Nothing too much been a Honda.

They're quite good on juice too.

    Nice motors.

There were lots of those volvo v50 1.6 diesels bought by work colleagues in the 06-10 period. I knew 5 owners. All lovely cars, well finished.

However all gave significant engine trouble before they were 6 years old. No owners left in the office now.

I believe the much rarer 2.0l is more reliable.
    Had the misfortune of owning a late Friday shift-built 08 2.0d V50.

The car was really well specced and supremely comfortable, and the engine might have been reliable, but the car had more Gremlins in its electronics than both Joe Dante's movies put together. Started with the DPF sensor (at around 60kmiles, yet car was driven daily on fast roads) and it all went downhill fast from that, both dealers and specialist indies could never get it right afterwards.

The think kept going into Limp mode due to misbehaving sensors (or algos self-conflicting) and the last straw for me was when the 'management unit' declared a 'major brake system fault' out of the blue, and disconnected the ignition on the spot (full disconnect, not Limp mode)...while I was cruising at 50 mph on an A road in the middle of a queue of traffic, in the dark (evening winter commute). Engine cut off, and not jump starting from clutching the gearbox, leaving me to coast to a stop. A dealer check later, and nothing wrong whatsoever with the brakes, just the sensors and the electronics continuing their f***** about. I got rid fast, and never Volvo ever again (went back to Subaru).

I still can't decide which, of this and a Fiat Brava 1.6 SX (97), is the worst car I've ever owned

I'd say it is completely opposite. They are not particularly thirsty, but far from beig reliable.

Those engines have very weak oil rings. Oil rings let some oil go through and burn, the level goes down very fast (1l/1000km is completely normal). But this is not the biggest problem - if you let the oil level go too low (which is relatively easy), you'll wear other rings and the compression goes shopping. This very soon fails the car at the NCT. On top of that the everlasting issues with corrosion.

Fantastic cars, very nicely built and superb to drive. But not reliable at all.

That's my main worry with the Maxda 6. Theres a few on Donedeal but with short NCT's and recent change of ownerships! Might look at a Civic saloon instead or 1.8 Avensis.

I have a 08 Mazda 6 1.8 2nd gen, 110,000 Km and have this exact issue right now. Practically going through 5litres of oil every 3 months, which is almost spot on 1litre/1000.

However, outside filling her up with oil, she has been seriously reliable. So once I keep an eye on the oil, the car flies it.

Sluggish drive, but really really quite and comfortable.

Hi all. Getting the itch to change my current bangernomics 2005 Honda accord 2.0 petrol. Great car but a bit thirsty at just under 34 mpg based on nearly 39k miles in 28 months. Mixed driving.

In keeping with the idea of this thread my previous two bangernomics were replaced at end of life (00 1.2 punto after over 2 years + 01 1.6 avensis after 3 years) so this is a bit of a change for the sake of it.

Torn between staying petrol or going diesel. For petrol I'm thinking of a Mazda 6 1.8 2nd gen 2008 onwards. Any opinions? Any owners on here that can advise on actual mpg?

    https://www.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/2009-mazda-6/23730826

For diesel something like a volvo v50 1.6 or one of the Renault 1.5 dci like a Fluence or megane or Hyundai i30 1.6

    https://www.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/2008-volvo-v50-1-6-diesel/23467243

    https://www.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/2010-renault-megane-estate1-5/23874275

    https://www.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/hyundai-i30-new-nct/23251103

The fear of the big diesel issues is the main concern!

I was in an identical situation a couple of years ago. I'd say you'll miss your Accord if you go into any of those cars. If staying with petrol I'd keep the Honda, or maybe get a Civic for better fuel economy (hardly worth the expense and hassle).

If diesel out of those 3 I'd go for the Megane or something with the 1.5 DCI. I looked at V50s because a friend had a petrol one and they're very nice inside, but the Diesels did not inspire confidence. Some VAG stuff with the 1.9 or 2.0 diesels like a 2008 or up Leon or Octavia might also do the trick.

Edit: have a look at diesel Saabs in the UK also. Good value available. Supposed to be reasonably reliable.

Too expensive. Worth €1250, maybe a bit more if it’s exceptional.

Yes they are. Timing chain too so no belt to worry about.

Nice wagon but they are extremely sluggish. I've seen people walking catch up to them, no joke.

Also, can probably be used to bust ghosts, with the right parts and a paint job.

Cheap tax, 2 owners, up in years, NCT til March 2021 - €1950

They're a bit grim, but this would be a grand starter car or cheap runaround
