In Oughterard tonight, at a packed community meeting, locals rejected any plans to accommodate asylum seekers at the Connemara Gateway Hotel.
Very strong statement there by the locals but doubtless the Govt will push it through anyway.

Are these the fascists we keep hearing about?

The last published figure for rough sleepers ie "on the streets" in Dublin was 235.

Ireland has a habit of calling folk who are in eg emergency accommodation "homeless" when other countries use the term only for those rough sleeping. If you have a roof over your head you are not truly homeless.

google " homeless USA " Whole families living rough or in cars by the thousand

They are homeless. Emergency accomodation is not a home. It doesnt matter what other countries do. This is Ireland and we have 10 thousand homeless people.

The twitter machine is telling me it was packed with far right activists.

Noel Grealish is in a bit of bother, he seems to have strayed badly from the path of the "woke".

I’m shocked there is an actual politician in Ireland willing to speak the truth. First time for everything.

so, there is a precedent where Germany pressures other UE state to step up migrant deportations: https://www.dw.com/en/germany-pressures-greece-to-step-up-migrant-deportations-to-turkey/a-50394194
And one of the comments on DW on this article "You can't give more than what you can afford... It's just common sense".
    - very good point indeed.

How do you know they are far right activists?

Locals have a right to be concerned see what the Mosney DP center did for that local area.

Plenty of evidence of Africans coming for our social welfare system with an unemployment rate 45-63% discussed extensively on another thread

I live near mosney, they dont cause much hassle in fairness.
However when they are given leave to remain, more ofren than not they are housed in balbriggan. Its nearly 2k a month to rent a 3 bed semi in balbriggan now.
Totally unsustainable for a working couple but no bother to the government to pony up. Something wrong when local workers cant afford to live there anymore.

I somewhat agree, there's a lot of bleeding hearts for people bundled up safely in hotels, but I can tell you your 'criteria' there doesn't include people in homeless hostels, or hidden homeless lucky enough to get in to tourist hostels, or people that aren't visible for any count, all of which is indeed in the thousands.

I'm very aware of the situation in the US, and perhaps you yourself would be better off informing yourself more, searching for 'Invisible People' on YouTube is a far better look at the problem then randomly searching 'homeless usa'.

That lula aisghair believes we have 240,000 empty houses we can give out to anyone who needs them.

There are 240,000 empty homes in Ireland. The government could give every individual homeless person and asylum seeker a house and still have plenty left over. They just don't want to.

I'd be curious if anyone has corroborated Grealish's "spongers" comments. I only say this as guy who said he made the comments with those exact words (Joe Loughnane) is a well-known head-the-ball and permanent student in Galway. He once flew off the handle ranting and raving at an Israeli speaker in NUIG, a genuinely unhinged outburst.

His personal account tweets are protected. A sure sign of a dickhead.

If he did actually make those comments, it'd be very difficult for anyone (even on here) to try and argue that he's not a racist.

What exactly is he supposed to have said do you know?

I'd agree with that. If he did indeed call Africans 'spongers' then it's fair to file him in the racist drawer.

I'd like to hear corroboration though, as the chap making the claim wouldn't be someone who I'd take my news from and expect it to be delivered reliably.

Joe Loughnane alleges that Grealish said that the majority of Africans coming here are economic migrants (that happens to be true, the vast majority of international protection / asylum claims are turned down) and they are here to sponge off the system (if he said this, certainly a racist comment).

Loughnane also alleges that Grealish stated that the only legitimate refugees are Christians fleeing ISIS.

If he said those things, with those formulation of words, particularly the word 'spongers,' he should fall on his sword. However, I'd like to hear confirmation of such from another party before condemning him - as the gentleman making the claim is a crackpot to my mind.

No point commenting on that really, although ive no problem with spongers and frauds being called out for what they are. Apparently this galway anti racism shower want him to resign now.

It's a bit damning that Grealish has yet to publicly deny saying it, or - if he did say it - 'clarify' his remarks and claim that he meant something totally different to what he said.

Let his voters decide at the next election if they agree or disagree with him. The Twitterati don't decide these things.

    swastikas

    SWASTIKAS EVERYWHERE

    ~~

What'll happen now is they'll be placed in areas where no one turns up to this kind of thing to object, like cities. Can't object if your commute is an hour and a half and you collapse soon as you get in the door! :pac:

Absolutely, even on rte news they said the vast majority of people in attendance were against the direct provision centre opening.
These will be the people voting in his constituency next election, not seosamh ni hulahoopa on twitter with his outraged followers!

is a community that does not want a direct provision centre in it de facto racist?

  • Registered Users Posts: 43,028 ✭✭✭✭SEPT 23 1989

Locals are trying to protect their communities

Local politicians will heavily pay the price for towing the party line which they don’t even believe in themselves

    Must be very frustrating

There's 'protecting your community'... and then there's spouting the kind of racist shite that Noel Grealish has yet to deny spouting.

What do you mean? I'm actually seeing a lot of rejections there? Are you saying that these people are being refused status but are not being escorted out?

Ah come on, surely you know? The deportation stats are less than 5%.

Have you not heard of the magic words 'Leave to remain'...an Irish solution to an Irish problem that that Irish Govt refuse to deal with

"It's ignorance and lack of education which leads to people pushing back against direct asylum provision."

/ government sets up direct provision centres in communities without telling them or educating them.

For that reason alone there's a fully legitimate basis to reject them outright.
