Finished 2-2. Ander Herrera had a great game when he came on and scored a great header. I thought Partey was very good before he went off. Cuadrado was fantastic for Juve in the second half, pjanic was excellent as always, Ronaldo also nearly scored a wonder goal at the end.

    Hector Herrera.

    Hector Herrera.

    Yes you're right, the Mexican.

I take it Shaktar are now not much of a team what with the ongoing conflict with Russian influencers.

Its night one but a lot of the big sides have a lot of work to do. I'd be amazed if Bayern, Atletico or Madrid do go far this year, they all dipped last season & haven't improved their sides much this season.
Real have looked this way for around a year now. Pretty leggy in midfield & dodgy at the back. Things aren't improving much since Zidane has returned. Stunned that's their first defeat of the season as they don't convince. I dont know what has happened Kroos, Varane, Ramos, Courtois, Modric, Marcelo & Casemiro but all have been very poor since they won the Champions League.

Madrid are just a stale team. Been together too long and too many faces past their sell by.

Their midfield is too old and slow as well.

I think a lot of them haven't the desire or hunger any more after winning so many CLs.

I agree the Madrid midfield looks stale. Think Fabian Ruiz and Kante would be good targets for them next summer.

I agree the Madrid midfield looks stale. Think Fabian Ruiz and Kante would be good targets for them next summer.

They had a midfield tonight of Casemiro, James and Kroos.

The 1st is young but slow, pondering and unexciting.
Second is vastly over-rated. They tried their best to get shot of him.
Kroos has been poor for a couple of years now.

Kante would be a good addition. Would be a new Makelele for them. Casemiro is meant to do that kind of job in there, but he couldn't lace Kante's boots.

He juggled the ball onto his foot with his hand ffs :D

That's a disallowed goal before and after VAR, and before and after any handball changes. That was never allowed.

3-0 PSG. Meunier caps off a deserved win by catching Madrid on the break.

Full-Time and Paris win it 3-0. Deserved victory for the home side who dominated the midfield. .

Thing is, PSG seem to win well at home and then get hammered away. Expect to see Real win 3 or 4 nil on the return fixture.

One defeat isnt the end of the world for any team in the group stages.

It's not, but they've been poor enough in LaLiga too dropping 4 points in 4 matches. Others aren't doing great either but he finished last season pretty badly with 3 losses, 1 draw and 1 win in the last 5. He really needed a good start in all comps to keep the heat off in my opinion. I can't see him lasting after spending quite a bit of money during the summer too

Not many big ties this week....Spurs Bayern probably going to be the best one.
    Rest all very uninspiring.

For me it's Barca Inter and Slavia Borussia.

After watching Slavia last time it might be interesting to see against Borussia that used to be fun to watch.

Not sure if that Borussia is still alive, though.

Liverpool have a tricky fixture coming up against Leicester next weekend. Are Red Bull, minus Haaland, good enough to cause Liverpool problems at Anfield or will Klopp be able to rest a few bodies?

Pool lost opener so can’t afford to rest a few I reckon

I wouldn't expect many changes to the Pool side - maybe Milner into the midfield, Gomez to the defence or, potentially, Origi up front. But it won't be mass rotation.

As was noted, the defeat to Napoli doesn't leave much wiggle room. In isolation, it's not a disastrous result but follow it with dropped points v Salzburg and it puts a lot of pressure on the rest of the games.

have Liverpool ever come out of the group stages at a canter? It always seems to go down to the last game with some shot flashing wide in the last minute that would have put us out.

2017/18 wasn't too taxing. Two draws to start, which wasn't ideal, but that was followed by two absolute hammerings of Maribor to essentially seal qualification.

I certainly don't remember major stress levels anyway, unlike last year!!

I think we should be looking at 9/9 in the next three games. And that's not meant to be dismissive of the quality of the opposition but any top seed should expect to win home and away against the bottom seat, and to win their home games.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,630 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

    Teams for the early fixtures:
Real Madrid: Courtois; Carvajal, Varane, Ramos, Nacho; Modric, Casemiro, Kroos; Vazquez, Benzema, Hazard.

Club Brugge XI: Mignolet; Mata, Mechele, Deli, Ricca; Vormer, Rits, Vanaken; Diatta, Bonaventure, Tau.
Atalanta XI: Gollini; Toloi, Masiello, Palomino; Hateboer, de Roon, Pasalic, Castagne; Ilicic, Zapata, Gomez.

Shakhtar Donetsk XI: Pyatov; Bolbat, Kryvtsov, Matviyenko, Ismaily; Alan Patrick, Stepanenko; Marlos, Kovalenko, Taison; Moraes.

Going to watch Madrid/Brugge. I'm sure Hazard will enjoy playing against a Belgian side. Perhaps this is the moment he shows his Chelsea form from last season.

Hope Atalanta win their game, though Shakhtar can be tricky. Zapata is in good form and might be the difference maker.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,746 ✭✭✭BullBlackNova

I'd like Atalanta to get some points on the board - even if they don't make it out of their group, I'd like them to give a good showing of themselves. The hammering by Dinamo was an awful start so I don't have high hopes but hopefully...

Won't catch either of these but would love a Mignolet masterclass to keep Madrid quiet!

Not as many headline ties this week but Spurs v Bayern could be tasty. Juve v Leverkusen and Galatasaray v PSG look good too.

Tomorrow I'll be at Liverpool v Salzburg so won't see any of the others. I'm very excited - first Champions League tie for me! :D

    Great save from Mignolet.

Atalanta leading Shakhtar 1-0 via a Zapata goal. Ilicic had a penalty saved - I brought him into my FF team.

Fecks sake I didn't know this was on Virgin Blurry One.

Very enjoyable first half and the possibility of a big upset now on the cards. Credit to Brugge whose gameplan of sitting back and hitting Madrid on the break has worked. The trio of Tau, Diatta and Bonanventure Dennis causing problems. Been impressed with the CB Mata as well. Kroos has missed good chances for Madrid while Benzema has looked a threat. They look sloppy defensively though and are giving the ball away too much. It's all set up for a cracking second half.

In the other game, Shakhtar have equalised against Atalanta through Junior Moraes.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,661 ✭✭✭✭Arghus

Some heroic defending from Brugge and they look very dangerous on the counter. I thought I had no interest in the game, but that was an absorbing half.

  • Registered Users Posts: 11,611 ✭✭✭✭ERG89

I doubt he could make up for pathetic defending but Valverde was Madrid's best player in the derby & is on the bench tonight. Time to stop waiting for the lads to find form Zizou

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,949 ✭✭✭✭Zebra3

The Madrid defence has no interest in tracking back.

Club very lucky with the two goals but there can’t be any complaints.

Pre-VAR days though Madrid would be getting away with it.

So close to 3-0 great blocking by Areola

Ha Ramos scores 1-2, wait VAR...yadda yadda yadda

    Given 1-2

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,630 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

Big stop from Areola to stop it being 3-0!

And moments later it's 2-1. Ramos with a header after VAR check. Thought he looked offside.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,378 ✭✭✭✭TitianGerm
