Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Soil for garden

    Please excuse my ignorance, this is a totally basic question I'm sure. Getting garden done at moment and builder is putting in raised beds for us. Want to plant a variety of things there (lavender, various bulbs, maybe a hydrangea, Japanese acer tree). He is getting soil, I just said to him to get "good quality" stuff!! I think he said it will be sieved and will have compost in it. Is there anything else I should be asking him for? Should I get some peat moss or something to throw in on top of it?

    Drainage is important for plants and from the ones you have listed lavender in particular. It likes well drained/stony soil with low levels of nutrient rich compost which is the opposite of what you have asked the builder to put in to the raised beds. It might still grow but I would expect the plants not to last very long. If you have already decided what and where you are going to plant different things you could research what soil they like and fill the raised beds in those locations with a mixture suiting what you are going to plant there.

    OP what your builder is referring to is probably "Screened Topsoil". Its shaken through a massive screen (sieve) often along with mushroom compost (because its cheap), so there is a possibility the soil will be a little alkaline and if there is a lot of mushroom compost in it then it will loose volume over time so make sure the raised beds are well filled.
