Will be in Vegas for a few days in May next year with work and thinking of extending my trip by a week. One option is driving or flying to California but does anyone else have any thoughts on where I could go? Happy to drive a few hours a day if need be.

Vegas is in middle of nowhere so driving will take time. Its 5 hours to closest big city in LA, 6 hours to San Diego and 9 hours drive to San Francisco. Obviously all would be far quicker and cheaper achieved by flying. I would recommend flying to those cities as there isn't a lot to see on those trips by car.

You could head east to northern Arizona or Utah but you really will have to drive there.

I mean it depends what you want to see. If its sun, sea, bars then San Diego. Sun, sea, themeparks, movie studios tours and Hollywood landmarks then LA. If its quaintness, laidbackness and history then San Francisco. If you are looking for spectacular desert scenery then Arizona/Utah (base in Moab)

    Grand Canyon
    Hoover Dam
    Joshua Tree National Park
    Monument Valley
    Horseshoe bend
    Antelope Canyon
    Zion National Park
Los Angeles (areas around like Santa Monica, Santa Barbara, Malibu)

Many many places. Depends what you are interested to see. Nature, cities?

Thanks folks, say I'd be doing California on a separate trip with the other half. Sites like the hoover dam appeal for sure.

Maybe an itinerary like grand canyon, hoover dam, monument valley, Moab and finish up in salt lake city or Denver could be good based on the above?

    Add Death Valley or Yosemite?

    The Hoover Dam
    Death Valley
    Zion National Park
Don't miss Luxor Hotel & Casino if you have good budget.

If you want to avoid California & leave for another trip, go to Zion national park 2 1/2 hours drive from Vegas. Very busy park but still worth seeing. Bryce Canyon another park, is an hour away from Zion. Then there's a place called Kanab in southern Utah, about 45-60 mins from Zion. It's a gateway to smaller lesser known parks that are even more amazing than the national parks. Search for White Pocket or Buckskin Gulch. White Pocket in particular is stunning, still off the radar unlike Antelope Canyon or Horseshoe Bend. From Kanab you could then go to Page, it's just a drive through unless you really want to spend time in Antelope or the more hidden slot canyons there (I've done most of them at some point but none now as they're too busy). From Page you can do Monument Valley, up to Moab which is a cool town and has Arches & Canyonlands on the doorstep. From Moab it's a 4 hour drive to Salt Lake City where you can fly out of! You could do all that in a week. All that would get Vegas out of your system (somewhere I'll only drive by nowadays).

Avoid desert in Summer. Too hot. Both LA & San Diego have many entertainments. I fly when I can. Depends on your budget.

The drive from Vegas to LA isn't actually too bad, i've done it a bunch of times.

Have you thought about Orlando? get to some of the theme parks?

Is it all sand straight roards and nothing to see really on the way? I would get board fast and surely a flight be alot easier.

Flight time is about 90 mins so you're not going to save much time flying that short a distance when factoring in getting to the airport, checking in, security, waiting to board, taxiing, waiting to get off the plane etc.

OP I've done the Vegas-Grand Canyon trip and the GC was the highlight. Loved it. Vegas was too smokey and fake for me.

As FatherTed says, you won't really save any time by flying.

It's a handy drive. It's 6 hours drive for me to go to Vegas, vs a 2 hour drive to LA and then fly. The drive is just easier.

Also, it's not all sand the whole way. There a few things to see, the coolest being the massive solar farm just inside the CA border.

There's also an AWESOME little diner when you hit Barstow.
Peggy Sue's, it really is cool to stop there for breakfast or lunch when you're on the way either direction.

And just after that is Primm with the Buffalo Bills sign for a pic. One of the funniest sights around here is the number of motorists pulled over for speeding by Nevada cops in the first few miles into NV. Fish in a barrel.

I've done most of the national parks around Vegas and my favourite is Zion - Grand Canyon is spectacular but Zion allows you to see everything up close. A reasonable loop to do would be Vegas -> Hoover -> Grand Canyon -> Zion -> Vegas. May is a good time to visit too, weather should be good and should not be too crowded.

The drive from Vegas to LA is boring if you stick to interstates - I much prefer getting off just after crossing the state line and going through Mojave and around Joshua Tree. Probably adds some time on but is worth it.

    +1

Done the same and Joshua Tree National Park is really worth to visit.
