Wow, I'm convinced that no matter what they do people are going to bitch and moan and complain. The sense of entitlement on this thread is pretty staggering.

The reality is that there is a demand now that exceeds the supply of places and a lottery is the fairest way of distributing entries and is used in races all over the world.

They want to reduce the possibility of websites crashing causing people to miss an entry opportunity and I agree with the organisers that this is the fairest way of doing it. It won't suit everyone but it is the best system available to them.

The reality is that most people who enter the lottery will probably get a place.

A potential tweak would be to allow applicants to apply as a group of 2/3 or whatever and you either all get in or none. Probably more of a benefit to foreign applicants. I would mean if a group plans to do it together they can.

It should be doable and I’d imagine most Irish would apply individually anyway.

Does anyone have info on how many applicants there are for the 22,500 places available?

If there is 45,000 applicants it would give everyone a 50:50 chance under the lottery system... but 100,000 applicants drastically reduces the likelihood of securing a place?

Or only 25,000 applicants, meaning only 2,500 people will miss out?

I’d hazard a guess and say that many people are going to enter twice and it’ll cause more problems. I will certainly stick my name in the hat twice.
First name + surname and middle name + surname

A good point and you’re right. Sure I could get my brothers to apply and just get them to collect the bib and run in their name if I didn’t get in.

I would guess genuine applicants will be about 25-27,000 but with the fear of missing out there will be duplicates.

Did anyone who tried to apply in the first four weeks of 2019 opening miss out?

There is absolutely nothing wrong with trying to figure why they have actually done this. You can call it bitching and moaning if you want.

do you have to be a member of a club to register with athletics ireland?
i'd be pretty sure i'll have a GFA time when they release the times but i've never been in a club so where does that leave people like me?
you don't have to be a member of a club for GFA for london.

Think this needs a thread of it’s own. It’s certainly an interesting development that will spark plenty of debate!

I assume you just enter the lottery and hope for the best. I think the GFA entries are for club runners to enter the national championships.

I know a few people who entered this year who did not turn up. They have not even completed a 10k yet they still signed up to the marathon to say they '' ran a marathon''. They made the decision to sign up in the pub after coming into see friends after who ran last years DCM and wanted to be in on the buzz. Why dont they stop people entering who have not at least completed a half marathon in the last year or 2. So many of these people who dont show up just realistically will never run one and should not be taking peoples spots who are willing to train hard for the run.

Im not bothered about the Lottery just hope the National champs is not affected.

National champs won't be affected, as all the contenders will have the gfa time.

If you can't hit the GFA time, your not competing for the national champs anyhow.

If anything it will improve the standard and cause people to reach higher

So you want volunteers to spend more time examing if people did a half or not and then if they get wrong, they get abused here again?

I’d never done a 10km + before my first one in 2017... showed up and finished

But you probably didn't enter in November or December. I entered in 2017 but it was in July so had the immediate draw of the race series to motivate me.

There probably is no perfect solution but my hunch is that once again if you want to run it you'll get in (by hook or by crook). It's not like London getting over half a million applications.

It's nothing to do with a sense of entitlement, I feel its a lack of appreciation to the people who run the event year in year out. With this year's race there was nearly 6 weeks to enter before it sold out... weeks not days or hours, with fair warning when it was getting full. So please tell me what was wrong with that system?

There are team titles at stake too and its quite cimmon to score on a medal winning team without a gfa time.

Maybe they could use the €75k booking fee to pay someone to do it?

Maybe they could use the €75k booking fee to pay someone to do it?

Or maybe that money goes to something else already?

Just get over it and get use to it.

Or maybe that money goes to something else already?

Just get over it and get use to it.

Why get over it? When it's something that can be changed?

Anyone who really wants one will just register multiple times and then you'll have people on here and from the organizers talking about how they had 50,000 requests :rolleyes:

Also the lottery is taking away from any meaningful discussion on the increase in average pricing. But we should probably just get use to that.

Looks like my time got wiped out in one of the table refreshes.

Full race report available here.....not feeling too bad still but a mega wave of tiredness has hit me in the last hour or so.

There is already a thread dedicated to the lottery here https://touch.boards.ie/thread/post/111632536

Any chance we can keep this one on the topic of Sunday's event?

In fairness, there are no "cheap" big city marathons any more unless you get insanely lucky and get a ballot place for London.

€30 to run Athens. Plenty of cheap big city marathons.

London is £30 with a GFA place. Think the ballot places are more expensive.

Seville also insanely inexpensive if you book early enough. Think around €30 including a singlet & shorts.
