Almera great car. Had one for 8 years and spent nothing. Decent space, chassis ok and engine bulletproof. A bit shiny plastic inside alright.

I concur, almera's are bulletproof engine wise, comfortable and spacious. Corrosion can be a issue but a great vehicle.

Low miles check out. Change of owner in the last month however. Seems to be good value.

Hi guys, Currently looking at a Saab 9-3 1.9 diesel in the bangereconomics price range. Anything to look out for in these. How is the automatic transmission on them?

Currently looking at ones with 130-160k miles on them.

As with most diesels, there is the EGR and DPF, so make sure you're giving it decent long drives to prevent blockages.

Main things to look out for on buying would be the front coolant pipe across the engine. Its made from steel and can rust badly and is an awful job to change. Some of them will have been done already.

The diesels can be sluggish sometimes to start. Normally it's either the starter needs changing or can be an issue with the negative lead connections corroding. A lot of people change alternator and battery thinking it will solve it, but its usually the starter or just a bad connection.

Some of the 9-3's can feel a little bit sloppy in the steering wheel. This isn't a huge job to sort and actually feels worse than it is, but the universal joint at the bottom of the steering column can wear and allow a mm or 2 movement.

Make sure the windscreen washer is working. The pump can burn out on them. Costs about £10 sterling and very simple to fit, but it can be a common failure.

Sometimes the electric window will not go up fully without the anti-pinch mechanism cutting in numerous times. Again, this is an easy fix with a reset procedure, but something to look for.

Rear shock bump stops tend to go on them. Only cost around a tenner, but if you hear any slight thump in the rear, it's probably the rubber bump stops.

To be fair, most of the items mentioned are very cheap simple fixes, but just putting them here to ease any worries if you come across them.

I have never had one with auto transmission, so couldn't tell you on that front, but I believe the auto box is supposed to be quite reliable in them

What sort of distance is considered to be a long drive and how often would you need to be doing it?

If you live in Dublin don't get a diesel but if you live in the country side and drive a fair distance a lot of the time you should not get blockages.

You can drive short distances in the countryside too though so it's up to your driving which should dictate if you buy petrol or diesel but if you commute at least 40-70 kms one way you would be fine.

Driving to a local town a neighbour or a relative just down the road you would have issues.

    Exactly as @wotzgoingon says.
I'm in Mullingar and most of my drives are maybe an hour long on motorway up to Dublin and same back.

What's the catch with this one? Seems a very low price for what it is?

They go cheap these days. Mentioned them earlier few days ago as I was surprised, too.

Not sure 90k is believeable in 10 years.

I would be careful with that one when it comes to mileage anyway.

B segment hatches with their roof cut off are never going to hold their value in a place like Ireland (and are likely to be shaky as f**k over a bad road). The equivalent hatch of that era is a good, solid, if unremarkable motor. I'm sure that convertible would serve someone well if they want some wind in the hair. But as a petrol head i'd wince if i seen one coming down the road ha! I'd rule it out under the "something you'd actually drive yourself" criteria set out on page 1". Get a Suzuki Swift Sport or something of its ilk. Each to their own obviously ha

Great engine in them mitsubishis. I collected one in Manchester as a company car (yeah I know) and was running very late for the ferry back. I thrashed it at all the way to Holyhead to make the boat.

When I got home I discovered that it was very low on oil. It needed 1.5 litres to top it up. How it did not explode i still don't know.

Car ran like a champ for the next 60,000 km before I moved job. Its still on the road too.

They're cheap because they're common as muck. They're a good car though, especially with that 2.0l engine. The 1.8l needs 2 timing belts changed each time, with 1 being a wet belt that is often skipped. They can be a ticking time bomb if you don't have the receipts for both.

I have a bangernomics mirsubishi outlander with nearly 300k kms on the clock. It's purring like a baby to the point I'm nervous its so trouble free...
Seem to be very well built engines in them.

    Hey folks,

    Hope you are all well.

You've guided me brilliantly in the past, so I'm looking for a bit of advice for a friend of mine. He's looking for a second car and the wife likes the Qashquai. He has 3k to spend, which I'm aware is over the Bangernomics limit, but any help would be appreciated!

Also, which of the engines would you recommend?
    1.4 petrol
    1.6 petrol
    1.5 diesel

They won't be doing any serious mileage in it as it is not the primary vehicle, so I suggested the 1.6, without any real knowledge of them.

    Thanks again.

BTW one of the best threads on boards!
    Hi there 80’s Child.

We have a 1.6 petrol 2007 Qashqai bought in 2015 with 190,000 km on it. 230,000 km on it now. Was €5,500 at the time and diesel ones were selling for c. €8,000. Higher tax if €514 but justified at the time with the lower purchase price. Very good engine. Mostly driven about town, with a few 700 km round trips per year. Things that have been replaced are: clockspring (airbag light comes on) and windscreen wiper linkage. Through google and my mechanic they are a common enough fault. If you’re doing low annual mileage, like we are, I’d recommend the 1.6 petrol. I can see us holding onto it for another 5 years, all going well. Hope this helps.

PS Thanks to all the regular contributors to this thread.

How's it going folks, a friend recommended this thread to me, looking for some advice if possible.
First time buyer with very little knowledge of cars, just looking for something small and in good condition. Wouldn't be driving it too regularly and certainly not for long journeys, distance to work and back is less than 10 miles and to be honest I'd only use it for work if I was stuck or in a hurry.
Was looking at this car at the weekend, would appreciate any opinions on it or any other recommendations.

2006 mightn't be great for insurance. 15 or 1600 would most likely get you a 2009/10 fiat panda which would be a nicer place to be than the picanto.

Not bangernomics if it needs fixing, there is a fixer upper thread but it’s gone a bit quiet
