Russia are SO unfit. None of them could keep the pace up to chase that.

Comedy of errors in the opening match.

Can see Russia fall away badly in the 2nd half. Pace of the game will take a toll

Some decent set plays from Russia. Getting behind Japan's defence.

There are a lot of kicks in behind them that their backs were labouring to get back to from the fifth minute. Definitely look leggy.

For those of you worried about Ireland's progression from the pool stages...

The Russians might not even make it to HT, out on their feet

That Japanese fullback is abysmal under the high ball

Putting serious context on the suggestions that we should be worried about Japan.

I wish the commentary would stay quiet when the TMO is deliberating with the referee.

Nonsense, it looked fine to me.

What are they on about. That was a try. Regained control.

Russia look really good for about 6 minutes. If teams can last the following 74 minutes, they might just be able to make it past them.

Looked like his other hand was on the touchline as he touched down anyway.

knock on to me, especially from that last view

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,545 ✭✭✭A2LUE42

Has there been a change to the knock on law?
He lost it, regained it, no one else touched it. Ball didn't hit the ground.

They got it wrong. Players are allowed as many bites of the cherry to grab a ball so long as it doesn't hit another player or touch the ground. Happens every game without issue.

Lenihan is wrong too, keeps mentioning separation.

did he actually regain control though?

    arguable that he didnt.

personally i would have given it, as the balance of doubt should be towards the attacker in that situation....

Had a tenner at 20/1 on any japanese player scoring a first half hat trick!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,815 ✭✭✭irelandrover

I didn't think he regained control so if they thought he lost it then i can see why they ruled it out.

guess Russia will fade as the game goes on and concede more trys. But based in that first 40 Japan look thoroughly unimpressive.

I read a description of them that seems very apt: Japan are a very rote side that pulls off their patterns well. Their passing is crisp, they're playing to behind screen runners etc and it's all well timed. But they're not actually moving the defence which is why Russia were able to soak it all up.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,545 ✭✭✭A2LUE42

Interesting explanation by Dagger there. Carried over line requires control.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,906 ✭✭✭✭PhlegmyMoses

Japan playing a super fast game at the breakdown. Wonder of they will continue that against Ireland and Scotland because I can see a lot of those quick scrum half passes off the base of the ruck being disrupted by a more savvy team. Need a but more variation

If a finger tip of pressure is considered in control, then he certainly had control.

Eddie is saying the issue is a rule change, where the player needs to maintain control as the ball goes over the try line. Regaining control didn't matter it seems.

I never heard that rule before, and from the side view, even with that interpretation, it was a very close call.

Random question but I'm looking for a a wallchart with all fixtures on it?

I know there is a few available online but I'd rather a proper poster one?

Did any of the papers do one? Or any rugby magazines?

Has anyone got one lying around that they'd be willing to post to me? I'll pay?

No love lost between Heaslip and Eddie O'Sullivan. Getting quite heated.

he's more wooden than a 10 foot oak table

The Russians look really slow at the back. Getting run by a 7 from that far out is a rarity

There are a few large, official, digital ones that can be found on Google images. You could get your nearest print shop to print one out for you if you can't get sorted here.

Edit - nevermind, they're all Japan times. That's no use.

Seems to be sense of arrogance from Japan, place kicking awful(doesn't seem to bother the OH) lots of stupid handling errors but they don't seem to care because they know it's only Russia.

I'm expecting us to rack up a serious score on them based on this showing. Our wingers should have a field day in the second half.

    Hilarious standards here really.

Both teams disappointing. Poor fare for the curtain raiser. Disappointing.

I wouldn't read too much into this to be honest.

Japan were under a lot of pressure and expected to rack up a big score today.

Next week, pressure will all be on us, and they'll be fired up with nothing to lose. We should still win comfortably, but i'd say they'll give us a scare first half
