The U20s start their campaign v Tipp on Cusack Park on Saturday.

It feels like a long time since we even won a match at this level, but under the round robin system we get guaranteed 4 games - so hopefully this is the year to put it right.

In fairness, the squad 2 years ago was completely different, so whether it was a win or a loss by 40 points, I don’t think referencing it means anything. Tipp’s team insanely different too (missing best player from last year)

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,309 ✭✭✭evolvingtipperary101

I'm pretty sure it's a new Tipp team. Rowan and Ryan would have been subs last year.

Brian O'Connell used a sweeper in the munster final last year - is he still using one?

It is relevant, as losing by 40 points is not so much a reflection of the talent, rather the shambolic lack of preparation.

I know the Tipp team is different from last year, but still. I’d rate a win over them much more than say a Kerry or a Waterford. We know they consistently produce a lot of good hurlers.

    Clare 2-18 Limerick 0-9

in my best pat spillane accent the best way to describe todays game is , 'while clare and limerick are heading to division 3 ,limerick reminded us today what a division 4 team look like '

yes it was that bad limerick didnt want to be there . they have had a turbulent few months and look to have gone backwards about 3 years since the last time the two teams met 11 months ago , clare made 8 or 9 changes from the trip to derry , freshening things up by starting mark mcinerney , daniel walsh , ike ugweru ,cillian and brendy rouine, ciaran downs and micheal garry , and the future of clare football did not disappoint

the game was controlled from start to finish leading by 8 at half time , it turned into a challenge game in the second half goals at either end of the half by mark mcinerney and ciaran downes and a limerick sending off in between for james naughton didnt make the game any easier on the shannonsiders

we looked fresh today . we actually moved the ball well moved it fast , which makes me ask did we get caught up in such a rut in beating louth one of kildare/meath/cork and final game against limerick and reach 6 points every year that we eventually got caught sleeping

we have excellent players in this team , mcmahon is almost a direct replacement to his neighbors from clondegad , the only diffrence i see is brennan was a better hurler , bohannan is a top midfielder ,he proved this against the likes of mccarthy of dublin ,rodgers of derry and mcguire of cork this year and feealy of kildare

the more i look at it we should never be in this mess , but as we face limerick again next year a really good westmeath side an improving down and offally teams along with sligo, wicklow and Antrim the quota of points has now gone from 6 to 10 or maybe even 12 to get back to where we were today at 2 o'clock , we have the players do we have the fight

    clare scorers

    Mark McInerney 1-03 1

    Emmet McMahon 0-05

    Keelan Sexton 0-05

    Aaron Griffin 0-03

    Daniel Walsh 0-01

    Podge 0-01

    Shane Griffin 0-01

just on the hurling over the week , great win by the minors on wednesday night , some of them lads look really promising , young michael collins's goal in the second half was outstanding

its also great to see a strong cratloe/clonlara contingent in that side , they have some of the best underage coaching in the county so when a fella makes the clare team from south clare you take notice

yesterday was a really good game in the 20s , ref was a bit confusing let a lot of stuff go then blew for some very soft things , but in truth i felt tipperary were the better side marginally , we raced in to a big lead inside the first 1/4 while tipp lead by a point by half time , and most of the second half until late in the game when the lead see sawed a few times before patrick crotty notched over an equalizer late in the game

terrance fahey has done some job with that team . about 5 or 6 of that team that started yesterday lost by 40 points to cork a few years back not to mention the work he has done with coneeley and hogan at the back , we might be asking questions in clare hurling about 3 and 6 come championship but these two boys wont be long answering them questions in years to come , inside forward line is a little light but young smythe from kilenana is promising as we all know

  • Registered Users Posts: 588 ✭✭✭Treble double

Emmet McMahon is doing OK, but he is no Gary Brennan.

This has proven to be a particularly weak Div 2 with Meath and Kildare a shambles and Limerick players revolting against their manager

  • Registered Users Posts: 676 ✭✭✭supernova5

Well the Under 20's showed great character again to come back and salvage a draw, they are a hard working, useful tenacious side. but I must say also very frustrating to watch as time and time again coming out of defence they try to break the tackle, run into traffic, turn over ball and give up the cheap scores. If they omitted this from their game plan they would clearly be celebrating 2 wins now instead of 2 draws

  • Registered Users Posts: 676 ✭✭✭supernova5

oh and who are these geniuses within the Gaa that scheduled Clare and Limerick to play 2 games within the space of 4 days? absolutely mind - boggling stuff

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,274 ✭✭✭Figerty

Same for both of them. College exams coming etc. Just get on with it.

