    Hi Guys,

I’m might be dipping back into the market for a new Soundbar to replace my Yamaha YAS 306 which I bought from yourselves about 4 or 5 years ago. Although the Yamaha is a great bar I'm looking to upgrade to a more “cinematic” Soundbar. By that I mean something that provides a more spaciousness and surround feel to the sound for movies. I’ve listened to the Sonos Beam in the shops and although up close it sounds fantastic I'm not sure it would deliver that same clarity and all round spaciousness from a distance of about 10 feet which is the distance from my couch to my TV.

Of the 3 options below, which would you recommend for getting a more surround sound feel for movies and also, would these units be much of an upgrade from the Yamaha YAS 306?

    Thanks guys.

    Hi Hendrickp.

Thanks for coming back to us again.

The Sony F9000 in my opinion would be the better sounding of the ones listed. With the ability to decode and output Dolby Atmos and DTS:X will give a more fuller cinema experience. (THESE ARE IN MEGA SHORT SUPPLY)!

The Sonos beam, is also a fantastic product but lacks the bass without adding the subwoofer. Also without the rears there is no real surround sound effect. To get the 5.1 setup you are going up over the £1000 mark.

The BAR40 is also not bad at all but to compare to the other two you would need to be looking at the BAR400 which is priced at £449
    https://www.richersounds.ie/p-203613-yamaha-musiccast-bar-400-soundbar.aspx

Sony also have the ZF9 which is fantastic, coming in still cheaper than the Sonos Playbar coming in at £599

    Let me know your thoughts.

    Hi Hendrickp.

I've had a check over our stock listing and at the minute there are no soundbars available to us the come included with wireless rears.
They can be purchased separately for some of the soundbars but there is nothing even close to the price of the LG you linked above.

    Hi,

Would you consider the sound quality of the Sony HTXF9000 a big step up from the Yamaha YAS306, especially in terms of watching movies. Its an expensive piece of kit and I don't want to change soundbar for just a minor upgrade in sound quality.

    Hi Hendrickp.

The Yas306 was a good soundbar but in my opinion the Sony XF9000 is much better.
With the ability to play Atmos in itself will product a fuller more indepth sound for Atmos movies.

For standard movies it will also sound fantastic and this can altered with the 5 tailored sound modes.
The wireless subwoofer of the XF9000 will also add in low bass tones than the YS306's built in sub.

The Sony can also connect via HDMI ARC again giving better audio quality.

I hope this help a little.

Thanks so much for the advice. I'm going to go and have a listen to this soundbar the weekend so I will be in touch afterwards.

Just as a follow on from this, you don't happen to have any open box or clearance deals going on at the moment that i might be interested in.

    Hey Hendrckp.

Unfortunately I would not have an open box one of the F9000 at present.

Let me know what you think once you get a listen to it :)

    Hi,

Just one last question, I'm also looking at the Samsung HW-N650 which is for sale on your UK site and I am wondering if you would have an opinion on how this bar would stake up against the Sony XF9000 in terms of sound quality. I know the Samsung doesn't have Atmos but from what I can gather from the info on the site it is a 5.1 soundbar and has Samsung's acoustic beam technology built in for a similar surround effect. Any info is greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

    Hi Hendrickp,

Kenny is off today so I hope you don;t mind me replying on his behalf.

The Samsung is a great soundbar but it wouldn't be as good as the Sony (it's also just been discontinued so is no longer available). As the Sony has Atmos it is much better at virtual surround and fills the room well.

Let me know what you think.

    Kind regards

    David

    Hi Guys,

i went to have a listen to the Sony XF9000 and although the surround sound effects were very good from a single 2.1 soundbar i found that the dialogue was quite low in certain parts of the video i saw. I've since read some reviews online were some people have complained about the same thing. Is this something you would have had issues with on this model? Also i realised over the weekend that my 4K player does not have atmos built in so i'm not sure i would get the full use of it right now. I would assume that the only way around the issue of the dialogue being low would be to buy a 3.1 bar with a dedicated centre channel (whats the best 3.1 soundbar you have under €450) or go down another route by buying an AV receiver that can play 5.1 but only use the the 3.1 setup as getting speakers to the back of my room is a real hassle. something like this package on your site:

    https://www.richersounds.ie/p-13474-denon-avrx550-elac-cinema-5-1-speaker-pack-av-receiver-and-5-1-speaker-package.aspx

thanks in advance for any advice.

