Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Nice looking 1.8t A4 avant with NCT all the way til September 2021, €1650

Looks very clean in the pictures. Always a great bangernomics choice

Are the panel gaps on the drivers door OK?

    Looks a bit wrong.

About five or six years ago a brother of mine went to look at a 03 Almera for a friend who needed a runaround. I was away at the time but they found one of those ads and went to view this Almera. Turned out my brother actually knew the seller and your man says to my brother something along the lines of, I‘m not going to sell you this, just get back in your car and go home. He was sound about it strangely enough. There was a van with three lads in it parked across the road that my brother only noticed as they were leaving, the Almera left the car park right after my brother did and the van followed it up the road.

Fella I bought the Scooby off, after 20 minutes of looking it over I said right time to go for a spin. As I was about to get in the car he says 'now you're definitely interested in taking it? Because the last time I sold a subaru there was a car waiting down the road and I was hopped on by 3 blokes'!

Looks like a simple saggy checkstrap to me

Thanks Mike, Colm and Duke. And anyone else who replied.

09 petrol Avensis from a dealer. I'd imagine these are rare enough in petrol guise. Bit over bangernomics money, but seems to be in good condition with lowish mileage and the tax is not too bad. Not sure if it's vvti or valvematic. The valvematic are meant to be economical. I'd imagine being petrol they are reliable.

What are the most reliable diesel saloons in and around the bangernomics bracket? (willing to go up to €2.5k or so)

    Thank you :)

Not a bit biased here after 5 Passats and now in an A4 Avant, but anything VAG (VW, Audi, Seat, Skoda etc) :D

In all seriousness though, I think the 1.9 TDi especially is just a bombproof engine that will run forever if it's looked after any way right at all and no DPF etc

My wife ran a Volvo S40 MK2 with the 2 litre diesel engine for almost 3 years and that was pretty bang on also, and since that she has had a Saab 9-3 diesel and currently an Alfa 159 diesel, both of which use the same diesel engine, and they seem to be a very reliable engine too, although the Alfa (2008) has a DPF, but with the long drives it gets, that hasn't caused any issues so far

I'm like a scratched record at this stage but a 2008+ mk1 1.9tdi 100bhp octavia won't be beaten for reliability in the cheap tax era. 2008+ mk1 1.9tdi 115bhp superb worth considering too.

    2007 C180 Kompressor
Automatic with very low miles (115,000)
    NCT until May 2021
Most importantly on one of these, the timing chain etc was done 2 years ago, so should be a fairly safe bet for plenty of miles yet
Asking €1200. Would make a nice buy for a grand!

Have a real soft spot for a facelift C Class in a nice colour. That looks lovely

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,640 ✭✭✭Mad_Mike

Between the timing chain history, low mileage and that price for a 07, it would make a lovely buy alright, plus there's just something about a Merc and an auto box, they go hand in hand together

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,152 ✭✭✭26000 Elephants

At that price, with that history it's a pretty inexpensive, risk free way to live the Mercedes dream. That car could well last 10 years without anything major happening, andbit will owe you nothing.

You wouldn't get a clapped out, bogger avensis for that money

When I was looking a few years ago I found a huge amount of well-priced diesel Saabs available in the UK. Apparently they're generally reliable cars. No idea if the VRT Nox levy is punitive around that price point.

Nox will make it impossible unless you want to add around 4k to the vrt.

Only way to bring in now is petrol or euro 6 diesel

The main thing to watch with these is the M32 gearbox
It's also on the wifes Alfa 159, but had been redone before we bought it, which was a huge factor when buying
Listen out for any bad whines from the gearbox especially around that mileage

Not sure if the 8V version of the diesel engine has a DPF, so that's just something else to check for if viewing

For a convertible car that has supposedly done only 2,000 miles a year on average, for the last 17 years, there is a distinct lack of detail in that ad.

Looking at getting something asap, even today. Would really appreciate a few pointers on worthwhile ads.

I've been looking at Passats this morning. This one looks pretty solid; https://www.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/vw-passat-nct-low-mileage/25246801

As usual I just don't know what to look out for though, there are a few passats there but varying tax, price, mileage etc.

    I'm looking for;

    Diesel, low tax, clean
    Dublin-based (or nearby)
Dealer would be preferable but an honest looking private seller okay too.

Willing to spend to get something really good, not set on a Passat either.

    Any recommendations would be brilliant.

If it was a bit older I’d buy it myself, it looks lovely. 03 is a bit too new for a classic policy unfortunately. The wheels and the colour really set it off

Came up in the search I had set up for the same "type" ads
Basically the search was for diesel cars between 1500-2500 and mileage less than 100,000kms and then see if they show numberplates and if the seller is newly listed on Donedeal and it ticks all the suspect boxes again

[EDIT]They also all use the line or phrase "t belt and service kit all done 6 weeks ago"[/EDIT]

interesting cheap tax d4d mk2 avensis estate
test till January and looks pretty clean outside and the interior is really only let down by the drivers footwell.
Seller has his full name in the ad.
215k miles but headgasket done 3k miles ago with a receipt from Dan Daly engines
Last change of ownership was August 19 and then the headgasket was done in september so it looks like the current seller bought the car, got stung with a big repair bill and is now looking to recoup some costs.
Asking €1450 after a price drop but ripe for some further haggling.

chancey but the big repair could be out of the way

The diesel engines in Mazda 6's of that generation gave awful trouble if I remember correctly.

2.0 diesel in Volvo is much better unit than this overpriced 1.6 from the dealer iirc.

But at that end of market it is all about that particular car rather than general opinion.

A6 in manual not sure about it and with 400k+ on the clock you really want to see some receipts for work and services done in the past.