  • Registered Users Posts: 722 ✭✭✭caddy16

To be fair Clare couldn't provide a venue for a midweek game so was changed to the Saturday. Limerick game moved because of the weather so worked out fair.

  • Ya have to admit Clare definitely deserved at least a draw. Crotty chap was very good

From watching Terence Fahey/ Thomas Kelly coached teams its not something they do very often

They were over the tulla team that won the hearty cup, and both have been involved with their own clubs , whitegate and inagh/K you never associated that type of hurling with either clubs or school

It was a tactic to compromise Limericks taller backs , but it was awful to watch

  • Registered Users Posts: 81 ✭✭KerryM9

When are tickets on sale for the Tipp game in a few weeks?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,124 ✭✭✭windy shepard henderson

next week id say going on last year , id swore the tickets went on sale last year around the second Thursday or Friday of April , but be warned , the gaa had a habit last year of saying games were sold out then magically produced another 5000 tickets closer to the game be it the group stage or the munster fiinal

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,124 ✭✭✭windy shepard henderson

to be honest he is a serious talent , can play anywhere , kicks off both feet and scores 3 to 4 points a game , he is deffinatly the closest to brennan we have seen

to be fair you have summarized perfectly division 2 football over the last 7 years that we occupied the division , we did everything right to preserve that status up until the last 20 minutes against kildare . at times we lived a charmed life but we survived in years past , it caught up with us this year and it shouldn't have especially with 4 home games , i know you probably disagree but ithink we will be back up shortly enough we have a nice group of players coming through for this level

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,124 ✭✭✭windy shepard henderson

he was excellent last year at senior level but almost too young for it , he played in a number of league games and a couple of championship games , but after a poor club championship he lost his place in the senior side ,he is very good but its very early for him i reckon hes under age next year too

that Clare team has some excellent prospects at the back , adam hogan is close to starting for the senior team and john corneally and ian mcnamara will be future regulars , oran cahil and darah lohan are prospects too

a number of thes lads lost by 40 points in a minor championship game to cork a few years ago so in terms of development it has been huge since then , mr Mulcahy from UL is a serious reason behind the improvements a top class S/C coach

i actually taught limerick were the better side ,english is a giant at this level and our game plan was to bypass the likes of him with a short hand passing game that was hard to watch at times , o'donovan was excellent both on frees and from play , interesting to see a lad from as far west as templeglentine look so promising but that Fitzgerald lad looks really good too

re the limerick lads you mentioned I totally agree, you're picking my thoughts re the lad from templeglentine.

not sure if limerick were better very closely matched for me

Really hard to see Clare getting a win this weekend.

The league match showed a big gap between the teams, little to suggest we can bridge that gap unfortunately.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 625 ✭✭✭dohboy

    Mighty win.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,382 ✭✭✭Gael85

Great win for footballers. First Munster victory over Cork since 1997.

  • Registered Users Posts: 202 ✭✭KIB4Life

Some win from Clare, when backs are to the wall for Clare, they seem to produce the goods. Never enjoyed a finish to a game as much.

Clare seemed to have learned a lot from the league meeting between the teams, Jamie Malone in the sweeper role was outstanding by far his best game this year for Clare.

Clare frustrated the life out of Cork with their defensive structure and but for some sloppy lazy fouls, they should have really been ahead at half time.

The introduction of Darren O’Neill at half time, was crucial he was outstanding in breaking ball and catching kick outs. Cork destroyed us on breaking ball in the league, but Podge was missing today and he was a massive boost for winning ball and his overall playmaking ability.

Keelan was once again outstanding it was helped that Clare were more direct and fed him ball as he is a great ball winner, strong and two footed.

I would argue that in Manus Doherty and Cillian Brennan we have two of the best man marking backs that you will find in the country.