    Hi Hendrickp.

I don't have any other soundbars I could offer around the 450 Euro mark other than what has already been listed above.

Below the F9000 would be the LG SJ8 which is marketed as a 4.1 channel soundbar listed at 319 Euro
    https://euro.richersounds.ie/p-202563-lg-sj8-soundbar.aspx

Next above the Bar 40 would be the Yamaha YSP2700 but its priced 599 Euro
    https://euro.richersounds.ie/p-202216-yamaha-ysp2700-black-soundbar.aspx

In my opinion you will always get a better sound from an equivalent 5.1 home cinema setup over a soundbar.

The AVRX550 and the Elac system would be a very nice little setup and again in my opinion will sound better than an equivalent priced soundbar.
You could set it up as a 3.1 but as you know you would lose the rear section of the audio track when ran in 3.1
You would need to run a 3.1 setup in multi channel stereo but this would not product a surround sound feel.

    Hi Kenny,

Thanks again for the feedback. It's much appreciated.

I’m looking into some sort of a solution to running speaker wires from one side of my room to the other so if I can get that sorted I might end up buying the AV Receiver option above. If not I’ll be back to the Soundbar option and I’ll probably end up going for a Soundbar that has the option to expand at a later date to have 2 wireless rear speakers like the Sonos Beam or one of the Samsung’s as the Sony doesn’t have that option.

I’ll be in touch over the coming week.

    No Problem at all Hendrickp.

The Yamaha bar range can also use the Yamaha Musiccast 20 or 50 as wireless rears and possibly another you should look at if a home cinema setup is out of the question.

    Hi Kenny,

Just out of curiosity, what would a Yamaha Bar 40 and 2 Musicast 20's cost?

  • Company Representative Posts: 17,277 ✭✭✭✭Richersounds.ie: Kenny

    Hey Hendrickp.

The best I could offer on the Bar 40 and 2 Musiccast 20's would be 667 Euro.
Retail in Euro would be 717 Euro.

    Hi Guys,

Sorry for bringing up an old thread but I'm still in the market for a new soundbar. After some of your advice above I was leaning towards the Sonos Beam as I really liked the sound of this one but I have since found out that the Beam does not decode DTS properly. It downmixes this audio to plain 2.0 stereo and considering I have a large collection of DVD's and Blu Rays in DTS Master Audio and I planned to buy 2 Play 1s at a later date to get full 5.1 surround, it doesn't seem like the option I'm looking for.

I've since noticed that you have the new LG 3.1 Soundbar in stock (link below). Can you confirm how this compares to the Sonos Beam in terms of sound quality and overall use. Also, do you know of any way to get the Beam to play DTS correctly?

    Thanks

    Hi Hendrickp.

At the moment there is no DTS support on the Beam. There was talk a while ago about a firmware update but it never materialized.
So for the time being its PCM Stereo or Dolby digital.

The LG mentioned I haven't heard in the flesh but I would say it would sound just as good or better compared to the beam.
The LG has the added extra of coming with a wireless subwoofer, has the option for wireless rears (SPK8-S) can decode and play many different audio tracks.

At the 449 Euro the LG is a bargain as it also retails at £449 sterling.

    Let me know your thoughts.

Thanks for the feedback. Can I just ask one last question, I bought my Panasonic OLED TV from yourselves a few months ago and as far as I know it doesn't passthrough DTS audio, as most TV's don't. If I were to use the LG as it is intended by connecting it to the TV by HDMI and using ARC, am I right in saying that because the TV doesn't decode DTS I still wont get DTS 5.1 from the LG Soundbar either and so the only way to get DTS from the LG (and most soundbars) is to connect the blu ray player directly into the soundbar by Optical and bypass the TV altogether?
I know the LG has HDMI IN & OUT but its only HDMI 1.4 and therefore wont send a full 4K HDR signal to the Panasonic.

    Regards

    Hey Hendrickp.

    Unfortunately that sounds about correct.

You will only get the DTS if you connect directly to the bar.

The Yamaha we have previously mention the Bar 400 will do DTS and has HDMI with HCDP2.2 and compatible with HDR10, Dolby Vision and HLG.
A bit more expensive at 529 Euro.

I thought that was the case. I'm starting to think that the only clean way to get around this issue is to go down the route of a separate Amp and Speaker combo and try and find a way to get the rear speakers around my living room or just forget about the rears altogether.

Thanks again for your help. I'll be back on to you when I decide which option is the best.
