My next pick is an incredibly talented and hard working player, with over 300 league appearances for 3 different clubs. Leeds, Coventry and Liverpool In that time he got 49 goals and 47 assists. A player I always enjoyed watching and one of those players I would have loved if played for the club I support.
Described by Gerard Houllier as his "most inspirational signing" he played a key role in Liverpool's 3 cup winning season in 2001.

I'm going to sacrifice longevity for this pick as the more established options have all been snapped up, but I'm still pretty happy to choose this man to hold down my midfield and give Scholes the freedom he needs to pull the strings and get into some scoring positions.

A bit of a slow starter in his debut Premier League season, it was a few months before he even started a game, but my god what a player he was once he did win his place in the strongest Liverpool team of the Premier League era. He became one of the vital cogs in the machine that went on to amass 97 points,

I'll get into why I chose him from a tactical perspective once my team is complete, but for now....

    Welcome to the team, Fabinho.

Picking a player to play alongside Fernadinho in Midfield here and having this player here with him will become an effective shield for my defence while also having the ability to move the ball on quickly to my attack. He was great on the ball and also had the ability to score.

He was one of my favourite opposition players in the 90's Captained Chelsea to 2 FA Cups in a time before Abromovich

Time to beef up my defence. This guy has been a great defender for over a decade with 2 league titles, 2 FA cups, a league cup, a champion league and 2 Europa Leagues. He's also appeared in the PFA team of the year 3 times and formed a great partnership with Terry during that period. He was a lot quicker than people thought which was often needed when Terry was getting older. Always preformed well for England as well winning over 60 caps.

So I think my side needs that little bit of class from a creative point in midfield so I am going to draft the fastest ever player to record 50 assists in PL.

6th on the all time list for chances created as well.

    Welcome Mesut Ozil.

A man who undoubtedly, when you put a decent finisher in front of him will supply the assists.

One of the most consistent and reliable defenders of modern Premier League era. Averaging over 30 league games a season for Arsenal in 7 seasons, a leader on the field and a pro off of it. He's appeared in the PFA team of the season twice and if you have this guy at right back you simply do not worry about that side of your defence. My 7th pick is a silent warrior.

Not much of a write up as i am out and about: A rock solid defender, great at reading the game and a leader in defense :

    Toby Alderweireld

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,952 ✭✭✭Morzadec

The centre back I wanted this round so glad he made it through to me with several others being chosen ahead of him.

For me of all centre-backs to have played for most of this decade, this guy has been the best and most consistent.

He's been in 2 PFA teams of the season ('13, '18) and was in the Champions League Squad of the Season last year.

An ever-present in a Spurs side who have gone from a second tier team to challenging for league titles and Champions Leagues.

Important for my side to have a left-footed centre-back that is comfortable on the ball. Also has decent recovery pace for a centre back.

114 caps for Belgium's best ever team that is littered with stars shows you the company he is used to keeping.

My next pick is Jan Vertonghen

Ok so my team in my opinion is stacked full of players that were dependable and consistent and got results and were all leaders on the pitch and they dont get anymore dependable then my next pick.

He Made the first ever pfa premierleague team of the year after helping Leeds to the first division title the year before and continued to play at the highest level for the next 14 or so years scoring goals and assists from left midfield and later Central midfield with Leeds, Everton, Newcastle and bolton.

As elegant a footballer as you'd want to see.
Arsenal's Player of the Season in his first season at the club.
As assist machine, with an eye for goal, he will gel with Mascherano and Dembele perfectly IMO. i love that midfield 3.
He is also underrated defensively. i still remember a standout performance from him away to City under Wenger when Arsenal beat them at the Etihad.

    The smiling assassin.

    Santi Cazorla

And now for someone, who I believe, is a forgotten man.

whether it's because he played for a Chelsea team who were close, but never quite got to the level of Utd and Arsenal in the 90s, or whether he just wasn't that fashionable, I don't know. but he was utterly class.

went to Sheffield Wednesday after being one of the many standout Romanians at the 1994 World Cup, spent a year there, and was quickly snapped up by Chelsea.

he was prominent as they became cup specialists (winning the FA Cup, League Cup and Cup Winners Cup), perennial contenders near the top end of the table, and frequently taking massive scalps, including one notable 5-0 win over Manchester Utd.

he would thrive in the modern game.

Ok next up for me is my keeper and they don't come much bigger and more consistent then one of the finest keepers ever and to provide a natural link to my center back

    Im going for David Seaman

Im out now so that's all I have to say on matter :p

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,952 ✭✭✭Morzadec

Had planned to leave this position until later but can't keep passing up the value to get what is, for me, the second best player in his position in the draft - many even consider him the best.

