Nope it has the old reliable M47 engine

The chain problems are with its successor, the N47 engine

Cheap tax 159 diesel with a years test, €1750

I think its a little bit expensive, because these can be had for buttons now, but this looks a nice example and if the recon gearbox checks out I'd say it could be worth a punt. It needs to be 1500 though

Never drove a 156 but I've been in a few 159's and felt they were plenty good in the corners.

What’s that 1.9 diesel like? Think they’re around 150bhp which would be loads, but what are they like to run over 40-50k. Do you have to be as delicate with servicing like with the petrols?

No, they are solid 1.9 JTD. They only have issues with DPF and flaps in intake manifold. Plus the famous M32 gearbox made by GM :/

159 diesel is very front-heavy and has loads of understeer.

Sounds like a lot of the BMW engines from around that time.

Standard diesel car front heavy but I wouldn't say loads of understeer some yes but with good tyres they hold well.

The much lauded v6 alfas were generally criticised for being nose heavy and understeer prone too.
Sounds like a lot of the BMW engines from around that time.

They take a remap well as long as the preventative stuff is done but as said the box is the weakness whereas in the bmw's of the time this was their strongest part.

I drove my 159 in the typical Italian manner and can't say I ever had a problem with understeer. What I did have an issue with was the stupidly low front subframe grounding out on B roads. This was a regular issue which I've never had in any other car.

The 2.4 litre 5 cylinder diesel in the 159 would be a nicer choice over the 1.9 litre. No M32 gearbox made of chocolate either and a remap gives the 2.4 litre bags of torque. Rare enough to find one here though.

Agreed but who would want to pay that kind of road tax and still drive a diesel manual banger?

Edit - under the new CO2 system the tax is a reasonable €750, so just €180 more than the 1.9l 4 pot. So yeah, I agree with you even more now :)

Yeah that's the one I had.
Both in the 156 and the 159.
159 was a q4 which is pretty rare and had the egr blanked and mapped.
Pushed around 250bhp if I remember correctly and it went quite well.
Pity it wasn't an automatic but it was a lovely cruiser
The back passengers had literally no room but I didn't give a toss and it was very reasonable on juice.
    Lovely sound from it.

The bumper, lights and grill don't line up. I don't remember the gaps being that bad. Didn't think it got colour coded bumpers until later, but I could be wrong.
