I note today on the Irish Rail journey planner:
    Ticket Vending Machines Unavailable
Customers who have booked online are advised that there are no facilities to collect their tickets at Carrick on Suir, Clonmel, Cahir and Tipperary. Customers can print their ticket when changing at Limerick Junction, Waterford Plunkett or at their destination.

So it appears that they do make provision for travelling without a physical ticket where it is not possible to collect one at the boarding station. I'm not sure if there just are no machines at these stations or are they broken. It might be useable in making a case for out of service validators...
