I've an oldish PC that I've just set up with a Samsung monitor.

all's working well until it's left alone and the screen goes to sleep. then I'm left with a black screen with a blue and white box bouncing around it, which says
    Not Optimum Mode
    Recommended Mode:
    1280 x 1024 60Hz

then it has a question mark in a yellow box.

At this point it won't let me do anything, so have had to force shut down

can someone explain how to sort it please.

    What model is your monitor?
    1280 X 1024 is a terrible resolution....

Do you know what type of cable is connecting the monitor to the computer?

Hmmm it looks like that monitor does indeed only support 1280 x 1024
    You can see it here

Have you tried setting your screen resolution to match that?
What operating system are you using?

Yes tried that, using Windows 10.

Can you check your advanced display settings to see what you have set?
for example I have the following:
    resolution.png

Might be able to see if there is a mismatch somewhere

Instead, try to disconnect / connect cable - see if it recognizes monitor.

    As per link above
    • Native Resolution
      1280 x 1024 at 75 Hz
try List All Modes and see if available(image below for illustration purpose only)
That thing is from ~2004 - time to upgrade :D

It's not letting me do anything at the minute.

    I'll check it again tomorrow.

Am I right in assuming that it's looking like I need to replace the monitor?

The monitor probably doesn't HAVE to be replaced, but it's operating on legacy hardware and newer ones are less likely to complain about this sort of thing.

While officially windows will support these resolutions, you'll probably see issues for anything that doesn't have a minimum standard HD resolution of 1920 x 1080

Try Windows Key + P a few times when it goes to sleep.

thanks everyone, it seems to be temperamental to say the least.
think I'm going to replace it as it's for my mum and it will be less hassle I think.

anything I need to know / stay away from.

don't need anything too fancy, cheaper the better.
