Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Failed NCT due to emissions

My car was put through the NCT today and it failed due to emissions

    Low idle CO 0.19vol% PASS
    HC 17 ppm N/A

High idle lambda: 0.99 - PASS
    CO 0.53vol% - MAJOR (limit is 0.2%)
    HC 20ppm - PASS

The mechanic I talked to said that they would start with the catalytic converter but other people I have talked to have said that it could be something completely different that wouldn't be as much as a catalytic converter replacement. Just thought it was a bit extreme to jump straight to the catalytic converter.

    Any thoughts?

Car is an 05 VW Polo 1.2L.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Get a compression test done first.

More often than not the valves are damaged and it would have low compression in one or two cylinders.

If there is an underlying problem, diptane will not fix it.

No expert on emissions but the figures you've provided suggest the air-fuel ratio is fine (slightly rich) and you may need a new catalytic converter (carbon monoxide isn't getting oxidized sufficiently). Still, a fault code reader would be handy to check some sensors for the sake of it.
