Trump is in fact delivering for his base. Multiple bases.

The religious right get his Israel policy and conservative justices.
    Economic right get tax cuts.
Anti immigration right get the wall.
Populists and anti globalist right get the tariffs.

I don’t tgink he will lose many Republicans. War republicans maybe.

Trump really does have a weird world view:
“Dealing with the European Union is very difficult; they drive a high bargain,” Trump told reporters at the White House on Tuesday. “We have all the cards in this country because all we have to do is tax their cars and they’d give us anything we wanted because they send millions of Mercedes over. They send millions of BMWs over.”
    https://www.cnbc.com/2019/08/20/trump-says-europe-will-give-in-all-we-have-to-do-is-tax-their-cars.html

It's probably just another example of what he thinks is a winning bargaining tactic - threaten massively and hope for fearful capitulation. If not, he wants a trade war. Good luck with that.

Does he not know that many, many Mercedes are proudly made by rednecks in Alabama?

The EU drive a hard bargain but the US has all the cards? I'm not a poker player but if you have all the cards the other players have nothing to bargain with.

Perhaps this misunderstanding is why his casinos ended up going bankrupt!

Doesn't BMW have massive manufacturing plants in the U.S.?

I think it's more about validating and pandering to their feelings than constructing an actual, tangible wall. Otherwise, his base would have shrunk by now.

We sat again for an hour and a half discussing maps and figures and always getting back to that most damnable creation of the perverted ingenuity of man - the County of Tyrone.

Yes, in Spartanburg County, South Carolina. It‘s the biggest employer there.

I guess „build a barrier“ wouldn’t have been as catchy as „build a wall“ - although more accurate...

  • Registered Users Posts: 19,384 ✭✭✭✭everlast75

Yeah - I'm discounting anything coming from the White House twitter account on the grounds that it is not a verifiable source.

In relation to the former, is that "new" wall, or a replacement to the existing wall? And did Mexico get a receipt, as they were to pay for it?

I know it would be unfair to ask you to comment on the latest tweets from the president, thanking the analogy that he is like the King of Israel, or that he wanted to buy Greenland as it would only place you in an embarrassing position, and so I won't.

Hold on, going by what border patrol said, they managed to get in, they were trying to get back to Mexico. So somehow this magical fortress of a wall manages to let the illegal immigrants in but prevents them from getting back out, adding to the cost of arresting them, detaining them, feeding them, processing them and then most likely after spending all that money, then sending them back.

Because I thought the whole point was to keep them out.

Trump administration are proposing to keep children indefinitely in camps, and not innoculate them for the incoming flu season

if it walks like a duck, and talks like a duck, it's definitely a concentration camp

Well it’s started. That’s all that matters to the base. Presumably the democratic candidate will run on stopping it.

it said they were unable to scale a barrier. So the fled back

There’s a fair amount of group think in here. I’d impeach him for numerous reasons but on whether he gets re-elected or not I’d say he has a chance.

Not to be pedantic but that's a fence and at best it's replacing something that was already there as the California/Mexico 141 mile border was completed during Bush Jr presidency.

Obama built 130 miles of fence along the border in his first term. Pretty sure Trump's most hardcore supporters weren't expecting to just continue what Obama had been doing..

No not a fence, never a fence.

A wall with 'see through visibility'

What kind of clowns still fall for this rubbish? You're allowed be right wing, conservative, and anti-immigrant without swallowing and regurgitating this crap. Shame.

So how's the wall coming along? I mean the wall along the Mexican border that Trump promised would be paid by Mexico, in case you might be mixing it up with another wall.

I've strapped myself in, eagerly awaiting your reply.

Nope. The link you posted concerns a portion of the wall in New Mexico.

The tweets I posted concerned California.

As Trump said, doesn't matter what it's called, nor what it's made of, that's all immaterial. All that matters is that a barrier is put in place which achieves the objective: to reduce illegal attempts at crossing the border.

As for the sections of the border which will be replacing some previous fencing, Border Patrol Commissioner Mark Morgan says the old one was 'dilapidated and outdated':

    1. That’s a fence.

    2. There was already a fence on this section of the border. I’ve driven parallel to it.

Trump: I will build a wall along our southern border. A big beautiful wall and Mexico will pay for it.

Reality: some fences are replaced after shutting down the government, caving on the shutdown, declaring a national emergency and directing funds that should have been used elsewhere.

Outlaw Pete: you have to hand it to Trump, he really delivered on that wall promise.

The Cali / Mexico border has had a wall / fence for nearly 20 years now so I don’t think that really counts as building the wall. Did he ever get funding for it? It’s irrelevant anyway, even if he were to get re-elected the wall will never be built.

Well if he couldn't manage it with control of the House, Senate and White House, what chance has he got now?

He really is appallingly incompetent at anything he tries.

How anyone admires him is totally beyond me.

Trump is still losing votes daily by the thousand. This week he has hit LGBT votes, with the resignation of the Head of the Republican LGBT group.
Trump accusing Jewish Democrat voters of being ignorant or disloyal, will lose him massive support from the US Jewish population, two thirds of which vote Democrat.
His daily lies and ritual abuse of the four newcomer Democrat Reps women of colour will draw out ethnic minority previous abstainers in their thousands.

Every day I hear Trump may win the 2020 election, but I cannot see it. He won the last election by less than 75,000 votes against an opponent he demonised for a year.

I cannot see a Trump victory this time. He will be voted out by a landslide.

The economy tanking in Q2 of 2020 won't make much difference. He will still be voted out by a landslide.

I am hoping it will be Sanders/Warren/Buttigieg for the primary. Trump will not debate any of these three, he is not THAT stupid.

If it is Biden, he will debate and he may win. Biden needs to be removed as soon as possible. Biden is the only threat of a second Trump term.
