    Hi folks,

Does there exist a device where you don't store any data locally? Maybe to take it a step further, you don't even store the applications locally and do the processing locally? I'm just thinking it would be good in terms of data security, being able to access your stuff (anywhere where there's broadband anyway), getting the benefit of software and hardware advancements automatically. I know that some software as a service apps do this but I'm thinking of your whole laptop being like this. If it doesn't exist or it isn't widespread now, maybe when 5G gets going?

In the old days, this was called a thin client.

    Linux live cd.. Maybe Tails..
Then use Nextcloud or even a Synology for storing the data, accessible via a web browser.

    It's a Chromebook you're thinking of.
A Chromebook is a laptop or tablet running the Linux-based Chrome OS as its operating system.
The devices are primarily used to perform a variety of tasks using the Google Chrome browser, with
most applications and data residing in the cloud rather than on the machine itself.

So simple to set up and very very secure. If your users only need to access Office 365 or SharePoint these are perfect for the job. Configure them for Guest browsing only and you have the ideal Cloud machine that is ideal for GDPR sensitive deployments.

There's also Windows laptops which use eMMC storage instead of a HDD or SSD. Onboard storage is typically 32GB so you have to store your data and programs in the cloud.

Example: HP laptop with 2GB RAM and 32GB eMMC storage for €170 which includes a 12 month subscription to 1TB cloud storage .....