Holds a record that I wouldn't be surprised to never see beaten in my lifetime - just 15 goals conceded in the 04/05 season, keeping 21 clean sheets. The next season just 22 goals conceded. Was voted the best goalkeeper in the world by International Federation of Football History & Statistics in 2005.

Incredibly consistent and dependable during this peak, I don't recall him ever putting a foot wrong. No real weaknesses in any part of his goalkeeping game, he was described by Gigi Buffon as "the best overall goalkeeper" of his era.

Even after going to Arsenal not at his peak he still managed to win a Golden Glove in 2016 (his 4th win of this award - no goalkeeper has won this more).

A great leader, winner and mentally strong player to boot. My centre-backs will feel very confident with Petr Cech playing behind them

A great left back but a Liverpool player,so more than likely a horrible human being :pac::pac::pac:

Always up and down the wing on the overlap, once broke a lads leg with a shot......reknowned more for absolute thunderb*stard goals :

    John Arne Riise

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,134 ✭✭✭correction

My next pick is who I believe to be among the most underrated defenders of his era. Extremely quick, excellent on the ball, a great reader of the game and one of the best one on one defenders the league has seen. Arriving at Arsenal for only 9 million in the summer of 2010 he has gone on to one of if not the best signing the club has made this decade making over 250 league appearances and cementing his place as the cubs best centre back since Sol Campbell. Do not allow Arsenal's poor defensive record over the years cloud your judgment on this man who often kept Arsenal in games with his ability to play in such an unorganized defence. My 8th pick is

    Laurent-Koscielny-Arsenal.jpg

    Laurent Koscielny

So next up I think I want to add a base to my midfield. A player who was key to two title winning teams under Jose and Conte. Another case like Sanchez where he hasn't been as good recently but at his best he was one of the best in the league.

    My midfield base Nemanja Matić

Finally getting my striker pick in and very happy this guy was still available as most the rest of the top strikers left wouldn't suit my system. This guy has fantastic pace, great finisher, hard working and had a great relationship with my RW. He was another former player of the year and has had a renewed surge in form recently.

Welcome Jamie "havin a party" Vardy

This pick will add some width and trickery to my attack and with his and Coles pace should complement my 2 playmakers.

PFA player of the Year for 2000

It’s time to add a partner for Michael Owen up front now, and this man I believe would complete a really dangerous “pace and power” type of duo for me.

He’s already got 132 Premier League goals at the age of just 26, and that’s from him playing in teams where the service has often been less than world class. He’s got consistency too, never falling below a 10 goal season in the league and once netting 25 times in a campaign for Everton, he made the PFA Team of the Year in that season as well.

Stylistically, I think he’s a great fit for what I’m trying to do with my team and he gives an added dimension up front. Leighton Baines will once again be able to provide him with quality service as he did a few years ago for Everton, so I’m very happy to welcome (the 2016/17 version of ;))......

My next pick is a right back with over 350 Premier League appearances. A player on his day was as good as any full back in the league. Perhaps a bit unfortunate with injuries over the course of his career but still a player I’d happily have in my team.

    Stephen Carr

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,026 ✭✭✭duffman13

Consistently one of the top full backs in the last 10 years in the premier league only for injury two seasons ago may have gotten a move to a bigger club. Named in the PFA team of they year in 2014 and Evertons player of the year in 2014, Seamus Coleman is my next pick. An extremely good defender who gets on the overlap and pops up with a goal or two. 20 goals in his time at Everton and a decent record of assists. And who could forget the famous nations league triumph for Ireland :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,597 ✭✭✭Ferris_Bueller

    Mikel Arteta

Slots into my midfield perfectly with Kante and Gerrard. Had a great career spending over 10 seasons in the league between Everton and Arsenal, he was a crisp passer of the ball and could dictate the tempo of a game. Also was a goal threat in his time with Everton and notched up a lot of assists, he won their player of the season in back to back seasons.

Gerrard played his best stuff with Alonso and Mascherano in midfield. I think in Kante and Arteta I have two similar players and a midfield trio who each have a different skill set but should work well together.

Going to choose my partner for Jaap Stam in the centre of defence and I think this man is very good value at this stage.

After impressing at Blackburn, he signed for Liverpool and went on to form a partnership with Sami Hyppia that is still fondly remembered twenty years on. While there he won an FA Cup, two League Cups, a UEFA Cup and Super Cup.

    He is...

    Stephane-Henchoz-863919.jpg

    ...Stephane Henchoz.

