Massive lightning strike and the loudest thunder I've heard in Cork just there. Very therapeutic listening to the rain while doing some work on the laptop.

28 mm's @ Sherkin Islands and Roaches Point so far.

Models seem to be fairly accurate so far, for the S anyway.

Things have really picked up here near Kinsale. We have had several strikes in just the last few minutes, with thunder too. Must be moving inland,

Kicking off in cork city now

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,303 ✭✭✭pad199207

Judging by the reports here and observing the detectors, clearly not picking up all the flashes .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,802 ✭✭✭✭Itssoeasy

Very bright flash and a loud rumble of thunder and then a kind of secondary one(might not be the correct term for it) and this might be a stupid question but is that thing of counting the seconds between a flash of lightning and thunder based on anything solid or is it just a rough guess of how far away it was ? I've always wondered that and given we have thunder and lightning right now it's as good a time as any to ask.

Another one. The power goes off for a brief second.

    I think it's a rule of thumb

Just the difference between the speed of light and the speed of sound.

Electricity is flickering here in Kildare

    That hasn’t happened since Ophelia

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,276 ✭✭✭sdanseo

Just the difference between the speed of light and the speed of sound.

    Gave me a giggle.

To expand, sound travels at around 343m/s (and light at 300,000,000m/s) so for every 3 seconds between the flash and the thunder, the cloud that caused it is around 1km away. In 3 dimensions mind - could be vertical.

Got a light flicker here in South Dublin too, must've been a strike that hit a major part of the grid for it to be so noticeable around the country.
