The 3:20 bus is filling up nicely

Are you guys planning on going with the pacers?

My loose plan is to stay with the group until halfway and then re-assess (it'll either be a case of hanging on, or pushing on a bit if things are going well)

Pretty sure I'll be with them hanging on for dear lifeðŸ˜ðŸ˜

    Wont be going with Pacers.
Ran a negative split last year and i was happy the way it worked out.
That said, my goal this year is a 17 min improvement so i will need everything to go right.
Felt really strong over the last few miles.
Have made a paceband but my main aim is to run them first 12k conservatively somewhere in and around a 4:55/km pace.
I have a plan so will have no excuses when it goes pear shaped!!

Planning to hang back from the pacers at the start, fall back a bit on the drags and reel them in slowly, first back in PP down to Chapelizod and then hopefully after 14 miles. That's if I have enough left after 14 miles of course!

What are the big hills / drags to look out for?

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,663 ✭✭✭rovers_runner

I see they have peoples waves in the tracker site now:
    https://track.rtrt.me/e/TDL-DUBLINM-2019

There are a handful of people I'd know who I've looked up who should know better, I see a lot of people in Wave 2 (slowest pacer being 3:50) who would have not previous form better than 4:20 for instance.

I think Wave 3 will turn out more accurate in terms of people knowing where they should be, Wave 2 will have more people over 4hrs than under it I predict.

bit of a climb up through stoneybatter.
decent drag up chesterfield avenue to myos pub in castleknock, pretty deceptive and very easy to get carried away on fresh legs.
another hill just after you cross the bridge at chapelizod and then there's a good gradual climb from dolphins barn bridge up to walkinstown.
there's more in the 2nd half of the race but they always fade from my memory

    Cheers.
    Will do.
I know in my heart and soul that i am really pushing the boat out with the sub 3:20 but i finished last year with a nice bit left in the tank.
I will probably park the Marathons for a bit after this year, as there are other types of running i want to explore over the next year or two.
Hence the reason i want to give it a good lash and cross the line having given it my all.
    Best of luck to you.
There is no surer bet than you getting your target this year anyway.
I know how dissapointed you were last year.
Im sure you will be dansing a jig on the table in Mcgrattans to make up for last year anyway!!

Haha, speaking of sure bets, one of them will definitely be me NOT dancing on tables in McGrattans..... :D

I think they have mixed around some people if their predicted time was on the boundary between zones. I had put down 4:30 on my entry but was put into wave 3 rather than wave 4.

Am I to presume that the 1st wave bag drop won't actually close at that time and that it's just an effort to spread out the timings of people dropping bags off?

    What to do during taper.................

The first climb can is pretty steep and can ruin you later on if you go too fast.
As ooter said, Chesterfield will feel pretty flat, but it's not.
Don't assume it's downhill once you reach Myos (support here is amazing), there's another short drag just to p*ss you off.
Easy to get carried away on the downhill sections, miles 8, 9, 10. Don't try to make up all the time in this section that you lost (by sticking to your plan) in the first 7 miles.
Take it very easy up the hill at the end of St Laurence Rd. You're only losing about 6 seconds even dropping the pace by a minute/mile. You've a nice gentle section for the next 1.5 miles to Kilmainham.
Take it easy again up Crumlin Rd. Mile 14 has most of this drag. It's long and straight, just get the head down, don't look up, and get through it.
Once you turn left onto Cromwellsfort Rd (end of mile 15) there's a nice 5-6 mile section to make up a bit of time.
Clonskeagh Rd and "Heartbreak Hill" only seem bad because they're so late in the race. Clonskeagh Rd itself kind of climbs in 3 steps with the 2nd being the longest. I run this road a lot and it's best just to focus on finishing each mini-drag.
Heartbreak Hill at the end of Roebuck Rd is short and honestly not as bad as people make out. The crowds here will help. Recover from that as you run down Fosters Ave to prepare for the final 5K push.
The ramp up to the flyover at UCD is NOT a hill, it's flat. No matter what you think it looks like on Sunday after 23 miles, it's flat. Keep telling yourself that.
The final 2 miles after turning left onto Merrion Rd can seem longer as it's pretty straight. Run close to the crowds here, not in the middle of the road. Their encouragement will help.

I think they do. Just a poster like. Use to like the big green mile markers they had for the half. I see SSE took them back.

Markers will be at each mile on the Route and every 5KM will also be marked.