That final score summed Clare up could have tried to keep ball and hold out for extra time, but Ciaran Russell made the burst up field like he done all game and had composure to offload to Keelan and then Keelan to Jamie, who picked a lovely pass to Cillian Rouine who made the burst from corner back to fist the winner. Conditioning cannot be questioned of the Clare lads as they were still full of running towards the end.

great win mighty stuff , hard to believe its 26 years ago since the last minute martin daly goal and only our 4th win in championship over cork , but we have to finish the job now this counts for nothing if we dont beat limerick , and being honest thats going to be another tough task

i feel the cork forwards have a lot of answering to do in brian hurleys absence but in truth so dose their midfield , then again you had been talking up darren o neils performances up in dublin a few years back , he was excellent today when he came on

i am delighted for this man in particular he was distraught when we got relegated , he worked so hard over the years to maintain a top 16 place for us , and i think in one or two games this year the players got complacent on him hence the Kildare result in particular another colm collins signature stamped victory

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,124 ✭✭✭windy shepard henderson

totally agree with our full back line them boys are excellent , they even add more to our attack then most of our middle 3rd , the defencive structure was always good and brian carson is the man to thank there ,

keelan is a top forward but loses his head at times , if he keeps his feet on the floor hes one of the top inside forwards in the country his point midway through the 2nd half was top class as was his first , podge kicked a super score too

the last score highlights what we should be doing more , attacking at pace , we can be seriously dangerous when we move the ball fast rather then going over and back the field for 20 or 30 phases of possession

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,124 ✭✭✭windy shepard henderson

ì hear both are going abroad for the summer , Ciaran will be back before the year ends for sure for the club championship

  • Registered Users Posts: 202 ✭✭KIB4Life

Aaron Griffin was in the subs today, so he is definitely not gone from panel.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,124 ✭✭✭windy shepard henderson

yeah i saw that , whats the story there , although i met ciaran and his father on the way out so maybe both are still heading away , , i now ciaran is just as he has hit serious form

Just a quick observation from yesterdays match. Firstly well done on a great victory…..missed the highlights so will have a look on RTE player later. In any case, was the Padraig Collins who according to RTE web site the same ‘Paudge Collins’ who played with the hurlers and son of the manager…? If so what happened his hurling career….? According to e we Wikipedia he is only 31…..? From memory he would have been a regular with the hurlers and was definitely on the 2013 team….? Wikipedia also had him as being only 1.52m / 5’ 3’’ in height, surely he’s taller than that…?

That's the same Podge, long story short he was told he couldn't be a dual player and to choose a sport, he went with football.

  • Registered Users Posts: 722 ✭✭✭caddy16

Absolutely scandalous that the minor match was called of 15 mins before throw in after teams and supporters had travelled down to Waterford. Anyone looking at the matches played there a couple of weeks ago knew how bad the pitch was and with the rain that fell today the call should have been made hours ago, absolutely shocking.

Had the exact same thing happen to me during a league fixture with the Galway hurlers in 2019 went down and game was called off travelled back a week later.

Anyone selling Clare jerseys? All years and sizes.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,124 ✭✭✭windy shepard henderson

excellent week down in waterford for the minor and u20 hurlers and minor footballers ,

minor hurlers look to be progressing well , a bad night in limerick has been rectified by a hard fought win last night in the fraher , another super performance by michael o connell with 4 points from play , young gunning from broadford and sheedy from the bridge look like really good prospects going forward

little between the minor footballers in lemybrien thrusday night in open play but efficiency in front of goal was top class and was a huge difference , clare out scored waterford 3-11 to 0-4 points from open play , gearoid barry kicked 2-2 from play while darragh townsand from cooraclare looked excellent kicking 0-3 points from play , waterford worked hard but lacked in front of goal

but the result and performance of the week was on thursday night when the u20s defeated the home side 2-26 to 0-18 in the fraher , sennan dunford a man with huge waterford confections was excellent for us , big strong forward hard to mark scored 2-1-03 from play and set up the keith smyth goal

smyth is looking like a really good free taker too , jack oneill and sean rynne had huge games in the middle of the park , adam hogan was solid on patrick fitzgerld keeping him to just one point from play , goalkeeper aaron shannahan looked solid also

the more direct style of hurling also seemed to suit our lads too , a much more similar looking terance fahey side from the short handpassing tactics in the limerick game , big game now against cork if we are to guarantee a place in the latter stages of the championship

  • Registered Users Posts: 81 ✭✭KerryM9

If Clare beat Limerick in the football where is the Munster final on?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,124 ✭✭✭windy shepard henderson

the Gaelic grounds , if either team win , limerick traveled to kerry last year , they have a home and away arrangement , we have a neutral clause

just a note on Senan Dunford, he had not featured in their first two games which is interesting, Do you know what exactly are his connections to Waterford. Dunford is a reasonably common name in the west of the county

Niall O'Farrell who had been doing well in the Tipp and Limerick games wasen't playing the last day, the format this year allows players good exposure and development opportunities but its just a pity all the games are crammed into a few weeks time span
