Strange day yesterday. Didn't think Archer bowled as well as the figures he got. Broad was excellent.

Looking at the forecast it is to be cloudy up to about tea time. Aus need to have Eng at least 6 or 7 down by then to stay in this test.

It is a good thing that England have Ben Stokes to rely on...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,001 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

That was a defensive shot of a tail ender by Root. Very poor. Not picking up the line of the ball, a fuller delivery played too off the back foot. Strange prod rather then a shot..

Do we have to spend the entire series listening to crowds sing “Same old Aussies, always cheating” when they’ve a review go against them? Getting very old.

Dream start for them, if they’d gotten that Denly lbw too it would have been unbelievable.

Looks like Archer is gonna have to do it with the bat as well if he's to save England here.

Bad wicket for Stokes, and another good catch from Warner. The sunny weather and good batting conditions aren't doing much to help England this morning, not with the Aussie quicks in the mood they're in.

    Or not :pac:

No need for Stokes to play that shot. Warner loving being in the field today.

Sadly, the Headingley wicket is much improved (from a batting perspective) since it was completely relaid in 2009. So good is it nowadays that even Jason Roy will probably get past twenty tomorrow.

    Oh dear! Cheerio Jason!

A man who seemingly has never opened for Surrey in a first class match, but is considered good enough to open for England.

34/4 and one of the batsman at the crease is Joe Denly. Not looking good.

What's happening here? Is it a good dry day there or cloudy / humid? Heard that Denly was looking shaky too, maybe he'll last like Warner yesterday?

    Madness really.

Unless he does something impressive next innings, bin him or middle order.

Root will probably score 200 next innings ...but his decline over last few years has been a serious concern.

Good batting conditions, but the ball is still doing a little bit.

Roy, Burns & Stoke all got themsleves out by poor shot selections.

    100%.

For all the good bowling by the Aussies and it has been very good...for the most part the English batsmen after the fall of the first two wickets have been very negative. I know with the fall of wickets its necessary to consolidate but to see Denly with just 11 off 46 and Bairstow yet to get off the mark after a couple of overs....not taking the fight to the Aussies it’s like the early 90’s all over again...playing far to conservatively and allowing themselves to be under the kosh..playing into the hands here of the Australians...

Yet another terrible shot in execution and selection...Australia in pole position.

when aus lost the 2 early wickets i thought 200 would be a good recovery. then at 130/2 i thought 300 might be on. what an extraordinary collapse!

flaky batting and excellent bowling to dismiss for ~180. eng big favorites now. my prediction....england will only bat once and win this at a canter

    :o

    fair play to the aussies

Usual from England. They'll somehow manage to get to Australia's score, they always have at least one good partnership with the tail

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,001 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

Jesus, I think that’s one of the best slip catches I’ve seen, England in complete disarray... lucky to score 100 at this rate. Excellent bowling though by Australia, dead eye accurate and consistent.

Batting collapses everywhere this Summer, don't remember ever seeing this many in succession, between Ireland, England and Australia.

What ails them? The ODI & T20 coming home to roost?

It's hard to know, sometimes you'd say it's poor batting, certainly today there's been some very poor shot choices, and all the talk recently has been of England's focus on ODI for the past number of years. But also there's been some amazing bowling performances this Summer, so you can't put it all down to poor batting.

What I will say is there's currently no one in the England Test team that you could really rely on to consistently put in good Test performances. Don't have to be Steve Smith level, just consistent, stubborn batting. At the same time there aren't many of that calibre in the Aussie team either. Labuschagne looks good. But the likes of Ponting, Cook, Strauss, Vaughan, Hayden, Clarke? There aren't many Aussies or Englishmen like them around at the moment.

England all out for 67, Hazlewood with a fifer.

Everybody forgot how many question marks there were in that English side and thought the feel good form of the ODI side would just roll into the Test game.

Our 38 all out at Lords was horrendous but the conditions made it incredibly difficult.

England's effort today was probably one of the worst innings I've ever seen in test cricket. Sun was out, no real excuse in not getting a score. Australia have bowled terrifically and they have a special group of fast bowlers, but that was pathetic by England.

    Ashes all but over.

Warner gone for a duck now! Maybe no one was told that it's a Test match.

Can't remember the last time England had such a poor top order.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,314 ✭✭✭BOHtox

What a bizarre game of cricket. Wonder could England successfully chase 300. Obviously not on the way they batted in the first innings, but do they have it in them?

  • Registered Users Posts: 730 ✭✭✭wicorthered

Both set of batsmen, bar Smith are absolutely hopeless. I'd be surprised if the Aussies made 180!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,172 ✭✭✭✭kmart6

Small things really at times, though Australia could have squeezed 2 on the last ball of the 14th, Khawaja ends up with the strike and plays a terrible shot to get out.

Could have Australia bowling after tea at this rate.

Smith must be sitting there scratching his head and wondering can no one put together a decent partnership between the 22 of them? Excepting the Aussie century stand in 1st innings, it's been very shaky from all to date.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,349 ✭✭✭✭y0ssar1an22

Is it the the pitch, overhead conditions, crap batting or great bowling?
Prob a combo of all 4. And just into the 6th session. 23 wicket's down! Nuts. Although there was time lost yesterday, makes it even worse

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,349 ✭✭✭✭y0ssar1an22

It's kinda funny with Smith. I would hazard a guess he wouldn't make too many peoples greatest ever 11. Prob needs to get 10k runs and maintain his average

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,001 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

If England hadnt made such a catastrophe of their first innings, even made 180/200 they would be favorites here..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,349 ✭✭✭✭y0ssar1an22

Archer after pulling his hamstring by the looks of things. If that's the case root will get rightly criticised for over bowling him

Too busy chasing blow up watermelons in the last hour and a half.

Stokes bowling brilliantly but for that no-ball Australia are five down. Frustrating,

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,001 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

Possibly a run out had that Buttler throw to Bairstow not been three feet two high.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,001 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

Another one dropped by Bairstow this time, not the easiest of chances it must be said, quick, low and far away to his right but having got there will have been disappointed not to hold it...A very audible ‘fûcking hell’ from Stokes, frustrating he’s bowled excellently..

Not a done deal yet by any means you'd think. If Eng can take those 4 wickets fairly quickly tomorrow, they'll have plenty of time anyway to work up to 300ish total. Whatever about their capacity to do it. I'd think the Aussies will be a little disappointed if they can't get that lead up closer to 400.

Gonna take quite some effort to chase the current 283, let alone any more, esp the way the innings have gone soo far. Personally with perfect weather predicted I think 2-0 Australia is nailed on at this point and the urn is retained.

The highest 4th innings successful run chase in test match history is 418. Even a lead of 300 would be in the upper tier of successful run chases. Given the way England have been batting, hard to see them chasing down 300 let alone 400.

England’s lowest Ashes innings total since 1948 apparently I’m just reading.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,333 ✭✭✭✭namloc1980

Watching it back again. That ball that Ben Stokes chased to get out was ridiculous. It was so so wide and he went after it anyway. It would've been a rubbish shot in a T20 match, let alone a test match.
