That’s why i’m running it in February!!

Beware when collecting your gear that it is ridiculously small. I ordered large and my kids can barely fit in to it. Its a fantastic marathon and a beautiful city.

Wow, I'm convinced that no matter what they do people are going to bitch and moan and complain. The sense of entitlement on this thread is pretty staggering.

The reality is that there is a demand now that exceeds the supply of places and a lottery is the fairest way of distributing entries and is used in races all over the world.

They want to reduce the possibility of websites crashing causing people to miss an entry opportunity and I agree with the organisers that this is the fairest way of doing it. It won't suit everyone but it is the best system available to them.

The reality is that most people who enter the lottery will probably get a place.

For a Moderator that is a remarkably sanctimonious outburst. The success of this forum is due to the differing views of the many.

Last Sunday was my 13th DCM in a row, the idea of doing it every year keeps me running and I would not like to lose that. I don't see how they cant make an effort to accommodate regular participants. They managed to process paper application forms with cheques and drafts for long enough, surely it is not too difficult to spend a few moments scrutinising individual applications from people who have been loyal supporters of the event to ensure regular runners do not have to go abroad to do their annual big city autumn marathon.

I agree but playing devils advocate, why should someone who has done it X times in a row be more deserving than a first timer?

Why are DCM promoting the 13 people that have done the 40 DCM's so far?

Not a dream. Watched the video for hours yesterday and you can see him approaching the finish having a great time saying hi to all.

Surely there was a major demand for this year’s marathon simply because it was the 40th edition. I’d imagine the numbers would naturally drop anyway for next year.

Really? Who would run a marathon because it’s the 40th? Not a huge amount I would imagine?

It is the reason I did it. Wanted the 40th medal.

People said there was a huge upsurge of interest in 2016 due to it being the centenary of the Easter Rising. There may have been, it was the first to ever sell out, but they sold an extra 5,000 entries this year and sold out about 8 months quicker. Last year also sold large numbers and there was no real milestone.

The move to the Sunday created greater demand too from here and overseas as not everyone had the Bank Holiday.

Yes, they've all been on a Sunday since 2016. There has been an upsurge in numbers and rate of uptake even since the move to Sunday. The move to Sunday was definitely a huge catalyst on an increase since 2015 though.

They sold 5000 extra places but only saw a extra 1000 on the start line conspired to 2016. But I do think there was run to improve the first come, first in system.

Some kind of confirmation / transfer system during the summer would have probably gone a long way. Dublin had a over 90% attendance rate back then. Now its down in the 70s.

The big worry is the lottery system opens the door the scalpers and nasty 3rd party tour providers that will gladly sell you a bib for a few hundred.

Given the money grubbing that goes on at GAA and the FAI I wouldn't be shocked if thats part of the plan for the DCM and Athletics Ireland.

I know a few people who ran it purely because it was the 40th DCM.
My husband being one of them. He had just finished celebrating his 40th birthday and decided - f3ck it I'm 40, DCM is 40 - why not spend my 40th year training for a marathon. He had just completed a target of doing a half marathon before his 40th birthday so it was the next stepping stone for him. I know by him it won't be his last marathon either...

    F3ck it, I'm 41. DCM is 41
    F3ck it, I'm 42. DCM is 42.

I see a pattern emerging here.

Is there a link this year to view finisher pics full size still with watermark ect? Not sure I can part with €50 atm from the small ones on the site

They seem to have got smart with this only putting the previews in a small size so you can't use them unless you buy.

They are very expensive. Charge €20 or €30 for the full pack and you would double the purchases.

What does me moderating a different forum have to do with anything?

The unfortunate reality is that there are more people wanting to run the race than there are places available so a lottery is the best option available.

As i said above no matter what they do people are going to moan and complain so they can't win no matter what they do.

Why is a lottery the best way to solve the problem of demand being more than supply?

Because it gives people an equal chance of getting an entry and that it is why it is used on high demand races all over the world.

But this doesn't hold water. DCM took a month to sell out last year so everybody already had a perfectly equal chance to get an entry, just sign up and pay for it.

Not to mention that it doesn't address the point anyway. If the problem is that demand is greater than supply then a lottery does not fix that problem.

Still happily married and my wife has her first marathon done.
Things went very well (probably too well) up till around 30K (4-5 min comfort break for her then, I think she was actually just hiding in the portoloo) meant the 5:30 estimate time slipped by. Few bits of walking for a min or two in the last 10-12K but the show stayed on the road but her stomach was at her. She was kinda stunned coming from the canal that it was going to be over soon. Says she'd do another one.....
For my own case it was a bit of an odd experience, physically fine barring stiff hips. It was like doing a parkrun at the back as you've a much difference experience and runner alongside you than you are used too. Saw some pretty fast walkers including one proper race walker we passed in Chapelizod. I did think around 2 hours in crikey this is going to be a long day and again around 4hrs 30mins (we were at 35K) and knew it would be another hour. But it was great to be able to be there for her encouraging and helping her work through it. A good day and one to remember.

It does hold water. Sorry if it doesn't suit you but it is the fairest way of doing it. There is a reason so many major races use this sort of a system.

The demand has been going up year on year and there is a fair expectation that it will continue that way.

If you think that it won't sell out in the month allocated then it should be no problem as everyone that enter's the lottery will get a place.

In reality though they will receive more entries than they can satisfy so this is really the only way forward.

Enjoyed that!! Started with the 3:20 Pacers but went a bit ahead after I started getting some abuse from them about my running form or something, the cheek!!!!
They were good craic though, bang on and getting crowds going.

I did fade a bit towards the end though. Partly because of poor training and maybe the fact I knew I'd get in under 3:20 I eased off a bit too.

Getting to baggage was a bit of a pain as noted earlier but everything else was sound. Nice to get a shout out from Anto at pacers area. I always go over that way to say hello but it was quiet busy around that time so I left them be.

Quick hello to a few in mcgrattans. Denis and gang, Fbot, Brian and Aisling to name but a few..

    A good day......

It does hold water. Sorry if it doesn't suit you

Its irrelevant if it suits me or not and I never said it did or didn't. But following on from your "bitching and moaning" comment earlier I think its clear what sort of discussion you are after.

Not sure what you mean by that seems a strange comment.

I'd like a reasoned discussion but from some of the comments on here and on the the other thread I get the impression people only want what suits themselves rather than what is fairest or what will work best for future years and would prefer to shout out ridiculous accusations.
