he has signed up to a really long contract with Skinnyos - will just be sky train with Bernal winning instead of Froome for years / longer - what's the plus side there?

Do the other teams not have access to the special rounder wheels also?

There's nothing wrong with winning on a time trial and holding that lead whatsoever

Absolutely nothing wrong with it, it's just boring as hell for the spectators

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,632 ✭✭✭the.red.baron

no matter what kind of train you have you have competitors can just ride your wheel

Froome still had to do the hard hard yards when it mattered

He'll have to be able to obliterate the opposition in time trials to be able to take advantage of an Ineos train.

And with the train that Jumbo Visma are steadily assembling for Dumoulin, he's gonna have to attack to win in future editions.

he (Bernal) is obviously the best climber in the world already and while he doesn't have the physique to be top ITT but he will improve to be decent enough not to lose shedloads.

he's only 22 also so not even at full strength yet.

    vs TD at 28.

If there are no other strong riders willing to put in a shift and take a chance and happy to just be top 10, that's whats boring

Clearly over the last few years that has been the case

    just haven't had the legs

Well this is interesting. There was no official timer at the top of that climb so technically they are not allowed to use that as a final timer!

This could get real interesting. Would not be surprised to see this stage scrubbed.

Take the time from the intermediate sprint at Bessans before the climb to Iseran ????

  • Registered Users Posts: 966 ✭✭✭equivariant

I'm not convinced that there was really 2 min between bernal and alaphillipe at the top. Those times on screen can often be nonsense so it will be interesting to see the times that they award

Its fitting that neural takes the lead on a climb like that, allaphillipe winning on descents only sticks in the craw

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,928 ✭✭✭letape

Time gaps lower than had ben expected:
There will be no stage winner's time bonus for Bernal, but it seems the GC gaps will be tighter than the on-screen graphics atop the Iseran suggested. Eurosport's hypothesis is that Alaphilippe will be 25 seconds behind, with Thomas at 1:06. We still await official confirmation.

descending is more exciting to watch that ascending

i mean it's great to watch the suffering on the ascending, but the way he went down yesterday was brilliant

In the wet it's hard to watch

some said he had disc brakes vs rim yesterday

Surely to be as fair as possible then a medium should be reached. To award full time to Bernal over JA is not fair. The stage did not run its course, so any times gained/lost cannot be truly gauged for the stage.

No stage winner for today, which is fair enough I guess.

Just announced JA lost 2min 7 secs to Bernal

  • Registered Users Posts: 31,083 ✭✭✭✭Lumen

??? Its pretty clear that he would have taken back a lot of time on the descent - he is a much faster descender and he had just started the descent when it was called

That wasn't what I was seeing with the on-screen graphics, I was surprised that JA wasn't making up more time, but I can't check until Eurosport have put it up on demand...

Are there not clear rules that dictate what happens in such an event?

Or do they just make it up as they go along

I don't see any way of constructing that rule so that it can be applied objectively. Are you saying that all time differences between last stage at the top of the climb today should be halved? It seems like a rule made up for one particular case.

It's completely normal to take a snapshot of time differences when a stage is stopped, e.g. when they have to stop at a TGV crossing, and apply them when the race is restarted. In today's case the race restarts tomorrow.

Bernal was virtual yellow jersey at the top of the climb, and when the race was stopped.

For me, nothing will ever beat that moment of Froome running up Ventoux. I still can't believe he decided to run :pac:

Didn't he attack to win yesterday and today??!! Deserving winner if he wins it.

hope SK gets nothing as he's done (and not even tried) nothing.

Right. He TT'd well, hung in there for two weeks and then attacked in the high mountains, with a weakening team throughout the race.

I was hoping JA would hang on but I can't begrudge Bernal the yellow jersey.

I mean that landslide shown was not actually remotely dangerous. This is France, not Bolivia, so the roads are actually not situated in precarious situations in 2019.

and the road was fine on the descent which would have been the dangerous part.

nobody is going to get seriously hurt in any way slogging uphill through a bit of slush

would have been fun to see the race continue - great spectacle - would have been epic no?

there might have been a bit of bother on the uphill but yeah, so what.

Wiggins made it through no bother on his moped to the original finish line at Tignes.

If he could get through on a moped then so could the bikes.

    Egan Bernal (Col/Ineos)
    Julian Alaphilippe (Fra/ Deceuninck-Quick Step) +45secs
    Geraint Thomas (GB/Ineos) +1mins 03secs
    Steven Kruijswijk (Ned/Jumbo-Visma) +1mins 15secs
    Emanuel Buchmann (Ger/Bora-Hansgrohe) +1mins 42secs

well Bernal wins the tour, that much is certain.

Bernal was 1:30 down on JA b4 the stage, so they gave him a 2:15 lead at the summit

There's a half meter depth of wet clay across the road. Of course they had to stop the race

it was on a flat bit.

even if it hadn't been cleared before they got there, get the shoes off , carry the bike through it in about 15 seconds.

    would have been brilliant tv

    an opportunity missed - seriously.

What's the story with Uran's time for the top of the Iseran(from the letour website), he was surely with the Nibali group when the stage was neutralised

    From BBC :

    17:24
    Bernal has too much gas
Egan Bernal flew up that final climb at just over 14mph, while Julian Alaphilippe who was dropped a few kilometres from the summit managed around 12.6mph.