A very good tackler, read the game well and never lacked courage. Here's what Phil Thompson said about him: "If there's a block to be made in the area and you see a red shirt flying in to prevent a goal, you can be fairly sure it will have a no 2 (Henchoz's number) on the back of it. Head, foot, whatever it takes to prevent a goal."

I think, as with Hyppia, he and Stam would complement each other well.

    OGC Nice (Guys)

    Pick #1: Frank Lampard
    Pick #2: Jaap Stam
    Pick #3: Ruud Van Nistelrooy
    Pick #4: Dietmar Hamann
    Pick #5: Arjen Robben
    Pick #6: Damien Duff
    Pick #7: Darren Fletcher
    Pick #8: Stephane Henchoz

    Idrissa Gana Gueye

For me the best defensive midfielder behind Kante in the league the past few years. Constantly around the top in tackle stats.
Him and Keane should free up my attacking players to do the business.

A moneyball kind of pick if you will.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,369 ✭✭✭✭Liam O

Quite surprised Lucas didn't take this man if he was looking for a Keane partner. Surprised he fell this far but as a ball winning midfielder there were few better than him in the 90s and into the mid 2000s. Wasn't always first choice but showed in the season that Keane was injured that he was a more than capable deputy, picking up PL team of the year honours. Underrated technique and terrific engine. A 6 time PL winner and great value at this time to partner Alonso is Nicky Butt.

Aaron Ramsey is my next pick.

He gives my nice balance in midfield alongside Yaya. Can play box to box or attacking midfield. Good assist and goal scoring record from midfield. Was phenomenal for arsenal from 2013 - 2015 and again was probably their best play the season before last before his contract situation impacted on gametime.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,750 ✭✭✭redzerdrog

    Lucas Radebe

A Leeds utd legend and the perfect fit for my team. Quick, strong and excellent on the ball. Brings quality and incredible leadership ability.
I had identified him early on as a perfect partner for Kompany and delighted to get a proper player like him so late in the draft

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,369 ✭✭✭✭Liam O

Radebe was on my list but it's one of his teammates I'm going to go for. When he could keep himself free of injury there weren't many better than him at CB. Fine footballer which means he'll fit perfectly into my team built on technique and everyone being comfortable on the ball. Leader and terrific defender is Jonathan Woodgate.

2 time premier league champion ,3 times in the PFA team of the year.

Should link up well with Bernardo.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,630 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

Going to choose my RB now and I'm pleasantly surprised this player has reached me.

He had several successful seasons at Fulham, making the PFA Team of the Season in 01-02 and being named his club's Player of the Year. This prompted Liverpool to sign him where he went on to help them win a Champions League, FA Cup and Super Cup. He also amassed over 50 caps for Ireland.

    Pleased to welcome...

    finn

    ...Steve Finnan.

Always found him a very reliable performer. Got forward well, good with both feet, solid in defence. He should be a very useful addition to my team.

    Graeme Le Saux

Premier league winner, two time team of the season. Defensively a very solid left back, an area where we are not spoiled for choice.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,026 ✭✭✭duffman13

Another full back and another one who adds goals to my team. There is probably no player who's rise and fall is matched by his team. He owned the LB slot of the Leeds team who reached the uefa cup and champions league semi finals in the early 00s. He had an eye for goal from distance and an excellent dead ball expert. 28 goals for a full back is impressive and voted in PFA Team of the year, my next pick is Ian Harte

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,109 ✭✭✭KBurke85

My next pick completes my defence. A player with over 170 appearances in the league for Liverpool over an 8 year spell. A good defender who could pop up with the odd spectacular goal. It’s good to be able to pair him with Hyypiä in my team.

    My pick is Daniel Agger

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,494 ✭✭✭✭martyos121

Time for me to pay attention to the right flank, and I'm going to go for a player who can do the work of two men and also add a goal threat. Consistency was a huge strength of his and you couldn't pick out too many poor performances, he always gave everything on the pitch and for that reason, I'm picking the absolute workhorse that is....

    Dirk Kuyt

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,591 ✭✭✭✭Trigger

There is not many Left Fulls left especially of this mans Calibre, although he was with United for 2 seasons his style of play had the fans on the edge of their seat so much that he was the clubs player of the year in his first season. He could attack and defend with ease.
His time at United won't be viewed nicely in the eyes of many fans due to him trying to push a move through to Liverpool.

My next pick finishes out my midfield and is a fantastic midfielder who won back to back young player of the year awards while also making the team of the year on both occasions in his first 2 seasons in the league after stepping up from league One. A constant goal threat arriving from midfield and hard working without the ball he'll add great balance to my midfield I feel.

