    Hi lads,

I bought an Onkyo TX-NR515 from you about 5 years ago and have it connected to a set of Bose AM15s (which are about 20 years old) and was wondering if there would be any appreciable difference in sound quality replacing the Onkyo with the Sony due to Dolby Atmos or would I also need to change the speakers (which I don't particularly want to do)?

Would a good soundbar be a better option, if so what would you recommend?

I have a Sonos Beam already in a smaller room (that's connected to an LG49SK8500 that I also got from you last year) but the main room is much bigger and I don't think the Beam will be sufficient particularly without a sub).

    Any suggestions welcome.

    Robert

    Hi RDMH,

    Thanks for the post!

The Sony would be an upgrade over the Onkyo in terms of sound quality however to get the benefit of the Atmos you would need to add a pair of Atmos speakers into the system. You can keep your existing speakers, you just need to add Atmos compatible speakers to the system.

I would recommend going with an amplifier over a soundbar as they can fill out the room more effectively, give a better sound, and can be added to or upgraded without getting rid of the whole system.

Let me know what you think!

    Kind regards

    David

    Hi David,

What additional speakers would you suggest to add to the Bose for Atmos and where do these need to be situated?

    Hi RDMH,

You could use either in ceiling speakers or Upfiring Atmos speakers which would be placed above your front left and right speakers. I would recommend something like the Elac Debut A4 at £199:

Thanks Dave, will have a think about it as these would need to be placed on a wall due to the small size of the Bose AM5 cubes.
