    Seriously this is getting ridiculous.

You were buying nearly new and now gone to cars at the end of their life and worthless....

  • Registered Users Posts: 806 ✭✭✭FrankC21

    Frank are you trolling, seriously.....

You have been told what you should be going for.

A petrol will not suit your needs one bit the same as you buying a festa to do what is it 2k km a week....

You need something up in the years and now your going backwards again and now looking at an old mark 3 Mondeo petrol ...

I'm not going to bother anymore and I honestly think others are completely fed up now too ... It's like the weather ...

Go for something as new as possible that you can afford, just because you purchase off a garage doesn't mean it's any better or covered all depends on the price as with low end cars they aren't going to be doing much to look after it....

Get yourself the Laguna or megane or fluence and it will do you for a while and move on up ....

I'm not, you guys advised me to go cheap and save the extra cash for maintaining it. I am just thinking that if I go with used old diesel car there will be more trouble than petrol cars.

I am just going with your advice against buying new cars. I'm confused.

Nobody advised against new, it is all to do with what one can afford and is it worth spending a fortune on something when you don't have the money.

As you will be driving the diesel as it was intended the risk of issues is much lower as it's getting the drive it needs...

The biggest problems with diesel is those that bought and have no need for them hence so many are going back petrol after 10 years or so.

We have given you a wealth of advice, buy like with anything in life there is no guarantee with anything that it will be reliable and trouble free.

Do your homework, pick out 2 or 3 cars. Check them out, drive them and get it looked at as even if fresh NCT doesn't mean the car is any better it's just it was ok on that day of test....

You need something comfortable so id be loking at what we have recommended and work up to likes of an Audi A6 or Skoda superb or something that will be super comfortable...

Frank, your looking at rubbish cars that are no better or are actually worse than what you are driving now. If your going to be changing cars then what's the point in spending money and changing to something fit for the bin? You have been given plenty of examples of decent cars in the past from posters in this thread and threads you have started including myself but you never seem to follow up on them and then come back a few days or weeks later with either slightly different criteria or a different budget. You have gone from sub 1k petrol cars to 16k diesel cars and everything in between. Maybe you are genuinely confused but it's very hard for most here to know what if your serious or just killing time browsing donedeal.

€750 is not cheap for a 14 year old rough looking petrol Mondeo. In fact it's expensive, that car is worth about €450 or €500 max imo. Those engines are just kak and drink as much oil as they do petrol.

If they had Honda reliability they probably would of being the best cars of their class imo. I was lucky with my 04 one but not so lucky with the S40 with oil usage.

Frank going by what your needs, mileage etc you should look at a 1.8 Civic. Be hard to find a better petrol with decent economy.

I agree with you , I bought a 2 year old one in 2009, I could'nt believe the urban MPG( about 12) It returned about 45 on a long run. The worst car I ever had.

    Don't want to waste anyone's time looking for actual links as I don't plan on buying for a while, but just wondering what a good car would be to meet the below criteria that I can keep an eye out for;
    • Something that looks smart and presentable (I posted a 2005 Megane a couple of days ago that I like the look of)
    • Comfortable to drive
    • Budget around the 1k mark give or take
    • Would do well enough on fuel for urban and longer drives
    • Not expecting it to last a lifetime, would plan on upgrading within 2 years or so

Also if anyone here is planning on selling soon feel free to drop me a PM

Funny enough, I was going to post this here tomorrow, it might suit your needs but perhaps it’s a bit small.

I’ll have a 06 1.2 Clio, new shape, with NCT and tax til September (+ test extension to January) available to anyone here who might be looking. 2 owners, with loads of service history and reasonable miles - 130 km.

It was going on Donedeal for 1250, but I’d take a grand or so from someone here.

It would be quite similar to the Megane you posted but a bit smaller.

Bought a jeep off that chap a few years ago, easy to deal with honest dealer.

Very few Mondeos of this vintage still on the road. Lots of small niggly things go wrong around the 11 - 12 year mark. In my one The bonnet release went, boot wouldn’t open, window regs went, air con flange went,
Plus a few other bits and pieces. They all cost hundreds to fix on a car worth less than the price of the repairs

    Burn it....

I've a 2005 with 306k km on it sitting in the drive.

New starter and window reg.... Fuel pump knackered... Still drives and can't give it away

If maintenance costs are an issue then get one of these.

Cheap tax diesel Octavia, NCT'd til October and tax til August, €1150

Same owner for the last ten years, although it is being offered by a trader. Worth a look still IMO. Looks smart in the picture

Nice clean simple car with a hands free kit and plenty NCT. A steal really at that price.

Not as clean as the last one I posted but would be more fuel efficient and lower tax and insurance.

Nice spec on this Megane. Other 2 cars would be more reliable but the Megane more comfortable.

Now this is a proper wagon, priced at €2200 so probably got sub 2k. 6 cyl 325i touring in topaz blue and also manual! I’d say this is as rare as they come on this side of the pond. Someone please buy it or I’ll have to.

Thank you sir. Probably a bit small for me alright. I currently drive a 1.4 Corolla. Is it a 3 door?

Should have said I'm based in Dublin as well.

Something like this would be nice yeah. Driving a 1.4 Corolla at the moment so I'd be hoping for similar tax/insurance but this probably wouldn't be a big leap.

I'll keep an eye out for Astras. I'm based in Dublin though so this one would be too far to get to.

Very high on the wanted list for myself. Had a 318ci e46 coupe a few years back and loved it. If my commute changed and didnt need a diesel, I'd have something like above in the drive.

I’ve had every iteration of this car from 318i to 330d, the manual 325 is the one you want though, fantastic sounding and just enough power for it to be fun too. They’re not that bad on juice actually, being a manual really helps, the auto 325 is thirsty.

Very hard to know what cars will make in the current climate, but normally if it's a 1.4 petrol and with mileage as low as that, I'd be listing for around 1250, hoping to get a grand or maybe 1100, but something tells me it would probably be more like list at 950 or a grand, and expect 800
