Any thoughts on the E90 with the M47 engine?

    Are they generally reliable?

    Always Sceptical of the “seller”

Celica , full years test apparently.
These make sensible bangermomics I think

Does that play both tapes & cds? ( Pic #5)

Ran one of a similar vintage for about 18 months, in that time I changed 5 wheel bearings, both rear abs rings, ECU got waterlogged and needed to be changed and coded, rear shocks, 2x sets of front drop links, 2x rear hub linkages. The diesel tank also leaked if filled over half way, I think it’s a common issue with the tank breather.
Not a bother with the engine other than the ECU issue, a lovely car otherwise.

I know I'm being pedantic now but if its NCT'd until 31/08/20 then its NCT 08/20 rather than 09/20 as the seller suggests in the title. It may be ok but many will agree that a cheap BMW does not work out to be cheap in the long run.

It's not greenlight verified (not a big deal)
    The reg isn't shown
The "seller" is selling another newer bmw too.

These 3 things combined would put me off.

Plenty of m47 e90 320d's popping up for sale that are much more genuine than that one and all at a similar enough price. Msport ones are cheap as well.

Agree with all of the above.

It’s a rotten looking 320d to boot, it’s not an msport, crappy looking bumpers, crappy seats etc. Wouldn’t be getting a horn for that one. Bombproof engine though.

You’d get a really nice 320d msport spec for not much more and it’s an entirely nicer car. If you weren’t fussy about having a 320d you could go for the 318d msport variant, less power but cheaper to buy and less likely to have been owned by a chungfella who used it for “rings” at crossroads.

Yep. That the same tape player as a base model Avensis had. It was quite common back then for a separate (but still integrated) CD player to be in the dash as well as the tape deck. Mk1 Yaris for example had this as an option. I think Camry had that setup too. You’d see a few 00-02 Corollas like that as well.

  • Registered Users Posts: 11,207 ✭✭✭✭Nekarsulm

Avensis had the tape + CD up until 2007 I think.

New model 1.8 TFSI automatic A4, NCT til the end of May 2020, tax til March 2020, €1999

Bit risky, but its from a dealer (:pac:) and its got at least 1 Pirelli tyre..which says something I suppose. Six months test and a nice bit of tax

Imagine one would want to budget a TB change before taking a look?

09 Octavia TDI, 1 owner, not an import, reasonable miles, cheap tax

Tax til the end of January and a years test, €1950

A bit dear maybe, but I'd say this would be a nice buy. Hard to believe someone who wasn't a taxi driver actually bought one of these!

  • Registered Users Posts: 73,447 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

Not the 10 year driver selling it anyway. They’d know it doesn’t actually have air conditioning.

    Chauffe, Marcel, chauffe!

That's essentially still a very basic 1996 model car. Depressing to have to still pay all that money for one nearly 24 years later. It would be the last car my €2k would buy.

And don't get me wrong, I was a big fan of them back in the day. Recommended it to my mother in law, did all the negotiations myself and she got a cracking deal on a new BRG metallic one in 2003, car is still well, just a few coil packs later.

Such a modern looking car for peanuts.

Now that is just about my favourite definition of a bangernomics car!

A car that if you owned it in say France or Germany where the year (and thus the value) is not clear from the reg, it would seem to be a car worth thousands more than what you paid for it

Fine looking car for the money. We're starting to see a few of these creep into bangernomics circles

1 owner, 85k miles, only tested til March 2020 but it looks promising. €1800

Bonus (not mentioned in the ad) tax until next March too!

Not knocking your post in anyway here but the absolute hack of that compared to the merc posted above for near enough the same money.

And it’s auto, you wouldn’t pass a petrol station in it.

  • Registered Users Posts: 12,078 ✭✭✭✭Duke O Smiley

True, it is far too expensive - about a grand more than it should be IMO. But, how often do you come across an IS like that? 1 owner, low miles, obviously unmolested etc. I know its an auto, but still. It could have ended up like this!

The Merc is a very impressive and expensive looking car. If my neighbour came home with it I would think he spent at least 3k on it. But I would not touch a 6 owner, 160k mile E-Class of that generation, with tints and German plates, from a dealer, with a barge pole! I viewed a 7 series from that seller a few months ago, didn't buy as it wouldn't start when I got there!

  • Registered Users Posts: 65,317 ✭✭✭✭unkel
    Chauffe, Marcel, chauffe!

    of that generation

But you see, it is not "of that generation". It's a facelift. Night and day compared to the pre-facelift. MB had their act together again after a decade and a half of shameful poor quality and the facelift W211 is probably the first car where this became very clear. Better built and more reliable cars than BMW and Audi of the same years.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,506 ✭✭✭Interslice

Something about that merc screams expensive parts bills.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,932 ✭✭✭selectamatic

Up on €1000 to do the chain on the merc if it starts rattling. That said I really like them too.

2008 w211 e320cdi @ €1200 tax would be my pick, hard get an honest one at cheap money yet though.

However Mk1 cheap tax tdi octavia is top tier bangernomics imo.

Seriously fuel efficient, very reliable robust engine, pretty comfy but above all simple and cheap to fix should things go wrong.

The 100bhp 1.9 tdi will remap to around the 150bhp mark and stay reliable.

Personally they are a €1500 max car though. Most sell for around that price too or lower if they're rough.

What about these two protons? Cheap , reliable?. Hatchback which is handy. You’ll have a pain in your Swiss explaining to people what it is but motoring for the masses. A to B. They used to have Mitsubishi running gear. Not sure about these two.

Two prime motors prime for the bangernoimics title, but sweet flipping jaysus is rather get the bus than drive either of them, not particularly cheap either for what they are, they’d want to very sub €1k

There are no expensive repair / parts bills on bangernomics cars. By definition.
