Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to Boards Best Movie Ever Competition!

We've rolled out the red carpet.

It's time to put on your glad rags.

    And don't forget the bling.

    Custom-Chain-with-Blue-Drip.jpg

Competition will start right here, in your local neighbourhood Forum Games, from tomorrow afternoon.

You, lovely audience and prospective voters, may mingle, chat and otherwise make yourself comfortable until the show begins.

    264.jpg

    Rules for the game

    • 16 first round matches
    • Pick one of the movies and decide which you prefer. Give a reason. Movies where no reason are given won't be counted. All valid posts will be thanked.
    • First to 6 points, with two clear points ahead goes through to the next round.
    • One vote per player per match.
    • Anyone can vote, even if you hadn't submitted your entries.

    Note on the mechanics:
    • Top 8 movies have been seeded to avoid playing off against each other in the first rounds.
    • Other 24 movies have been randomised.
    • Match order has been randomised (ie, you won't necessarily see the Seed 1 in the first match)

No no, it's going to smash it out of the park :p

Is this a Bring Your Own Snacks event, or are nibbles provided?

    There's a champagne reception, surely.

Resident alcoholic checking in. Sorry folks the champagne reception has mysteriously vanished along with the prize of a car...

The OP has been updated with the rules of the game. Are we ready????

    Match 1

    The Last of the Mohicans

    vs

    Goodfellas

Kicking this off with a vote for Goodfellas. My second fave mob movie of all time. Mohicans is a bit meh for me tbh. Takes too long to get going and I didn't really feel like it needed a rewatch.

    Goodfellas

It's not the Godfather but it's still a masterclass in movie making.

    Vote for Goodfellas.

Some of the most terrifying performances from a cast of phenomenal actors. It was a masterpiece of the intricacies of criminal relationships.

    Funny how?

    Ooh two great films !
Going with Goodfellas though , not one bad performance in it .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,468 ✭✭✭Ectoplasm

Goodfellas. Think the acting in it is outstanding and while not a mad lover of mob movies thought this was excellent.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,941 ✭✭✭osh

Goodfellas for me. Definitely one of my top movies, especially in the gangster/mafia vein. Violent and brutal and funny moments as well. Great cast too especially Liotta, de Niro and Pesci.

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 16,287 Mod ✭✭✭✭quickbeam

BTW, if I thank your post, it's deemed a point for the film. Will update OP.

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 16,287 Mod ✭✭✭✭quickbeam

Well, that was emphatic. 6-0 to Goodfellas. Straight in to the last 16!

  • Moderators, Social & Fun Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 53,174 Mod ✭✭✭✭Necro

Well that was a slaughter... not unlike Mohicans :pac:

    And rightly so

How were the top 32 selected QB? Your preference, either by favourite movies or interesting matchups, or random?

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 16,287 Mod ✭✭✭✭quickbeam

    Match 2

The randomiser deemed two cartoons should slug it out!

    Up

    vs

    Inside Out

Ah bollocks. Two great animated movies.

Gotta go for Up here though for that tear-inducing intro alone.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,468 ✭✭✭Ectoplasm

Up. I love how it combines sentiment and humour. Brave decision to start it the way it did too.

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 16,287 Mod ✭✭✭✭quickbeam

Firstly by most votes received. Where there was a tie, it was completely randomised as to which competed.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,941 ✭✭✭osh

Have to go for Up for this one. Really enjoyed it when I watched it. The relationship between the two characters is great. Inside Out was decent but not on the same level imo.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,890 ✭✭✭tusk

Yeah. The intro and that twist within the first 5 minutes means up gets my vote too.

    Very tough one though

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,082 ✭✭✭duffman13

Up is a different level, the opening montage is outrageously good and the film strikes a nice chord throughout. Thumbs Up from me

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,485 ✭✭✭✭Banjo

Up. It's a proper film, where inside out is a kids film (albeit with a tragic metaphor for trying to understand a tweenager in emotional shutdown)

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 16,287 Mod ✭✭✭✭quickbeam

And Up has it in another walk-over, 6-0 and progresses to the next round!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,994 ✭✭✭sullivlo

    Up.

It gave me my favourite dog related expression: he wears the cone of shame.

    Match 3

Next up, again, a kind of appropriate pairing, though they were definitely randomised:

    The Green Mile

    vs

    Prisoners

    John_Coffey.jpg

    prisoners1_2663853b.jpg

Will we have our third walk-over in a row??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,994 ✭✭✭sullivlo

Green mile. Really encapsulated the life on death row.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,890 ✭✭✭tusk

    Green mile.

    Intense and unforgettable.

    Wasn't too pushed with prisoners.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,468 ✭✭✭Ectoplasm

The Green Mile. One of the best performances I've ever seen in a movie.

  • Moderators, Social & Fun Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 53,174 Mod ✭✭✭✭Necro

    ..........I've never seen Prisoners.

    Green Mile is awesome.

So Green Mile gets my vote :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,941 ✭✭✭osh

Well I've never seen prisoners actually. Should votes only count if you've seen both movies?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,485 ✭✭✭✭Banjo

    Oooh good question.
(It would be wrong to vote for a movie I haven't seen just because the Green Mile is crap)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,366 ✭✭✭✭Mam of 4

The Green Mile , by a thousand miles .

I think they can. You didn't have to have eaten both chocolate bars to vote on them in the original AH competition that inspired this.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 71,802 ✭✭✭✭Ted_YNWA

Green mile is only one I've seen too

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,082 ✭✭✭duffman13

The green mile, I liked prisoners, worth a watch and a good movie but again, it's not in the same league as the green mile.

Actually surprised prisoners even came up in this. Wouldn't have thought it was in anyones favorites

    Snap Evade.

Ohhh tough choice. Has to go LOTR though. Most likely to watch again.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,890 ✭✭✭tusk

    Two towers for me.

That battle was just something else.

Back to the Future is great. But not great enough
