I've lost touch with iPhones as I'm not using them.

My wife loves her iPhone 5 but shortly needs a new one.

She's not fussy about specs and all she is fussy about is small screen as possible similar to her 5 size.

What phone should I buy her that will have smallest screen and be future proof for at least a few years as she doesn't like changing phones until Apple stops the software updates

I suppose the iPhone 8 would best fit the bill as regards similar screen size to the 5, and a bit of OS future-proofing. If you didn’t want to fork out a load of money, the iPhone 7 can still be got for around €300 and is eligible for iOS 13 when it comes out later this year.
