    350 eur

There's not even 8 weeks test on that unfortunately, so even though it's cheap, it doesn't qualify

What is the mileage/time interval for changing the timing belt and water pump on these TTiD Saabs?
Looks like the owner got it done shortly after he got it.
From the photo - it looks like it was done 50k miles ago / 5 years ago.
Anything else major to watch out for on these?
When do clutches tend to need replacing on the 180hp version - would you expect one with 150k miles to be on its original?

    MtM

Despite what Opel/Vauxhall or Saab say, they should be changed every 3/4 years. It's not an expensive job on them, and if it has a metal pump impeller, you only need to change that every other belt.

If the belt does break, the hydraulic lash adjusters take the brunt of the trauma so often they arent too expensive to fix. Loads of scrap Unsignia engines around for parts.

Dont ask me how I know......

As for the clutch - who knows? Each car will have it's own story.

Don't forget the oil pick up seal that goes in them and can write off the engine.
This can show itself as s low pressure warning on start up.

There are a few 8th Gen (2006-2011) 1.8L Civics up for sale that qualify for Bangernomics. Any opinions on them? Particularly the saloon, as there are a few good looking examples on Donedeal.

They’re as reliable as the day is long.
Parts are expensive but you shouldn’t need many.

Did over 500km in one on Friday, a mix of twisty mountain roads and motorways.

Averaged 48 mpg and it was just a pleasure to drive, they are very comfortable.

Thanks lads, I was thinking that they all seem well priced and I was wondering if there was something i didn't know about them that might account for this.

I'll let you know if I find, and buy, a good example.

Thanks, I'd been planning on seeing that but did a history check and the first owner was long term but there were two subsequent owners, one 3 months and one 5 months. So I'm a bit wary of it. Priced very cheaply all the same.

    Audi A4 Avant - 2l TDI 170bhp 152,232miles

    €2,250

Is it priced ok? Thinking of changing vRS and want something to tie me over a while.

Might get it closer to €2,000?

I'd be interested in that SAAB 9-3 Aero TTiD that was posted earlier (if it's still available). Which would be the better value and reliable?

    Thanks

    Could be for tax avoidance.

If thats the worst to come out of a history check on a sub €1k car you are doing alright!

I posted that here last week and the engine light was on apparently due to an EGR fault. Seems to be with a new owner now

He said there is no fault on the dash and wasn't one when he bought it.

That's this guy who lists his stuff sometimes as Dublin and sometimes as Mullingar and his photos are always horrendous
I think I posted a Volvo estate he had last week. I really don't get how anyone can post pictures like that these days!
Having said that, he has 123 lifetime ads and he buys a car for a grand and sells for 2395, so who am I to try telling him how to do it right :D:D

A clean blue 2004 one went up this morning with NCT for 350 quid. Needless to say it's long gone! They are such a simple car to do work on too and parts are very easy to get and cheap

A cheap tax diesel one was posted here a few weeks ago (I think by Duke) anyways it was listed at about €1200 and was susequently marked sold at €850.

Someone got an absolute bargain when you study over just how cheap to run such a car would be.

  • Registered Users Posts: 12,079 ✭✭✭✭Duke O Smiley

They really are fantastic little cars. A diesel one on cheap tax is probably one of the most frugal bangernomics options there is, I can’t think of anything that might best it. Like a modern day 1.0 td Daihatsu Charade!

A few years ago we passed up on a very good deal on a load of ex-rental 2010/12 petrol examples. At the time I was a bit hesitant because of the Fiat badge, and we had just started with the Jap imports. Proved to be a mistake I wouldn’t make twice. Another fella up the road bought them, made a fortune on them, and had no trouble with any of them.

I had a 07 100 BHP later, which was class, and I’ve driven loads since. Will definitely have a diesel one at some stage

Almost 5 months NCT left on it and looks pretty tidy
Asking €1250. I doubt you'd get away with a grand, but with a good haggle, maybe 1100 Euro for a 2006 Prius wouldn't be too bad
Would almost tempt me to try a hybrid after years of diesels

    Although....

    OTJiZDhiMGEyNjdmMTJkNDMwNmYwOTVhZDJiMGQ0ZmJPsyWpKd0kZQO2XWiAFMSQaHR0cDovL3MzLWV1LXdlc3QtMS5hbWF6b25hd3MuY29tL2RvbmVkZWFsLmllLXBob3Rvcy9waG90b18xNDEwNzc4Njl8fHw2MDB4NjAwfHx8fHx8fHw=.jpeg

Same year, but only 2 owners compared to 6 on the one above
NCT until February 2021 and 25,000 miles less
Asking €1500. If that could be bought for around €1250-1300, I think I'd go for that one

  • Registered Users Posts: 73,454 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

On those Prius’s if you’re looking at Irish ones, look at ones with front fogs because they were bundled with cruise control and a 9 speaker JBL system. Called a Luxury pack, and definitely worth having.

Now it was possible to retrofit fogs to a base model, but rule of thumb would be if it hasn’t got front fogs then it hasn’t got the luxury pack.
