LH flight diversion to Shannon

    Bit of an odd one.

    The flight crew confirmed that they wished to divert to Dublin Airport to have a male passenger “off-loaded”.

    The Airbus A350-900 jet made a U-turn west of Clifden and began to route towards Dublin but was unable to land there because the crew required a longer runway to cater for the extra weight they were carrying.

    The crew turned around over the Irish Sea northeast of Dublin and diverted instead to Shannon Airport where the runway, at 3,200 metres or 3.25km long, is the longest in the country.
    Why not divert straight to Shannon which would have been closer?

    not a pilot but

    LH handling facilities for preference from ops : I'd say as Lufty dont fly to Shannon but once they cranked the numbers into the abacus they needed longer rwy than what dub could offer

    Dublin makes sense for getting pax onward too, they just didnt run the numbers when picking diversions. With a full load of fuel to cross the Atlantic they'd be a lot heavier over Ireland than they would have been landing stateside.

    It looks like they were only on the ground at SNN for 2 hours and continued on to the US minus the "off-loaded" passenger presumably, and arriving in Newark about five hours late ...

    There's no hiding of information nowadays with FR24 logging everything. :D

    They were, but say there were delays getting bag handlers etc. Doesnt take much to push a crew over their allowable hours (AFAIK, not a pilot). Airlines do well to plan for worst case where possible.
