I bought my (wife's) bangernomics Ford C-Max from him last Jan. Small trader. Does get in a lot of clean higher mileage cars with plenty of test left.

I was going to look at an Octavia he was selling just over a year ago but a more suitable car at a more convenient location turned up for me at the 11th hour. He does seem to present his stock very well in fairness but again he is a trader masquerading as a private seller on Donedeal.

    Speaking of Octavia's.

I drove a 65hp (MPI) 2017 Polo in Greece as a hirecar. It's the slowest car I've ever driven, and genuinely could not accelerate up a moderate hill in any gear. It was frightening in how little it could do power wise. I was also convinced it was a non-turbo diesel because of the narrow rev band and noise. Would not recommend, even for city driving.

I had a non turbo 1.0 Fabia estate as a rental, and while it wasn’t quick by any means, It wasn’t horrendous either.

    This brings back memories!

Last year I arrived at Zadar airport at midnight and picked up my rental Polo to drive 3 hours across the border into B&H and it was painful. The foot was planted to the floor and on some gradients, it literally was dying. I spent a few days going to Split and Dubrovinik and never again. I'll happily pay a hundred euro more next time for an Astra or something!

It's an Alfa, it's got low mileage, over a years test (07/21) and it'll even come with a warranty.

Granted, it's not the best Alfa or the best engine. And €1895 seems optimistic.

2007 Astra estate. I'd want the giving less than the €975 he looking for. The test is just out but it's very low mileage for the year. Anyone know what these 1.6's are like reliability-wise?

Not as bad as my journey from Split to Dubrovnik, where the bus driver was ragging it so much that the engine shat itself. Had to wait 2 hours for a replacement bus to come, it was sweltering hot too.

    Genuine mistake on my part.

Thanks for being so polite and helpful. This kind of thing is why I love boards.ie and didn't leave it for 5 years....

    Chape tax Hyundai i30 diesel.

Once it's not making noises going into reverse, this is probably the least risky cheap diesel you can get, No DMF, no DPF, and well built.
This one is reasonably well specced too

1 owner in Ireland (it's a UK import), and sold by a dealer, so some semblance of a warranty probably applies.

    2 owner 2007 Rav4 with 278 days or €755 of tax left.

(Tax is real, and its not on PSV/Island tax, its the real deal €994)
    Lots of test too

These are actually good to drive, and the 135PS version of the 2.2 engine isn't as flakey as the 180 in the Lexus IS.

    https://www.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/toyota-rav-4-4wd-tax-april-2021-2007/25078754

    Not bad for €1900 asking.

2 owner 2007 Swift with low mileage

    https://www.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/suzuki-swift-nct-11-20-54-000-miles/24829189

Price maybe on the high side, but looks to be well kept.

Thoroughly respectable Volvo C70 convertible with tonnes of test

Small bit of tax on it.

Rough and ready 1.8 Type S Civic, tax til August, test til November, 1 previous owner, €895

Doesn't look too bad for the money really!

That's good to know Colm_mcm. As time moves on & we're looking at bangernomics diesels & only doing small mileage its good to know what doesn't have the dreaded DPF.

A little strong on price but looks lovely. A grand old boat to waft around in: https://www.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/mercedes-e240-elegance-auto-new-nct/25179163

Very overpriced but a rare care with an immaculate interior: https://www.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/jaguar-s-type-r/25132792

  • Registered Users Posts: 73,454 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

That E240 is overpriced. Nobody wants to tax a 2.6 when you can get them in 1.8 kompressor.
    I love those wheels though.

The Jag is just a regular 2.5 litre S type and not an R
The R is a different beast altogether with a 4.2 litre supercharged engine

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,631 ✭✭✭Mad_Mike

That Merc does look lovely alright. Pity about our ****ty motor tax rates. That car deserves to be driven for many more years, but road tax will sadly just kill it

  • Registered Users Posts: 73,454 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

The S Type is such an underrated car, Car guys mock them, but your average punter thought they were worth huge money back in the day. I bought one 8 years ago for small money and the amount of people who thought it cost a fortune was unreal. Totally different to say an E Class or a 5 Series in that respect.
It did have its shortcomings though, most of the interior was cheaply designed even if most of the materials were expensive.
It was much quicker than it looked too (3.0 manual)

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,631 ✭✭✭Mad_Mike

I think it's mainly down to looks. The big grille wasn't everyones cup of tea, but I think they look well, kind of a natural progression of old Jag to a new more modern look while preserving the original Jag image, and like you say, people still perceive them to be a VERY expensive car

One of the worst adverts I've seen on Donedeal when it comes to description!
Leaving that to one side, this has NCT until January next year and I'm guessing there aren't even a handful of 156 Ti's left running in the country at this stage
If this was running any way right, it's got to be worth the asking price all day long
    Listed at €650

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,631 ✭✭✭Mad_Mike

    Decent looking 2006 Volvo S40 MK2 diesel
It's the 2 litre version which is very reliable compared with the 1.6
Ran one of these for almost 3 years and other than servicing, I think it got a pair of springs on the rear and a front CV boot
With the 6 speed box and cruise control, I used to average around 52mpg (5.4l/100kms) on long runs and the heated seats were nice in the winter
NCT actually runs until January on this with the Covid extension
    Asking price is €750

Speaking of Alfas, here is a nice tidy looking petrol 159:

    NjAwOTNiODA3ZTI5N2FkNjBhY2I5OWY0ODk3MjBhOGLoV4uyyFpg2NQMAT9zWMm3aHR0cDovL3MzLWV1LXdlc3QtMS5hbWF6b25hd3MuY29tL2RvbmVkZWFsLmllLXBob3Rvcy9waG90b18xNDk4NDYyNzF8fHwxMjAweDEyMDB8fHx8fHx8fA==.jpeg

    https://www.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/low-mileage-belts-done-nct-alfa-159/25186278

Having previous NCT certs is a good sign. Asking 1200 but if you could get it for a grand then it looks like a half decent purchase.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,631 ✭✭✭Mad_Mike

Very low mileage and the fact the timing belt has been done also would make that a great buy at a grand
Pity the interior is just cloth, but still a lovely car

This one won't hang around for long!
2004 Bora 1.4 with only 90,000 miles and looks original
Last owner has it 5 years
Couple of months tax and NCT on it
    €525
