Does anyone have first hand experience or can point me to a webpage that explains how vat is calculated on a bike when applicable. Thinking of bring in a 2018 bike with only 2K miles on it from the UK. While I can calculate the VRT on line I cannot see anywhere that tells me how they work out the vat. I am basing vat being due on below which is from Revenue site. Thanks

    VAT and Customs Duty
    Value Added Tax (VAT)

VAT may also be due on the acquisition of a new means of transport from another Member State. If you are not entitled to a VAT deduction, this VAT is normally payable with the VRT.

When it enters the State, a vehicle is a new means of transport for VAT purposes if either of the below applies:

it is less than six months after its first registration
it has travelled 6,000 kilometres or less

    For example:

Vehicle is five months old with 8,000km - chargeable to VAT.
Vehicle is seven months old with 5,000km - chargeable to VAT.
Vehicle is seven months old with 8,000km - not chargeable to VAT.

Just take the long way home and ride it till you get to 6k km. You have 30 days from import to register it so book your appointment for 3 weeks after import and enjoy your new toy while saving yourself money.

Do you really want to pay VAT on it? If it has less than 6k kms on it when you bring it to the VRT office you will have to pay VAT. If it is an expensive bike, it will be a LOT of VAT. VAT is payable at 23% on the sum you paid for the bike and you'll need to provide a bill of sale with the purchase price on it as proof. How much is the bike?

I'm in the process of buying a bike from the UK with 10,000 miles for £9000 (approx €9600). Am i reading you right in that no VAT is applicable?

Correct: no VAT on vehicles over 6k kms and over 6 months of age.

That assuming of course, the original 'new VAT' was paid in the UK in the first place...........

I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

I did this last year, and VAT was liable on mine.

    Sums are straightforward:

Invoice price + shipping + VRT: 23% on top.

What if you are importing from the US? Still no VAT? Just VRT?

No, it's all of the above PLUS Customs Duty, Customs Clearance Fees etc. VAT is applied on top of all of that iirc.

Be aware that whatever you're importing may need to have an EU Certificate of Compliance to allow it to be registered here. (e.g. EU3 or EU4. Depends on the age of whatever it is you're bringing in)
