Very interesting car! Surprised it's not faster 0-60 8-8.5 seconds) with that much power and torque. Were they known to be any good, or just a fancy Passat?

It weighs well over 2 tonne.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,152 ✭✭✭26000 Elephants

It’s no better or worse than my previous 1.3 Corolla, never bothered me

But having the system that's suppose to save fuel it's terrible.

I don't think they are about saving fuel as much as being as efficient as possible and being capable of zero emissions when needed. Regardless of how they are operated, all their energy has to come from burning petrol. Most people just use the motors to boost the low HP of the engine, completely negating any advantages.

On the 2 occasions this year where I was stuck with renting a hybrid (thanks, Enterprise) I never got any great fuel economy. In fact the hybrid Auris was worse than the petrol one I rented earlier.

It's definitely not a fancy Passat. Rather a less fancy Bentley Continental...

Fantastic car, but not to be run on shoestring budget...

The 4-motion would scare me off that car, + tax

    1 owner, low miles, 12 months NCT - €2k

Suspiciously cheap or just a realistic seller?

Serious amount of car there for that money!
I've actually been looking at the Audi A8 with same engine recently, and hard to find anything decent around that age for less than double the price of that

How different is 4-motion from the garden haldex setup used in other Vagmobiles?
My biggest fear with a car like that would access to proper diagnostic software. I take it VCDS wont do a Phaeton?

...... I take it VCDS wont do a Phaeton?

    Is supported

I'd say a good trade would be to buy it to break on mainland Europe

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,152 ✭✭✭26000 Elephants

Ok, so phaeton uses torsen setup from A8, so nothing too frightening there. With the right software and access to reasonable budget, that phaeton shouldn't be too difficult to run.

    Bangernomics it wont be, alas.

I read that the repairs bills for that car can be eye watering.
Wanted a 4.0tdi once and saw the reviews of owners who were quoted 5 figure sums to replace the turbos.

    Premium product, premium pricing...

Meh, I was quoted €840 by Alfa romeo to fit a new alternator to a Giulietta with stop/go. Got a s/h one on Ebay and had it fitted, all done just €150.

€10,000+ would be hardly typical to do a turbo on a 3.0tdi?

A range rover sport I would well believe it, the whole bloody body has to come off....

That's outrageous. Designers should be shot with balls of their own sh!t for that.

I have read that RANGE ROVER allow 4 hour's labour, for a warranty claim- for removal of body! I dread to think the hourly rates from SPIRIT or STEWART'S.

This could well be when it was new or at a dealers. Read it a long time ago.

It's not thru error or incompetence they do it imo. More a combination of doing it purposefully and not giving a ****e cos they know it'll be paid. Motorbikes are worse, they make changing a headlight bulb a 3-4 job on most of them.

That's mad. If that wasn't so high up you would be afraid the body would fly off in a crash. A bad a crash like high speed. It would never happen that unless it crashed into something high up, higher than the LR frame so direct hit to the body.

The beauty is, you bolt that body on a vintage chassis, and voila, €56 tax and vintage insurance:D

The Honda IMA has no electric only mode, so never runs zero emissions, the electric motor just adds a little extra to the petrol engine.

I've this in saved my watch list just purely because it seems like good value. Owner has had it since may 2018 and its a fresh modern looking car for the money.

    https://www.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/skoda-octavia-2009-estate/22708433

I'd say this is a very good example. Owner has had it since June 2012 and it looks well minded. It's way overpriced though. But surely he knows at this stage he won't get 3k for it. Sub 2k would be about right getting the seller to see it that way would be the hard part.

I bet this is clean and well looked after too. Same owner since December 16 and supposedly a full services history. Asking €850 very short test though and its in Mayo and it's only a 07.
    What's reliability like in these?

    Both are pretty good actually.

Still on the lookout for a small petrol in the northwest. Had a look at a clio which was rough as hell, a Yaris where the engine sounded like a bag of spanners, and a fiesta which was decent but e1500 for 2005, and the seller wouldn't budge on the price. Any opinions about this? Yes it's ugly.

Only a couple of weeks away if you were to do an early test for 15 months NCT.

    And you're right, it's ugly.

  • Registered Users Posts: 12,078 ✭✭✭✭Duke O Smiley

That looks a nice example of a very unremarkable car. Test is a bit short but I doubt you’d have much trouble getting it through another in January.

They are grand cars really. Not the last word in refinement but it will get you from A to B fairly sound. I would say it’s only worth about a grand with a fresh NCT though.

Looks like a bargain to me, they are a very reliable car and that looks like a well looked after low mileage unit, snap it up.
