.

Neymar with a header makes it 1-0. Advantage PSG as it stands. Probably merited on general play thus far.

In the PSG game, why is there a stadium announcer...there are no fans

If a goal is scored in a stadium, but no one is there to see it, is it really a goal?

Dortmund 2-0 down. Expected much better from them. I like Favre but he's got to pull out a performance from them in the second half.

How have Liverpool not scored a second. Absolutely battering them

    Poor performance from Dortmund.
    Can now off

The behind closed doors things is an odd atmosphere.

    Dortmund down to ten men

Fairly big melee in Paris results in a second yellow for Can.

Di Maria booked so if PSG reach the last 8 he'll be out of the first leg.

    Poor finishing.

Atletico are atrocious in possession ,they dont even seem to want to try and retain possession.

This reeks of one of those matches where the better team slaughters the other team and deserves to win, but then they get suckered punched by a fluke goal.

Poor finishing and Oblak having a very solid game. No astonishing saves exactly, but just a lot of good ones.