So I haven't touched my defence since round 3 so I think I need to add a right back, as that position is fast losing quality as the rounds go so I can't wait any longer.

No career right back has more assists than him left in this draft.

A great defender who also possessed the pace and drive to push forward down the right flank.

An almost ever present for Leeds throughtout their premier league years.

Absolutely thrilled to be pulling this guy late in round 9. A stalwart premier league left back. My next pick is about as reliable as they come, clocking a total of 352 appearances in his 11 seasons in the Premier League. A member of the famous Arsenal back 4 of the nineties renowned for their defensive solidity. I give you

    Gareth Barry

Like many this round was also planning on a left back. Some good players on my shortlist taken, but very glad that the guy top of my list survived til now as I was very close to picking him last round.

Pace and stamina in the full back role is going to very important to my set up, and Gael Clichy has these in abundance.

Won 3 Premier Leagues with 2 different clubs. Deputy to Cole during the Invincibles season, he played 12 league matches that year so more than a bit part role. In the PFA team of the year in 07-08 while at Arsenal where he was top class and filled the void left by Ashley Cole. Moved to City where he continued to be one of the leagues best left-backs, winning two league titles.

Will compliment his old team mate Lauren perfectly, with both of them providing the main width and pace in my team, able to get up and down the pitch to contribute in all areas on their side of the park.

A left back who is exceptional at defending, very good crosser of the ball and has 18 goals on 120 games for Chelsea and also another Premier league winner in my team.

My left back pick is Marcos Alonso

As talented a footballer as England has ever produced.
    West Ham prodigy.
    Chelsea legend.
    Multiple Premier Leagues.
    Multiple FA Cups.
Integral to one of the best Chelsea teams there has ever been.
Chelsea's POTY in 2008 (think of those he had to beat to that!)
Skill. Trickery. Vision. Goals. Work rate.

Not a conventional right winger, but with my midfield 3's workrate and ability on the ball, and Petrescu providing his share of the width, he'll be in his element.

    Joe Cole.

I need a proper tenacious ball winner in the middle of the park, someone who can get all over the pitch, and help Carrick as the main pivot to cover my attacking full-backs.

This man might be a bit forgotten about as it's been a while, but he was perhaps the most vital player in an excellent Leeds team that was knocking on the door of the both the Premier League and Champions League. He was their record signing, £7.2m in 2000 which was still quite a lot of money back then. Played for Everton for a season before that which I admit i'd forgotten about.

For those who can't quite remember him, he was somewhat in the mould of Roy Keane - tough tackling and always playing right on the edge, but not purely a destructive defensive midfielder, someone who could play good football too, and drive the ball forward with strong runs - he had both steel and class.

Went on to have a very successful career in Serie A after, playing with Roma and Inter and winning a few scudettos.

Olivier Dacourt joins Carrick and Silva in my midfield which I think has a nice balance to it.

Here he is causing Simeone and Nesta a few problems!

Finalising my defence is a player who wasnt afraid to get stuck in, Gary Neville described him as tenacious, aggressive, decent on the ball and his perfect replacement at Man Utd,shortlisted for the PFA young player of the year in his debut season, his overlapping and ability to get up and down the wing suits my team perfectly....im still p*ssed he was sold

With my 9th pick I managed to grab a member of the famous Arsenal back 4 of the nineties. With my 10th I'm grabbing another. This guy was a tall, commanding centre back. A league and multiple FA Cup winner. For me he has been forgotten in this draft. He did the hard grafting while Tony Adams got the plaudits. My 10th pick is

Gonna pick up my goalkeeper here

Crystal Palace fans voted him as their greatest ever keeper in a Centenary XI in 2005.

Leeds fans, similarly, voted him into a Leeds United’s Greatest Team.

Despite being in his very late 30s when at Everton, fans still regard him as having salvaged their 2004/05 season.

PFA team of the season while at Leeds for 1997-98, 1998–99 and 1999–2000 seasons. Considering Peter Schmeichel was winning titles and trebles in this time period it's some achievement and shows the quality of the man.

He had 5 appearances in PFA team of the seasons overall.

    Welcome Nigel Martyn

Not many quality RB left and this guy looks to be on the way to becoming a great. In the team of the year last year and an assist machine with pace to burn and a threat with freekicks as well. Only 2 years experience but has shown enough to earn the RB slot in my team

There definitely isnt an abundance of class left at Goalkeeper so I am going to go for a modern player instead of one longer serving players as I think he is a better goalkeeper in all aspects of his game than what is left. He is a fantastic shotstopper and has good command of his Area. He can also pick a pass. Two time PL winner and team of the year for 2017/18
