Assuming they don't change the entry system when are 2020 entries likely to open?

They have always opened within a week previously.
Recently they also added a system to allow this year's entrants first refusal.

Given the finisher numbers were 5000 less than capacity I can't see a ballot happening

Hopefully they get to a point where the I.T. people can enable transfers. I was in Amsterdam last week and IIRC you could transfer your entry online up to the middle of the week of the race.

The race has nowhere near the percentage level of finishers to registrations or initial demand to suggest a ballot is needed. They should think carefully about this as it could alienate a lot of club people from the national marathon.

Great day and all, they really need to sort out the water situation from mile 15 on though. Same as the half this year handing out plastic cups to people I would have been around the 345 mark. think they could fit an extra water station in during the second half , 13,16,19 miles is to big a gap I think for stations and people getting plastic glasses is pretty poor there too.

I think the water situation is more the area's it suits them but I'd agree with you.

There is plenty of space where they have the stops in the 1st half water. If they moved them it would be a on a road where it be more tighter or not as easy to set up if you think of where they are.

I thought they said cups at last stop during the week but maybe I was wrong and map has a cup icon at 24 miles and bottle at 21.5 so maybe a fk up on the delivery.

It seems like in the 2nd half it is have as few as possible when really if prefer them more closer. I think the rules state every 3 miles/5km.

I'd like to see a water stop after Walkinstown roundabout. After that 2 mile drag you deserve a drop of something. Yes you can carry one and I usually do from start to finish.

It is a tough run from 18.5 to 21.5 miles without a drop and then get handed a cup of water or Lucozade after that miles you end up grabbing a few as another 2.5 miles before another drop is not easy if struggling.

If cups are going to be used on some stops it should be earlier like 1st and maybe 11 miles stop. Of if going all cups then stations have to be every 2 miles or so.

That is just my opinion and that is worth fk all

IF a ballot system comes in it is my understanding that clubs would be facilitated first and that the ballot would be for the remaining entries for the general public.

As a club runner that is all well and good but how long do you leave it open to clubs before giving it to the general public?

The general public make it the numbers that it is and some people live in bally go backwards and literally miles away from a club. They might have entered for last 5,10,15 years and they should be treated less than someone who has never run it before cause they joined a club this year?

No easy way but previous runners should get in before rookies. Maybe some qualifying times also

Let the pacers go at the start, they werent even a thought, ran really conservative until 7 miles, caught them at 19 and left them at around 21. Couldnt have imagined a better race, delighted.

Really enjoyed that, could have gone a bit faster in 7-14 miles but as expected I was pretty much done by mile 22 and any attempt to push on was met with a stark warning that I would be left writhing in agony on the ground. :D

Surely this just adds more administration costs to DCM without actually gaining anything extra from doing the lottery.

    Joke of a decision.
How is that going to fix the fact 20% of entrants don't take part come race day and the number is wasted?

There should be a decent company sourced for entry management and each person can cancel any time up until 4 weeks out which would put their bib back into the pool to be reallocated based on a queue system for oversubscription.
That's the only way they will get near the capacity.

Yeah I cant see any reasoning behind this its not like there is 30 thousand people trying to enter. I would say most people who miss out are one the who decide late to enter.

I think they are doing it pretty well to be honest. The course can't really take any more than 20,000 runners and they sell 22,500 places on the understanding x% won't turn up, which is exactly what happened. 5,000 not showing up was probably on the very high side of expectations. That's a 22% drop out rate. Massive really.
Looks like they plan for approximately 10% no shows. 20,000 runners would 8.8%.

Watched it at Bushy Park for a while, amazing weather for it, I hope ye all enjoyed it. It looked super from the sidelines.

What are the benefits of a lottery system as opposed to "first come first served?"

Great Marathon atmosphere as per usual this year. Slower time an ankle injury.

The main image I have besides all the usual positivity is that of seeing someone throwing a bottle into the liffey. This after seeing the usual few bottles been thrown into the park on the way down. It's not on and in my opinion should result in that participant been removed from the race. /Rant

Is there any way of knowing how many dnf's there was. As in... We know how many finished but?
Rageing that it's gone to lottery. And not only that but we have to wait til January to find out. Building hype and disappointment all in one. Gutted

Smacks of trying to add prestige.

    Unnecessary imo.

I hear what you are saying with that as NY and London both over sell with that factored in.
However from the statement they released you could potentially have a registered club with no participation in a national marathon if it's actually a transparent ballot...
No doubt charities will be looked after first.

The using of a lottery system does create a bit of an extra buzz around the entries as if creates a false impression of their scarcity. Really not needed though after 1 year of selling out relatively quickly, but only really quickly in comparison to their own previous years and not actually a quick sell out in comparison to other events.

The number of people not turning up on the day is going to be a touch higher depending on how early the entries close or the possibility of transfers is closed. No mention of transfers being possible on that page that I can see, but if 5000 didn't turn up after there was the possibility of cancelling as late as April(?) then having the cancellation option deadline being in January, when you have to decide if you really want the place or not, isn't going to improve that stat.

They do get to sit on about half a million Euros in their bank account for a couple of months though which must bring in a few more Euros in interest. (€15x30k would be my guess, at most)

Other than the Gardai is there any group that gets a guaranteed block entry?

And when I say "block" in relation to the Gardai it is deliberate as I assume they still start on the front of wave 1 and get in everyones way? :D
