Not too surprised. Nice motor for €1600 :-)

As a former 159 owner I can say they are a fantastic car for quick driving over twisty roads, look great and generally have few problems and can be picked up for beer money.

But for gods sake, get the front subframe and sills checked for rust - it's a major issue for them and parts are scarce.

Not to mention the steering rack... They are notorious to fail...

The 159 is a pretty good bangernomics buy these days. It’s not at all too difficult to find one under a grand or so. Smart looking cars at that money they are too

The box on the 1.9 is also crap.

If you can live with "a few scrapes" this looks like a nice bit of flash for the money

06 X5 diesel, NCT till Feb 2020, good bit of recent work done too, €2k

I know they’re getting rare but they weren’t making that money 10 years ago

Knowing that Diesel bangers are risky anyway, how is Insignia reliability wise? Looking at couple 2009 models under 2K - all superficially okay, but note sure what could be wrong underneath! Any thoughts?

They're like old Massey Ferguson and Ford tractors though in so far as the exporters set the absolute floor of their market value. €1000 on the nose is about the price of a tested straight diesel one. If its clean and a nice colour you can add a few €'s to that.

I'd rather go down to the local casino with that 2k and take my chances than buy an Insignia of that vintage. Their problems are well documented on the interweb - M32 gearbox failure and oil pump seal failure are some that come to mind. Buy one at your peril.

Know someone who had one years ago and thought it were quite thirsty. There's was a 1.5 automatic.

The photo in your post and the ones on the ad aren't the same car it seems. Unless you pulled that from elsewhere......

Haha yeah, I pulled it from elsewhere .. I had a few Terios windows open ! must have got mixed up!

    They probably have Toyota reliability..

As far as I know they are permanently 4 wheel drive as well so that's probably why there bad on juice as well as being 4 speed auto. The lad I know didn't have it that long so can't comment on reliability.

  • Registered Users Posts: 73,447 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

Tax was quite high post 08 whoch is a good indicator of them being heavy on juice, I quite like them, they’re based on the 00-06 Rav4 platform, but obviously smaller.

I paid €4,750 for a 99 facelift Vectra petrol privately in 2005 which would be the equivalent of buying a 13 reg now obviously. At the time pre facelift 99 models were getting plentiful for under the €5k mark but not so much the facelift models. You would have being paying considerably more for a comparable 99 Avensis or Primera for example at the time. The Vectra/ Insignia was never really a strong used car seller.

For what its worth it wasn't the most unreliable car I've ever had and put up considerable mileage on it but what did go wrong was expensive to rectify. It was smooth and comfy but the handling was woeful. I know yeah, I may as well be comparing apples and oranges never mind Royal Gala and Pink Lady if trying to compare that Vectra with the Insignia though.

09 Picanto, 1 litre, test till next April, €1500

This could be an alright little starter car for someone, new enough reg so easy insured and all that. I'm actually driving an auto one at the minute and its not the worst thing in the world
